Courage
She stared long into the mirror.
Brushed the hair off her face.
Clenches her teeth and mutters.
Tries to believe her words.
Ignores the taunting voices.
He drives down the road.
Beer bottle clutched in his hand.
Faster and faster he goes.
Swerving over the line.
Narrowly missing a car.
She covers the bruises.
Wipes away the tears.
Closes her eyes and sighs.
Takes one last look in the mirror.
Moves away slowly, reluctantly.
He pulls into the drive.
Staggers out of his car.
Stumbles over a tricycle.
Curses, slamming his fist into the ground.
Throws open the front door.
She looks up and trembles.
The liquor on his breath strong.
A knife hidden behind her back.
It will end, she swears.
She slowly stands.
He looms menacingly over her.
Breathing in her lilac perfume.
The yelling beings, her tears fall.
Knife blade glints in the moonlight.
He groans once and is gone.
She hides his body.
Her mind numb, heart racing.
Washes the blood off.
Kisses her daughter's cheek.
Climbs into her bed and sleeps.
His body was never found.
Her bruises cleared her steps livelier.
Never again would he come home late.
With liquor on his breath.
Nor would he hit her again.
