The Meeting of Ways
Author's note: I use this universe/dimension scheme for The Succubus Academy and for several of my more freeform commissions. Call this the "great backstory" of my current worldset. I'll be adding some of the commissions whose purchasers give me permission to post them, here.
For most of two thousand years, the dimensions had each perceived their universe as the sum and whole of Creation. As they began to grow out of that belief, great thinkers theorized that each universe lay alongside another, like houses next door to each other. Greater thinkers, derided as fantasy and science fiction authors, theorized many numerous dimensions overlaying one another, in a great, chaotic tapestry. No serious-thinking person of that time period believed them.
If, however, you lay each dimension carefully atop the other, with a common center “axle” running through the middle of them, you have arrived at the true image of the dimensions. And at this very center of all Creation resides, not God, but the closest facsimile thereof.
The Meeting of Ways. Bar, inn, tavern, mall, strip club, courtesans' house, it was all of that. Any number of patrons from every dimension ever imagined by a drunken author, each leaving their disputes at the door to have whatever passes for a pint in their home dimensions.
In a sense of irony, these patrons chose for themselves a term, 'demon' from a late-1990's Earth Normal author's term for 'dimension traveler.' Every evening, these demons would ply the bartender for drinks, giving the bar the meaning of its name. Only one dimension never visited the Meeting of Ways, for it was in that dimension that the Meeting of Ways truly resided, though the natives knew it not.
Earth Normal, the dimension was called after much debate. Every dimension had a Sol. Most of them had a third planet that was the same mass as Terra. Earth Normal had more factors in common with every other dimension than any other dimension yet discovered. It also had as few distinguishing characteristics: no magic, no fantastic creatures, only one race of sentient bipeds, only one moon.
At the Meeting of Ways, on the continent of North America, Earth Normal, any one from any reality could meet with another.
If there is a Heaven in any world, that is it.
