without further ado, chapter 1

It was raining when Kateri walked up the muddy path into the center of the Navarati village. Her two generals flanked her as she passed through the line of her soldiers at the village gates.

Her troops had been there barely a week, and already had managed to conquer the Navarati. Rain beat down on the canvases of the hundreds of tents that made up the village. Their chieftain had asked Kateri to meet with him, most likely to ask what would be done to he and his people, and to beg for their lives and livelihoods.

She would grant them that, of course. She didn’t have the manpower to closely govern the tribe, nor did she want them dead, nor did she have room for several thousand more slaves to be processed. All she needed was their allegiance and passage through their land.

The Navarati’s territories were vast, and Kateri needed to move her troops across the plains. Without this direct route, it would be

impossible to win the war. Their supply routes were easily cut off in the mountains, and the roads were thick with thieves. All she needed was the land, but the Navarati didn’t know that, and she could easily get something out of them first. The only question was “What?”

The Navarati were gray. Their clothes, their hair, their skin, everything about them was gray. It seemed liked they had been dragged up out of the mud.

Their women wore thick, heavy dresses covering them from the ground up to tightly bound collars guarding even the barest hint of neck from sight. The sleeves were loose and puffy down to the elbow, where flashes of colored ribbon bound the sleeves close to their arm.

The men wore rough tunics and billowy, bunched, loose fitting pants. In the darkness, the ribbons on the women’s sleeves were the only noticeable color. The rest of them, their faces, their clothes blended into the night, but Kateri could still see the whites of their eyes wide in fear as they watched their new ruler walk through the center of the town.

The chief’s tent was the only tent not gray or black. It was a pale yellow with red embroidery on the front flap and sides. The flap was pulled back and Kateri could see the fire-lit inside. She strode in straight-backed with her head held high, casting a haughty gaze at the tribe chief, Mabetu.

Mabetu looked up with angry eyes as Kateri entered. His wives knelt quietly behind him on embroidered mats, their heads downcast in the presence of their conqueror.

Kateri noted their elaborate hairstyles, which seemed to be favored by the Navarati. Kateri took the chair offered to her as Mabetu stood in respect. He returned to his seat and they stared at each other for a moment, Kateri in amusement and Mabetu in anger.

Finally he shook his head in defeat and snapped his fingers. A slim girl emerged from a flap in the side of the tent. Kateri watched the way she walked, the way her hips swayed gently, the way her face was carefully blank, as she brought a bowl of fruit towards the table.

The girl was small, but she had to be at least sixteen, judging by her face.

She knelt on the floor by Kateri’s chair and held up the bowl of fruits. Kateri picked out one, then the girl moved to Mabetu’s side and offered the bowl to him. He dismissed her with a wave of his hand and turned to Kateri.

“My daughter, Averi,” he said, explaining who the girl was. Kateri nodded in acknowledgement, but her eyes were fixed on Averi’s slim form as she retreated back through the flap. Kateri smiled wickedly, she had found what she wanted.
