“Them,” the man at the door said, pointing to the perfect set of little twins on the cold dirt floor of the hut.
“No, no, sir, you don’t want them. They aren’t for sale; none of my children are for sale. The silver is though, sir, please, it’s all I have to sell now. Please, sir,” their mother begged.
“They’ll sell for a fair price, more than the silver,” the man said shrewdly. “Many a lord or lady would want such pretty babes.”
“They’re only children!” she exclaimed, clearly outraged.
“Nevertheless, they’d sell for a good price.”
“Goodbye, sir, if you don’t want to buy the silver, then goodbye. My children aren’t for sale.”
“Oh don’t be hasty now. I’ll take the bloody silver. But don’t forget my offer. I’ll take those two off your hands, if you ever change your mind.”
“Out of the question. Here, now go.” And with that she shut the door and turned back to the weak fire for warmth.

A week had passed, and the taxes had increased again. They said the war wasn’t going well; they said by the fall we would all be under enemy rule. At least, that’s what they said.
Marita never really took stock in what they had to say, mostly because you never knew who “they” actually were. But it was undeniable that times were getting harder. Royal troops marched through the little town, demanding food and water, and women, where they could find them.
It seemed that the war would drag on forever, draining the life out of the people. Their money poured into the capital, paying for troops to keep them safe. But there were whispers, word that the outlying towns had already been invaded.
Marita paced in her little hut around a path well worn by her worrying feet. Her two youngest children, Adrian and Aurora, sat by the fire and played with worn dolls and other half-broken toys.
Everything that Marita could sell she had sold already, but she still didn’t have enough money to pay the tax collector. She looked at her children, her two perfect little blonde angels.
Their father had been called away to war, and neither he nor his troop had returned. She wondered about the merchant from the other night, and his advice that they would sell for a small fortune. Marita loved her little twins, but she didn’t want to be imprisoned or executed.
She wanted so badly to live. She looked out the dirty window as another troop marched by and wondered if maybe, just maybe, her children would have better lives as slaves in another country.
