Academy 101: Year 1
Chapter One: Welcome
Dark green hair swirled around the heads of two fourteen-year-old girls as the bitter wind from outside blew in through the hole in the roof. Two pairs of red eyes were fixed on the steel stage below them. Golden flowers rimmed the railings in front of them; the flowers cascaded along the railings until they gracefully arched over the golden curtains of the stage below. Mirrored walls reflected the single crystal chandelier’s light until the whole auditorium was flooded with the golden light. Cherry wood seats with silver pillows were lined in rows around the stage, the arrangement creating a half circle. Occupying the seats was a variety of parents with their sons and daughters. There were noticeably least girls than boys. The twins didn’t let this bother them, just like they hadn’t let the fact that most if not all of the boys had been staring at them. With glowing medium brown skin and curvaceous bodies the girls knew full well why the boys stared. Almond shaped eyes along with heart shaped mouths didn’t help either.
The sound of heavy boots striding across the stage easily directed the girls’ gaze at the man that had suddenly approached the microphone in the middle of the stage. Silver pants tucked into black iron boots, along with a plain white blouse and gray cloak adorned what the twins guessed was their soon to be principal. The girls would have thought him extremely boring if his dazzlingly orange hair and forest green eyes hadn’t brighten up his peasant outfit enormously. His baritone voice that resonated throughout the hollow auditorium wasn’t bad either.
“Welcome to Academy 101. I’m Coulis Varane, your principal. You will be the Academy’s freshmen students for the year of 3125. You have been allowed to enter this school either because of how you are, whom you know, or because of your extreme talent in combat. Some have gotten in because of all three.” Here he paused and looked at the twins. “Now that you have gotten in the school you all will be put into ranks. ‘5’ is the highest rank that starting freshmen can hold, as the year progresses so will your rank…hopefully anyway. Everything you receive will be earned, ranks are no different.” He paused again to look at someone that was sitting a few feet down. “Now I present the main teachers for the freshmen.”
Three men walked on stage. The tallest one walked out carrying a gigantic bastard sword on his back. His long purple hair was braided into a single braid and his green eyes glinted in the golden light. He was covered from the neck on down with a red cloak, which made it impossible to tell what he was wearing underneath. The second male was dressed in brown light armor and had a quiver full of arrows on his back along with a bow in his hand. His light blonde hair and gray eyes spoke volumes of his intelligence. The third, and last, man walked with out making a sound. His black robes swayed silently as he darn near glided across the stage. His red hair and coal black eyes sent chills down the girls’ backs.
“Mr. Maye is our sword play instructor, while Fenlick and Renien teach archery and the dark arts. They are to be obeyed at all cost.” Coulis stated as he gestured towards the teachers. “Now when your names are called come down to the stage. Your major instructor will give you each a partner, rank, and dorm number. The first name is…Tristian Renien.”
Red eyes watched as an eighteen-year-old boy stepped onto the stage. His black hair went down to his waist and his sharp orange eyes looked nothing like the bored gray ones of his father. Tristian walked across the stage and stood in front of Maye, who in turn handed him, a piece of paper. He looked at it before his left eye twitched, the action showing that he was annoyed.
“Brenaye Rei?” His smooth, soft voice contrasted greatly with the angry scowl on his face.
One of the twins shifted nervously before both her father and her sister gave her a shove towards the stairs leading towards the stage. Biting her bottom rosy brown lip she hesitantly began to walk down the stairs. Her white mid-thigh skirt swayed as she walked, her knee-high purple boots clicked as they touched the stone stairs. Her dark blue tank with a white sun being eclipsed by a purple moon scrunched up some as she stepped down the stairs. Her long green-haired pigtails twirled at either side of her head and the golden light shone against her medium brown skin.
As she walked towards him she tossed him a timid smile which thankfully removed his scowl. Instead now he had a slightly dazed look, chuckling Mr. Maye patted her on her back.
“Welcome Brenaye, I’ll be your major instructor since you did very well with your sword during the entrance exams.” Brenaye shyly mumbled a ‘thank you’. “Tristian here is your partner since you’re the only one that is even close the talent with the sword. You two will be sharing the 18th dorm room on level C.” He explained.
“Together?” She asked.
“Yep.” He answered.
Brenaye groaned. Turning she was surprised to see Erica, her twin, standing along side a boy with short pink hair and black eyes. Her sister’s hair was held back by a red headband yet other than that she let it flow free, it’s length reaching mid-thigh. Erica wore a red skirt along with a black tank that had a pair of red eyes on it. To finish her outfit, Erica had ankle length silver boots and silver bangles. The boy was encased in a full body of plate armor. Talk about heavy…
“This is my twin, Brenaye. Isn’t she lovely, James?” Brenaye blushed, as James looked her up and down.
“Yeah, but is she strong?” He challenged.
Brenaye’s eyes narrowed angrily. “I could give you a beating, asshole.” She retorted.
James raised an eyebrow at her before shrugging and turning to look at Tristian. He was clearly sizing them up since they were competition, sorta. Erica however didn’t seem at all that interested in them at the moment; instead she had already begun a conversation with another team. Brenaye watched as James soon went to join her, silently measuring that team too. She turned to see Tristian talking with her father, walking over she leaned against her father shoulder.
“Ah, here she is, my lovely angel! So Tristian what do you think of her, eh?” Larinous asked as he fondly patted the head of his shy yet strongest of his twins.
Tristian looked thoughtfully at Brenaye. He could sense that she was probably stronger than she looked. And he knew that if she had attained the rank of ‘5’ then she was at least intelligent. Smiling a soft smile he answered her father.
“I think that I’m lucky to have her as a partner.”
“Damn straight.” Larinous agreed.
Erica eventually made her way back over to them with James in tow. Brenaye frowned when she realized that she didn’t know what rank her sister had, or who was her major teacher.
“Erica, what’s you major and rank?”
“I major in the dark arts and I have the rank of ‘5’.” Erica stated proudly.
Brenaye nodded as she looked up at the gray clouds that covered the hole in the roof. She hoped that the clouds weren’t a sign of how their six years here would be.
