Random Walk

Chapter I

“The meeting is over,” Gina said and Luca almost sighed in relief. Almost anyway, because it was improper for him as the CEO to feel glad that the meeting was over. But the meeting was so boring anyway and the speech that was given by Roberto was so dull that he, as well as everyone else, was almost falling asleep. Maybe, this was the time for the old man to retire from his job and spend the rest of his life in Sardinia or Corsica.

“Signore Martelli?” Gina, his secretary, gave him a questioning look. “Are you feeling alright?”

“I’m only a bit tired,” he answered.

Gina didn’t seem to believe his answer but the she decided to drop the matter. Gina had worked for his family for almost three decades. She once was his father’s secretary and after his father died, he took over the family business and Gina became his secretary. She had known him since he was a child and now he could see the concern in her eyes but he chose to ignore it.

He was fine anyway. He had everything every man wished for. He was handsome, smart, and rich plus he was the head of the noblest family in Florence. And all women interested in the last two. He didn’t look like an Italian actually with his blond hair and icy blue eyes but that was not a problem. Women practically threw their self in his feet. He was, after all, every woman’s dream. And he used the knowledge to his full advantage. That really explained why he was called ‘l’amante Italiano.

Smirking inwardly, he walked out from his office building and got into his Ferrari. He didn’t go clubbing like usual but instead went home. He had to check a few things about the Renaissance Fair that would be held in Palazzo Martelli three months again.

The palazzo, which designed by the architects Brunelleschi, who was one of the pioneers of early Renaissance architecture in Italy, was a monumental building. It had been home of great lords for centuries and its spirit bowed to no man. In this palazzo, the Martelli family had reached its glory, along with the Medici family in the past.

He got out from his car and walked into the palazzo. The guards bowed as he entered the main gate. Today, some area of the palazzo was opened for the tourist even though most of the area still remained private. The wall was decorated by the arts masterpiece of the greatest artists such as Da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo and Boticelli. He stopped walking however when he saw someone standing in the hall. He frowned. This was private area, who the hell had given a permission to enter this area?

“Hey!” he called out.

And the boy turned. It was a boy, about nineteen or so, with hazel eyes and long dark hair. His skin was as white as snow so he guessed the boy must be a foreigner.

“This is private area,” he said in English. “Tourist isn’t allowed to enter this place.”

The boy blinked. “Oh, I’m sorry. “ His English was thick with American accent. “I don’t know about the rule. I only wanted to see the paintings here. Anyway, do you work here?”

‘I own this place.’ But instead he replied with a yes.

“That must be fun,” the boy continued. “You can see all of these art masterpieces everyday, anytime.” He was practically sparkling at the prospect.

“You like this?” Luca raised his eyebrow. “A teenager like you usually prefers night club.”

The boy frowned. “I’m not a teenager! I’m almost thirty you know!”

“You’re kidding me,” he looked at the boy. It was true that the boy’s face was so boyish and finely sculpted that it seemed age could never affect it but Luca found his statement ridiculous.

“I’m not! It’s not my fault that I look like a seventeen years old boy!” the boy huffed and crossed his arms on his chest, scowling.

Luca laughed. The boy in front of him looked nothing like a thirty years old man but he chose to follow the boy’s game. “Okay. Okay. I trust you. So you came from the States?”

“Yeah. I came here to spend my summer holiday.”

“With your classmate?’ he couldn’t help but teasing him.

“No!” the boy replied indignantly. “I work you know. I teach math.”

He hid his smile. This boy was fun to tease and he liked his carefree attitude. ‘I teach math.’ The boy probably only a tutor for elementary school student.

“Hey mister! We have been talking for five minutes and I don’t know your name yet.”

“Aren’t you supposed to mention your name first?”

“What?” the boy bristled like a cat in front of him. How immature for someone who self proclaimed that he was almost thirty. “Jeez! What’s wrong with you Italian guys,” the boy grumbled but he said his name too. “It’s Alex.”

"I'm Luca. Nice to meet you Alex and..." he smiled his most charming smile. "welcome to Florence."
