Wonderland

"We got the afternoon
You got this room for two"


James picked up the phone and hit the speed dial for his girlfriend, Gillian. He tapped his fingers impatiently on the desk. The phone rang once, twice, three times. As James had suspected, the answering machine cut in. "Hey! You've reached Gillian. I'm either studying or gone out, so leave me a message and I'll get back to you as soon as I can!" James waited a moment after the extended beep.

"Hey Babe, it's me-"

There was a click from the other end of the line and James smiled as Gillian picked up the phone.

"Hi Hun whats up?" she rushed, in one breath.

James laughed, "Not too much really, look outside."

Gillian slipped her coat off over her shoulders as she turned to push the blinds away from the window. Outside the grounds of the University residence were covered in a light layering of snow, and there were large flakes falling picturesquely from the sky.

"Oh my god!"

James laughed again. "So what are you doing?" He asked casually.

Gillian sighed, "I just ran over to the Music building to drop off a final paper, you?"

James glanced at his watch. 7:54 am. "Why so early?" he questioned.

Gillian plunked down on the stiff university mattress and sighed into the receiver. "We had to have the papers in by 8 this morning...I was up till three finishing mine this morning, so I had to make sure I was up early enough to get it under my professor's door in time."

"Oh."

"What are you doing up so early?" Gillian inquired, "Better still, why are you calling me so early?"

Although she couldn't see, James shrugged his shoulders. "I just wanted to know what your plans were for today, thats all."

Gillian smiled to herself. "Well, that was my last paper, so now I've got a few days to relax before I head home for Christmas break. You know that."

Relaxing, Gillian stretched out across the bed, sinking her head onto the soft down pillow she had brought from home. Breathing in deeply, she could smell the remains of James' adidas cologne. It had been weeks since he'd been able to come over and visit her.

Since their exams had started, both Gillian and James had been studying non stop, each of them aiming to have the top marks in their respective programs. They talked on the phone every night and met for coffee when they could coordinate a break from studying. James had quickly taken to the habit of leaving Gillian sweet, romantic messages on her msn.

He had never been one for romance, but when their time together was limited, James did all he could to make his girl feel special.


"Right. Well I just thought maybe we could spend the day together. Go for a walk in the snow, do lunch, maybe dinner too."

Gillian smiled.

"That would be amazing."

On his end of the line, James ran his hand through his hair and grinned. "Great. What time should I come by your place?"

"Give me half an hour, okay?" she replied, getting up off the bed and opening her closet door.

"No problem, see you then Beautiful." James hung up the phone and laughed, that girl made him so happy it was unbelievable.
