A Samurai Story

Chapter One:
Forest Games

The wind in the trees blew the leaves of the tall magnolia about and about until they seemed to dance to an unheard song. The sun did not shine, though, and the sky was grey and tremulous; rain was soon to come, or a storm.

The dim and dank colors of the sky now reflected upon the waters of a small stream as its little waves trickled onto the fallen leaves that covered its shore. Two children played in the red and yellow and browns of the dead dried leaves, and they laughed and sang sweet songs. They seemed to have little a care in the world as they closed their eyes and lay upon their backs amid the leaves, feeling with pleasure the coolness of the wind.

“I love the autumn...” One child said with a sigh. She was a pretty little thing, in a little pink kimono that was dotted with tiny little orange autumn leaves. Beside her lay her brother in nothing but a pair of hakama, and he relished the feel of the cool, autumn breeze on his bare skin.

“Yuika, Yamahiko...” A man’s voice ruined the childrens’ peace as they started and rose to their knees. Their hearts beat in their chests as they saw through the underbrush of the forest that they were in a young man peering at them through the leaves.

Gasping, they smiled broadly, stifling squeels of surprise as they leaped to their feet. The little girl giggled and hid behind her brother.

Pretending to draw from his sheath a sword, Yamahiko raised his fist high in the air. “You stay away... you big monster!”

“Oh! Monster am I?” The young man laughed as he leapt from the bushes. The two children started and ran from him, squeeling and laughing as they ran behind a great Magnolia. They said nothing but peered around the side of the tree as the young man stopped and tilted his body, looking one way, then looking the other.

“Where have they gone?” The young man said loudly, exaggerating his worry. “Where have the children gone? Oh, what will I take back to the village if I cannot bring my siblings home with me? Mother will be so worried! Father will surely have my head!” And he fell to his knees, laying back upon the leaves as he pretended to weep loudly and hystericaly.

Then, a small giggle came from behind the Magnolia. He shot up and grinned knowingly. Many more small giggles issued forth as he rose quietly, removing the sandals from his feet . A small face peeked out from behind the tree, but popped back as soon as it saw the young man looking upon it.

“I see you...!” The young man said with a sigh as he crept forward, smiling and making growling sounds with his throat as he neared the tree. The two children laughed, giving away their position.

Yuika squealed and crouched behind her elder brother as the young man peered from across the other side of the tree. “Gotcha!” He growled, though now his voice was hindered by laughter as the two children leapt into his arms and he held them there, rocking them wildly from back to fro as they laughed and kissed his cheek.

“Ah... children...” The young man murmmered with a content sigh as he tightened his embrace on the two little bundles. They lay their heads on each of his shoulders and Yuika kissed his cheek as he rose to his feet, carrying them away from their hiding spot.

“Hiroshi?” The young man, Hiroshi, looked to the little girl and lay his cheek upon her head in reply.

“Yes little one?” He said. The girl sat up in his arms and clapped her hands as if she were suddenly overcome with excitment.

“I heard that a show was to be played before us tonight! Brother said it isn’t true, but it’s what I heard by another little girl.”

Hiroshi laughed and nodded his head. “Yes, it is true... it is the cheif’s birthday today.” Here, Yamahiko sighed in dissapointment that he had been wrong and slumped over where he sat.

“The other samurai,” Hiroshi continued, “have asked that a band of Kabuki actors come to play for him. They were not far away, for they had stopped in their travels to the grand palace; we found them in a nearby village.” and Yuika squealed in delight.

“I told you Yamahiko, I told you!” She said as they wrestled in Hiroshi’s arms. He pulled them apart and held them firmly in each arm so that they were still.

“We near our village. You must behave now.” He said firmly. Yamahiko leapt down from his arms and pulled on his kimono, tucking it into his little hakama.

“You may carry sis into the village, but I will soon be a great warrior.... and I need no man to carry me. Only infants and girls are carried places.”

“I carried you thus far.” Hiroshi grinned, “And I have carried you other distances. Even great warriors are carried sometimes. After all, we carry the lives of all of you in our village upon our very shoulders. Can no one carry us?”

“But pride--”

“Pride? It is not demeaning to show weakness... it does not lessen the great pride you bear in your heart. Anyway, you are still a child and I am your elder brother and I will carry you anywhere I please.” Hiroshi smiled. “Now run along if you are to proud to be seen in my arms. I know that little Yuika, however, would not give up her seat here upon my arm for anything in the world!”

Yamahiko laughed and ran ahead, looking over his shoulder at his elder brother. Soemtimes, Hiroshi would tell him things he did not understand, and they were things he thought that he would never understand. If pride were so important to the samurai, then why say what he had said?

“Brother is such a silly thing.” Yuika said. Hiroshi chuckled and kissed her cheek.

“You do not have pride so great that you would leave my protection?” Hiroshi asked of the little girl, and she shook her head. “My arms are my protection for you and your brother. You are my siblings, and I would die if I lost you. I fear that if Yamahiko does not begin to listen to me soon, then he will fall into great trouble.”

“May I speak with him about that?” Yuika asked, but Hiroshi said that she must not, for it would only make little Yamahiko cross with her.

“I will spek with him, Yuika.” He said, “ And look, there is mother’s house. Go! Run and see her!” and even before he had finished, Yuika leapt from out of his arms and ran to where a small hut stood. The door slid open and there stood an elderly woman, dressed in a dingy brown and grey kimono, embracing the bouncing little girl who was telling her all about the coming Kabuki actors.

Mother, with a beautiful smile upon her face, waved to Hiroshi and he raised his hand to her in greeting.

“Oh, what I would do to insure that you all are safe forever.” He thought grimly as he went to his mother and wrapped his arms about her in a loving embrace.

“Anything.” He murmmered. “I would do anything to protect you.”
