“Yes, Cathy, the check is on it's way. And no, I can't give you extra this month." The phone clicked shut and Galen Karn dropped it into the console between the seats of his Pontiac Grand Prix. He hated talking to his ex, she just started complaining that he wasn't giving her enough money, but it was exactly what the judge ordered. Unfortunately, it was more than she deserved, considering they had been divorced for four years now. He blew out the tension he felt between his shoulder blades, forcing himself to calm down. He really didn't need it tonight, not that it was any better or worse for him to have it now than later. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, he opened the door and got out.
He actually hated teaching the night classes at the University. it wasn't because the students were older and non-traditional, but it more had to do with the fact that he was here for longer and would rather be out doing something interesting. Teaching introductory Astronomy at six in the evening certainly wasn't it.
Channa kissed her six-year-old daughter Aida on the cheek and walked towards the car. She dumped her things on the back seat and climbed into the 1995 Chevy Cavalier. She then looked up to the window where Aida always waved to her from and honked the horn as usual before waving out the window. Aida waved excitedly at her as she drove off down the street.
She had no idea why she was taking Astronomy or what she could do with that knowledge but it made her happy; especially after Carlos’ death. She made a left on Algonquin avenue and drove into the student’s parking lot after showing her parking pass to the security at the booth. Getting out of the car, she pulled her things off the back seat and dumped them on the hood. She flipped on her new jacket and tied the belt neatly around her waist. She fluffed her black hair and applied some more lip-gloss. Checking her face in the compact mirror, she grinned and headed inside.
Galen stopped by his office on the faculty floor and picked up his teaching materials. He wouldn't need much, having taught the class a number of times before. According to the class assignment, it was a smaller class this time, only thirty students. It was good for Galen, fewer papers to grade and less office hours for those who didn't get what he was trying to teach.
He walked into the class a few minutes early and sat in the first row of seats, putting his textbook and notebook paper on the small desktop. He'd wait here until everyone was seated and then get up to teach the class. It was always an interesting way to keep the students off guard.
Channa walked in and looked around. She hated being the first person anywhere. She should have stopped for that cup of coffee down the hall in the small coffee area. She smiled, “Good evening,” she said to the person sitting at the front of the class. She walked up a few rows then sat down behind him.
"Good evening," he returned the greeting, taking a second to admire her dark hair and nice complexion.
Pulling out her notebook, she crossed her legs. Opening the notebook she then pulled out a romance novel by Catherine Coulter that she had been reading and opened it to the page she last left off.
People started filing into the class, everything from middle-aged housewives to just teenagers who weren't able to afford a full education yet. Galen waited until three minutes after six and then stood up from his seat and walked up to the table at the front of the class. A number of people looked at him with a mix of confusion and bewilderment. He ignored them and leaned on the table.
"Good evening class. I'm Dr Karn. I'll be your teacher for Astronomy 1011."
~Wow~ Channa thought as she stuck the bookmark to the page she was on then closed it. She stuck the book into her purse and waited. A few of the girls around her started whispering about how cute the teacher was but Channa only rolled her eyes and moved down a few seats.
"Alright settle down," Galen said as he saw the woman with the dark hair get up and moved down a few seats. "This will be a ten week course, two nights a week. We'll be spending most of our time talking about what Astronomy is in our solar system. The web page is written on the board, and the syllabus is on it with a lot of good information. Questions?"
Channa looked around the room then began writing down the website address. She just bought a computer recently so the Syllabus should be no problem to get. She smiled to herself then sat up again waiting for what was to come next.
Galen started the first lecture with vigor, starting with what the universe is believed to be and why there are so many stars. He paused often to take questions and before long settled into a good pace. As he got into the discussion, he took off his blazer and rolled up the sleeves on his white dress shirt.
Channa heard a few giggles from the two blondes behind her and shook her head. She was too busy taking notes to even realize what was happening. When the notes finished she looked up and tried to catch up with the giggling girls but didn’t see it.
The hour ended quicker than Galen had expected, his watch beeped letting him know he had five minutes left, which he filled out by taking questions. Finally he turned to the class. "On Friday, we'll be starting Chapter two and three. Make sure you read it. There will be a question and answer session at the end of class. Any last questions?"
Channa closed her books and sat back. She knew the two blondes behind her would say something. One held up her hand and the other giggled.
Galen called on one young blonde woman and he hoped it would be something relevant to class. "Yes?"
“Ah yes,” she said clearing her throat, “Are you married?”
The class laughed but Channa only shook her head and stuffed her books back in her bag.
Crossing his arms, Galen frowned.
"Anyone have anything relavent to class?"
When there weren't any takers, he dismissed the class, "I have office hours immediately after class either here or in room 3522. Have a good night."
Galen sat down at the table in front of class and waited to see if anyone needed his services. It was still the first day, but who knew if someone had a question.
After the class cleared out Channa walked up to his desk, “Dr. Karn,” she spoke up so that he knew she was standing there, “My name is Channa Rayon. Can you tell me if there is anywhere that I could volunteer like once a week that would help me with this course?”
Dr Karn looked up at the student. She looked old enough to not be in college anymore, but still younger than he was. As for her request, he had, in the past, have people who wanted to do Astronomy work outside of class. "Well, I do run experiments up at the Fischer Observatory just east of town. They don’t run at specific times, but I'll be running one after class on Friday. If you'd like to come by and assist with one of my grad students and I, that'd give you a lot of information you wouldn't get in class."
She smiled brightly, “I’ll see if my daughter can do without me on a Friday,” she grinned, “its our weekly movie night.” She beamed proudly, “Thank you Dr. Karn,”
"No problem, Miss?"
She nodded, “Yes but please its Channa. Miss makes me sound so old.”
"Ok, Channa. Have a good couple days and I'll see you in class on Friday."
She smiled, “You too Dr. Karn.” She walked out the door then and he Cell phone began vibrating. She picked up, “Hey munchkin, you heading to bed?”
“I wanted to say good night,” Aida’s voice came over the line.
“Good night baby, sweet dreams.”
Aida blew her mommy kisses over the phone before hanging up.
