A Small Country
The year is 3004.
The final effects of Global warming settled in the year 2890, leaving only five major continents. The smaller islands along with Japan, South America, and a good portion of Asia, have fallen to the ocean floor. The strange array of surviving landmasses still confuses scientists and geologists.
The many powers of Europe have come together to form one power, called the United Kingdom. King of the U.K, Roldan, is ill, and very near to his end. He has just announced that his nephew Reginald will take the crown after him, and not his son Forbes.
The only other huge power is that of the United States. Their current President is Audric Denmark, married to the beautiful Danielle. Together they have a son, named Hadrian.
Aside from these large powers there are three neutral grounds, Canada, Mexico, and Australia. In 3000 Canada launched an attack on U.K., hearing of Roldan’s sudden illness they were sure they could win. They were brutally beaten back, and there remains hostility between them and the United Kingdom.
Technology has advanced far beyond the imagination could have ever wished for. Virtual Reality games have become so lifelike many people have died locking themselves into their consoles, preferring the simulated world to the real thing. Gamers are nearly a race unto themselves, having a different way of living than the vast majority. Computers are a necessity, without one a person simply could not function since the computers handle everything from cooking the food to house cleaning.
Earth itself has been altered drastically. Most of the once beautiful land is waste, hot and arid like a desert. There remain seven forests, these are blocked off to the public and guarded day and night. The land is dotted with huge cities, covered in domes, which help circulate breathable oxygen. In these cities there are huge apartment buildings, often square in shape, to house the public.
Peaceful suburban life is a thing of the past. When the forests began to die off and the oxygen deplete, the Government refused to build domes in the small communities outside cities, forcing the inhabitants to leave the Earth, or move to the city.
In the year 2090 we created hovering cars, but suffered more deaths in that year than the first 215 years after the automobile was created. Needless to say the project was scraped. Since the cities are so small, and since one can get everything they need from their computers, cars are no longer necessary.
The entire globe has branched out, building very successful spaceports, and huge dome cities on Mars and the moon.
There are very few schools of higher education left on Earth. Due to the impending doom scientists say will destroy the earth in less than fifty years, the world puts no value on them. One such school is the college Elsinore.
Elsinore lies on most of what used to be Florida, near to the gaping ocean. It is many stories high, for the classrooms, the shops, the dining areas and living areas for both students and teachers are contained in the single, oval building. A garden simulation, created by using old films and photographs, lies in the center of the building, and by leaning over the balconies, or walking through it, one can imagine what a real garden was like. Elsinore, no matter how high in prestige, is one of the only colleges to sport a non-governmental club outside its dome.
The Stratford-on-Avon is a large nightclub, open to all from 7pm to 7am. Over the past few years it has become a very controversial topic, for not only does it willingly disobey the government’s strict orders to card for alcohol, but also technology is very, very scarce. They have one or two computers to help run the business, and a separate virtual reality room. Other than that it resembles most pre-warming nightclubs: a huge dance floor, pulsing music, blinking lights, busy bar.
The President’s son, Hadrian, is nearing his 23rd birthday. He is currently attending Elsinore, and is now a senior. He is rarely seen without his close friends Brandon, Cassius, Rune and Sebastian.
The day is November 30th, and the Elsinore students are readily awaiting their autumn break.
