New Jersey, Rute I-95
Saturday, October 12
3:47 AM
Candy held the stearing wheel tightly as she sped down the long stretch of highway, knuckles turing white from the increased pressure. She knew for her daughters sake she need to stay calm on the outside, but one the insinde she was a nervous reck. She need to get them to safty.
They had left Massachusetts, to visit her sister in New Jersey, when he showed up unexpectedly. Why Candy thought he would ever let her live a normal life was beyond her. She had something that belonged to him and wouldn\'t let her forget it.
She was lost in thought when a soft voice brought her back to her senses.
\"Mommy I\'m tired.\"
Candy reached over and moved a stray lock of dark brown hair from her daughter\'s face. Looking into her hazel, she saw a sort of confusion and wearyness. She kept her gaze on her for another moment before looking back to the road.
\"I know sweetie but try to rest. We\'ll be at the motel shortly.\"
\"But you said we were going to see auntie Jean.\"
\"I know.\"
The little girl picked up a time warn bear, hugging it tightly to her chest. She smiled slightly as she looked out at the passing scenery.
\"I really like her.\" She giggled. \"She always lets me and Momo have lots of chocolate. We don\'t even have a bedtime or anything...\" She got a worried look her her eyes. \"Did you have a fight?\"
Candy let out a sigh, the events of the past few days finally catching up with her. If she could get to David everything would be alright. He seemed to have some strange sort of insinct that told him what need to be done.
\"No, we arn\'t fighting. There has been a change of plans and I won\'t be going there right away.\"
\"Oh.... but we can still go, right?\"
She gave the little girl the first genuine smile she had all day.
\"Of course we will. I have to meet an old friend in Mystic Islands first.\"
Pulling a stand of sandy blond hair out her face, she looked out at the nearly desolate road. A few more turnoffs and she finnly saw her exit. It was another mile and a half and she parked the navy blue Mazda in the lot.
\"Wait here and I\'ll be right back. I\'m going to get us a room so we can get some sleep, okay honey.\"
The little girl nodded her head in agreement. \"Okay mommy. You won\'t be long, right?\"
\"I\'m just going inside for two minutes them I\'ll be right back.\"
\"Promise?\"
\"Mm hm, I promise. I\'m going to lock the doors. You stay here and don\'t let anyone in.\"
“Ok mommy.”
The woman quickly made her way inside. Behind the counter sat a old looking man. He had gray thinning hair, which was mostly gone on the top. His blue eyes held a sort of wisdom and and laughter. Handsome wasn\'t a word she would use to describe him, but he wasn\'t ulgy either, more like well aged.
Her heals clicked softly across the velvet carpet that covered the floor. Looking around she noticed pictures hung on the walls, mostly people smiling or laughing. There were a few others of old building and such. Other than that the place didn\'t really have any real decorations.
As she reached the counter, the man gave her a heart warming smile. “Seems kinda late for a lovely young lady like yourself to be out. Is there something I can help you with?”
“Actually I\'m on my way to visit an old friend of mine. I need a room for the night.”
He nodded towards her. “No problem mam.” He turned to a large key holder on the wall. Grabbing one on the bottom row, he turned to her with a serious look on his face. “I do have two rules though. It\'s $45 a night, up front. No execptions. There will be no parting or you will be made to leave. Had too many kids last summer trashing the rooms. If you have any questions I\'ll be here till 6. That\'s when my wife will be coming in. She\'ll help you anything you may need.”
“Alright, thank you.”
Pulling out her wallet, a thought dawned on her. She didn\'t bring much cash when she left. If he didn\'t take credit cards she would have to hit the road and look for another place to sleep.
“I\'m sorry sir, I forgot to ask if you take credit cards. I didn\'t bring much cash and I\'m not sure if I have enough to cover the room.”
“No, mam.” He pointed to a sign on the counter. “I\'m sorry but it\'s cash only”
“Oh.” Looking at the ball of bills in her hand she noticed she was five dollars short. “I guess we\'ll have to look for somewhere else to stay. I don\'t have enough. Sorry for wasting your time.”
She truned to leave, but was stopped by his question.
“I know it ain\'t any of my business but do you have someone else with you?”
Candy turned to face him. There was no real reason to lie. No one knew where she was, at least she hoped that was the case. With him she never really knew.
“Yes, I have my daughter with me.”
“How old is she?”
“Just turned 5 last month.”
She saw him let out a low sigh as he grabbed the key off of the counter.
“Here, you can have the room for the night.”
“Not that I\'m complaining, but I thought you said there was no exceptions and I don\'t have enough money to pay. I can get you the money tomorrow if--”
“Don\'t worry about it. It\'s on the house. We aren\'t busy this time of year so I won\'t be losing any money.”
“Thank you, it\'s very kind. I really appreciate it.”
“I have a grandaughter about your daughters age. It\'s late and I can\'t see you having to drag her around till you get to the next motel. She needs a bed to sleep in. Sitting in a car isn\'t anyway to get a good sleep. Believe me I know. I drove trucks all over the United States.... Besides the wife would have my head if she found out I turned a mother and child away.”
As she stepped outside it suddenly seemed darker to her, for some reason. Not that it made any sense because it wasn\'t possible. Maybe it was all of the tension finally catching up with her.
Candy took her keys out and unlocked the door, noticing her daughter had already fallen asleep. Carefully lifting her up, she used her foot to close the car door. When she got to the door, Candy realized that she wouldn\'t be able to open it with the sleeping child in ther arms. Carefully shifting her so she had one hand free, she finally got it unlocked.
The room wasn\'t anything spectacular but it was in reletivly good condition. The walls, like the carpet, was done in light browns. A tv sat on a table in the middle of the wall nearest the door and the only other things in the room was the queen size bed and a small refriderator. There was two other doors, she assumed went to the bathroom and the closet.
The little girl didn\'t even move when she placed her on the bed, exhaustion must have finally cought up with her. They had been traveling most of the day so it wasn\'t unexpected.
The bathroom was rather small, but that didn\'t matter. It was done mostly in white with nothing more then a sink, shower, and a tolet. Turning the fauset on she splashed cold water on her face. Drying off she went into the room, not bothering to try to pull the covers down. She was sore and tired, sleep was the only thing she was able to think about.
She lay there for several minutes looking at the curtans, waiting for sleep to claim her. There was a soft ticking from a clock she realized must have been hanging over the bed. Her body started to feel heavy as she drifted of in to the land of dreams, but a distant noise of a door being shut caught her attention.
Getting out of bed, she pulled the light brown curtans back and peeked out. There was nothing out there but the hairs on the back of her neck still stood up on end. Just as she was about to return to bed there was a light knock on the door, causing her to jump.
\'He couldn\'t have found me here. It isn\'t possible.\'
The knock came again, a little louder than before. Swallowing the lump that formed in the back of her throat, she went to the door.
“W-who\'s there?”
“Sorry to disturb you mam, but you left your wallet at the desk.”
Candy let out a breath she didn\'t even know she had been holding as she unlocked the door. Just outside the man stood there holding a small black object she recognized as her wallet.
“Thank you. I don\'t know what I would have done if I left it here.”
“It\'s not a problem mam. Just be careful in the future. Not all that many people out there that are as honest as I am. Well good night mam.”
She went to shut the door when out of the corner of her eye she saw someone with a large object. He hit the old man over the head. The force caused him to collaps, red liquid trickling from the spot of contact.
She didn\'t even have time to scream as she felt something sharp cut through abdomen. \'How she thought as spots started to blur her vision.\' He said something as started to fall to the floor.
“You didn\'t think you could get away from me, did you?” He laughed. “No, not when you have what\'s mine. You are nothing but a filthy whore and you will die just like the rest of the filthy whores.”

Summer\'s Motel
Sunday, October 13
6:15 AM
May pulled in to the parking lot knowing that her husband wouldn\'t like the fact she was late. Sure it wasn\'t by much, but being a military man, he was always preaching to her about being punctual. Not that she ever listened. All she had to do was threaten to stop cooking for a week and it would shut his mouth for a while. He wouldn\'t admit it out loud, but to May\'s girlfriends, it was clear who really wore the pants in the family.
Unfortunately military men, weather young or old, seemed to be stuck in their ways. Not that it was a bad thing, not at all. But she did tire of all of the lectures she would get about how it was when he served his country. Staying up late hours, getting up early and still being able to make it on time.
Walking into the main office, she noticed that his usual cup of coffee and doughnut wasn\'t sitting on the desk. Neither was the morning edition of the Free Press, but before she got herself worked up over nothing she disided to go check the rooms. There was a good chance that there had been an electrical problem. Lord knows the place could use an over haul on several of the rooms.
Outside the builing she didn\'t notice anything unusual, that is until she turned the corner to look at the back rooms. Her husband was still laying on the ground with a rather large lump on his head. Without thinking May ran over to make sure he was still alive.
“John! John what happened to you?!”
He opened his eyes and looked up. His vision was still a little blurry but he knew by the sound of the woman\'s voice that his wife was calling him.
“I\'m ok May. Just got a little bump on the head is all.”
“You had me worried sick. What happened to you?”
“A woman came here last night with her daughter looking for a room. She left her wallet so I brought it to her. After I told her good night someone hit me... hard too.”
He looked over noticing the door was still open but no one was in side. A chill ran up his spine as he realized that who ever attacked him could have done the same to the woman and her child.
“May, call the police. I got a bad feeling in my gut... and it usually isn\'t wrong.”
She didn\'t bother to argue with him. Even though she knew he should have his head checked, but when he got that tone of vioce he usually didn\'t change his mind.
John saw his wife walking away as he stepped inside the room, noticing the small red stain on the carpet. Nothing in the room was knocked over so he assumed that who ever was there must have left with the woman. He was almost sure of it, that is until he walked inside the bathroom.
It was like something out of a horror movie. Dark red painted the walls and the half naked woman was lying in the bathtub. He turned and left the room, not wanting to disturb anymore of the evidence he already might have. He might have recived a blow to the head, but it didn\'t stop the rational side of his brain form working.
May was still on the phone when he walked into the office.
“Did you find anything?”
“Yeah, and believe me when I tell you not to go in there.”
The room fell into dead silence as they waited to the sound of the wailing sirens to be heard.
