Heartbreak
This story first debuted on fictionpress.com under my PrincessYaoi alias. I\'m rewriting it, putting in a little more detail and such. I am warning you all that this is a slash (contains male/male relationships of the adult varitey). That being said, I do appreciate constructive criticism. If this story can be made better in any way please let me know. Also, if anyone would consider being my beta, I would really appreciate it!

Any other springtime, Nersa would have declared that this was the most beautiful place he had ever been. The moon shone serenely on the balcony where he stood, lighting the gardens that ended just beyond the rail. The lilac bushes and rose bushes were trimmed neatly, dancing along the paths that hid fountains and sculptures until just after you turned the corner. Some of his happiest moments were spent in those gardens, laughing and conversing with the Lady Erinias. He had met her in those gardens, introduced to her by Sai Mobok, her second cousin and a distant relative of his own.
It was love at first sight. The courtship had moved slowly because there were other suitors that demanded Erinias\'s time, but it was obvious that she preferred Nersa. The competition for her attention waned and eventually ended as the relationship between the two young lovers progressed. Rumors of an imminent engagement spread like wildfire; then the unthinkable happened.
Nersa received a scathing letter from Erinias declaring that she no longer loved him, and had accepted the offer a more wealthy nobleman. All of his attempts to visit her were futile. The last time he tried to visit he ended up giving the butler a black eye before storming away from the Tirantin estate. Erinias\'s younger sister, Mari found him drunk just outside the local tavern that night, and managed to sneak him inside the manor. Mari had always envied her sister\'s courtship with the handsome aristocrat. Once the inebriated Nersa was in her room, Mari took full advantage of the situation. It frustrated her no end that he called out her sister\'s name, not just once or twice, but four times. Mari had persisted in her attempts, until the final time. When Nersa made that final pleasurable murmur for Erinias, Mari called for the guards. Nersa was thrown out of the building quite forcibly. Erinias fell sick soon after.
Upon hearing of her illness, Nersa snuck back to the estate, and hid on the balcony just outside her room. Erinias sounded as though she were in horrible agony. Her groans ruined what would otherwise be the most beautiful of spring nights. When the doctors left, Nersa crept into her room and knelt beside her bed. Erinias looked at him painfully.
\"How could you?\" She uttered softly, \"I loved you. How could you betray me?\"
\"What are you talking about?\" Nersa demanded, trying to keep his voice low, \"You sent me a letter saying that you were engaged to someone in Firtra.\"
\"Never...I was waiting for your proposal...\" Erinias coughed sharply, tilting her head away from Nersa. The blonde man ran his fingers through his long hair, thinking.
\"You mean you didn\'t send the letter?\" He asked gently. Erinias shook her head from side to side, and Nersa sighed heavily. Another coughing fit seized the young lady, and Nersa became aware of how pale she really was. \"Have the doctors found a cure?\"
\"There is no cure.\" Erinias whispered weakly, \"They say I have a few months to live at best.\" Nersa brushed hair away from her eyes. He wanted to tell her that they were wrong, that there had to be a cure, yet he could not think of a way to save her. He knew nothing of medicine, and he had distinctly heard Dr. Nune\'s voice. If Nune held out no hope, there was no hope to be had; Nune knew everything there was to know about medicine.
\"There is one way to save her,\" a voice said from the doorway. Nersa started to his feet, and looked to see Sai. \"It\'s called the \'Heart of the Gods\'.\"
\"You mean that old legend?\" Nersa scoffed. \"You don\'t really believe the souls of the gods exist, do you?\"
\"I\'ll lend you my finest airship, the Windsong. I\'ll even serve on the crew under your command,\" Sai offered. He opened his mouth to say more, when the sound of approaching guards cut him off. \"Quick, outside!\" Sai hissed, shoving Nersa out onto the balcony. They had not escaped a moment too soon.
\"I heard voices,\" a guard explained calmly as his heavy shoes sauntered into Erinias\'s room. \"Hello, what\'s this?\" Nersa felt a tug on his cloak and panicked.
\"Come on!\" He yelled, jumping over the railing of the balcony and worked his way down to the garden. Sai followed close behind him, and the two made it out of the manor walls just in the nick of time. They continued to run for some time. When they were certain that they had escaped the guards, both men collapsed on the ground, breathing heavily.
\"So I guess you accept my offer?\" Sai asked, breathing heavily. Nersa nodded slowly.
\"What choice do I have?\" Nersa wanted to know, \"I can\'t just leave her to die.\"
\"Right,\" Sai agreed. With some effort, he stood up and offered his hand to Nersa, helping him up too. \"We should head to the air harbors. I\'ll alert the crew to our mission in the morning.\"
