Our Farewell

She couldn’t believe he was gone, her best friend. He’d never laugh with her again or tease her about her obsessions. She felt empty, like her soul had been taken. The only thing that kept her going was the promise she had made him.

Today was the day she would keep that promise.

The cortege pulled up outside the doors and what little conversation there had been slowly died away.

Just like he had, she thought, slowly wasting away until there was nothing left but a spirit stubbornly holding on to a life that wanted to leave.

Taking her place in the line she slowly followed the coffin into the crematorium.

Taking a seat near the front, she stared at the box that held her friend, the preacher’s words washing over her like a breeze, barely felt.

She didn’t stir or look away until she heard the words she had been waiting for.

Rising to her feet, she shakily made her way to the front and took her place behind the podium.

She stared out at the sea of faces before her and nervously began to speak.

‘We would always sing together, Jonathon and me, even in the hospital. He always said that he could never reach me, my voice was in the rafters.’

She paused.

‘As he lay dying he asked me to promise him something. He made me promise to sing his favourite song on the day of his funeral. He said that if I sent my voice into the rafters maybe he would meet me there.’

She smiled gently.

‘I’m here to keep my promise.’

As the familiar strains filled the room she took a deep breath and started to sing

‘In my hands
A legacy of memories
I can hear you say my name
I can almost see your smile
Feel the warmth of your embrace
But there is nothing but silence now
Around the one I loved
Is this our farewell?

Sweet darling you worry too much, my child
See the sadness in your eyes
You are not alone in life
Although you might think that you are

Never thought
This day would come so soon
We had no time to say goodbye
How can the world just carry on?
I feel so lost when you are not at my side
But there\'s nothing but silence now
Around the one I loved
Is this our farewell?

Sweet darling you worry too much, my child
See the sadness in your eyes
You are not alone in life
Although you might think that you are’

As the instrumental music rose to a crescendo, she raised her eyes to the rafters above her, her eyes widened.

Through the tears welling in her eyes she could make out a vague figure sitting in the corner. A smile started to grow as she finished singing, face raised high. Singing a duet one last time.

‘So sorry your world is tumbling down
I will watch you through these nights
Rest your head and go to sleep
Because my child, this not our farewell.
This is not our farewell.’
