He'll Have to Go
Laurie looks out the window sometimes at night and she sees his flashlight; standing by the old apple tree, looking up at her window, he keeps his light pointed at the ground. Sometimes she’ll turn the radio up a little, give him something to listen to; it must be boring, standing out there all evening.
Along about 11 oclock, a little after Momma and Poppa go to bed, most nights he calls then. Talking on her princess phone, leaning back against the headboard, she’ll paint her toenails sometimes, with the phone adjusted just so, so her curlers don’t get in the way.
“You wearing your babydoll pajamas, Laurie?” His voice is kind of low. “What color are they?”
“You know they’re blue, Jud,” she waves her toes so the Pink Passion will dry faster. “I told you before.”
“Blue…” Laurie thinks he sounds sexy, like a singer on the radio. “Who are you wearing them for?”
“What’s that?”
“Who’s with you, Laurie?” She has to work to hear his voice, it’s so soft. “Who do you let into your bedroom, while I’m here all alone?”
Her voice tight, “There’s no one with me.”
“Is it Roger?”
“No…”
“Dick?” Her only answer is a gasp. “Tell him to leave, Laurie. I want you alone with me.”
“There’s no one here.”
“Put your lips closer, Laurie; I want to kiss you,” and she does, she can’t help it. “Sweet Laurie, just made for me.” She’ll listen to him, eyes closed, head back against the pillows. “Tell him not to come back, tell him you’re mine. I’m the only one who can come into your bedroom at night.”
Jud calls just about every night. She won’t look out the window, not while she’s talking to him; she knows he’s down the road at the pay phone. Once they’re finished talking, that’s when he’ll come back; that’s when she’ll see his flashlight under the apple tree again.
Laurie likes having someone who loves her this much. No one else she knows has a lover under their window pretty nearly every time they look. Besides, Jud can’t try anything, not with Momma and Poppa asleep downstairs.
But Momma and Poppa are in Rensellaer tonight. And she’s done talking to Jud on the phone. He’s coming back to her house pretty soon. Laurie has the door locked, but it’s an awful old door. Someone could get in if they wanted to.
