IN THE GRAVE
She makes your heart break
to look upon her face
The life she’s led shines
through her eyes
Too rough for a beauty of
her kind
Yet she never says a word to
betray her pain
A private place she goes to
so she can face the memories
Maybe she should just bury
them in the grave
Her eyes sometimes seem dead
and empty
That look worries silent
watchers
And somehow she always finds
her way back
Acting as though there’s
nothing unsettling
She’s lost too many pieces
of herself over the years
Fighting to fit in and be
strong and brave
Emotions and situations she
shoves aside
Going on when there’s not
even a promise of a dream
She wanders aimlessly
searching for security
Hoping that someone’s arms
will hold her safe at night
All that welcomes her are
nightmares
Engulfing her senses and
occupying precious time
Maybe she should just bury
them in the grave
Not even trying she makes
you feel
Pity is useless to her and
she’ll tell you so
Empathy is a joke unless you
experience her past
She fruitlessly hopes for a
simple rescue
But she knows that the
saving must come from her
As all things must in the
end
There is no one who will let her turn to them
They claim she overwhelms them
with her pain
Silence is the lock to her
deep misery
Anything she deems to show
you of herself is rare
The masks she wore have been
stripped bare
Broken apart like her very
inner being
It’s a wonder that she is
not utterly destroyed
Burning inside out as
memories assault her like punches
Maybe she should just bury
them in the grave.
