Lilly's Blood (edited)
Lilly laughed as she raced her friend Rachel down the hall then out of her school. The sun shone brightly on the sidewalks as her bag bounced against her back. Being 8 she loved running outside with a friend after school. It was a ritual..once the bell rang the first one to Lilly\'s apartment building won. Rachel laughed as she looked over at her, Lilly adored her green eyes, \" Lilly you know no one ever wins, we always tie.\" Lilly simply smiled at her, \" Guess that just means we\'re even for now.\" She said sticking her tounge out.
The street smelled of hotdogs from a vendor they\'d passed and they both stood panting outside the steps leading up to Lilly\'s apartment. Rachel tucked her curly brown hair behind her ears and straightened her red back pack. \" Alright Lilly, another tie. I\'ll see you tommorow in class.\" Rachel smiled as she waved and turned to leave. Lilly nodded waving as well, \" Yeah I\'ll be there.\" She smiled watching her friend untill she turned a corner then made her way inside. She caught the smell of burnt popcorn, the Marids always burned their popcorn. She shook her head in amusement as she made her way up a set of stairs. The building was 5 floors, she and her brother lived on the top floor.
On the fourth floor Miss.Damen was walking out of her door and smiled at Lilly. Miss.Damen was one of the nicest people here, in her late 70\'s and she had a faint smell of peppermint around her. Lilly glanced around her and sure enough saw the cats she kept. There were tons of them, her favorite one however being a dark grey one with piercing green eye named Shadow. Miss.Damen closed her door as she walked voer to Lilly, \" Hello dear, how was school today?\" Lilly smiled, \"It was fun like always, except gym of course, they made the girls play soccer again while the boys played football.\" She said with a frown. Miss.Damen laughed a bit shaking her head, Lilly loved how her grey hair was curled and bounced around her shoulders when she moved. Her eyes matched her hair color to, they were a fading grey, but filled with life. Miss.Damen closed her purse then looked back down at Lilly. \" So dear, do you know the gentlemen who were visiting Steven today?\" Lilly arched and eyebrow and shook her head, \" Nu uh, he didn\'t tell me anything about anyone being over.\" She said worriedly. Miss.Damen shrugged, \" They didn\'t stay long, they went up, I heard a lot of moving and a bit of a ruccuss but they left a few minutes after they went up.\" She put a smile back on patting Lilly\'s head, \" Well I\'ve got to go down to the store, you be good now and tell Steven I said hello.\" Lilly nodded, \" Yes Miss.Damen.\"
Hours later, Lilly found herself sitting on the front steps with a blanket over her shoulders. She stared blankly down at the dark sidewalk as the flashing red and blue lights filled the shadows. An Ambulance closed it\'s back doors and took off down the street to the hospital. Four police cars were still parked on the street in front of her. She remembered everything, though she didn\'t want to. All she\'d down was tossed her bag on the couch and walked to Josh\'s room. Nothing seemed out of place, the lights had been turned off like normal. The door handle had been wet and a little warm. His bedroom lights were turned off when she opened the door so she had to trun them on. Red streaks were on the light blue walls and wooden floor. Steven was just there...against the wall. His brown hair was wet...and hung in his eyes. She could tell they were closed but wished they weren\'t. His red muscle
shirt had blothes of what seemed like a black or dark brown colored liquid. However his blue jeans and white sneakers had red blotches on them.
She remembered how everything seemed to slow down. She\'d noticed that his shoulders weren\'t the same. They had daggers in them, looking closer she saw his feet weren\'t flat on the floor. He was dangling about an inch off the foot, the daggers holding him up. Taking a step foreward her foot hit a puddle of blood and she slipped. She could still remember falling on it,and getting it all over her hands, elbows and back of her pants. The police had wrighten it all down word for word. The scream she didn\'t remember. Miss.Damen said that\'s how she knew to turn around and rush back up. It had been loud and very high pitched. Nothing she\'d ever heard Lilly do before but then again she\'d never seen her cry either. That\'s how Miss.Damen found her though, screaming as she sat on the floor in a puddle of blood, face burried in her hands against her knees, while Steven remained agains the wall dead.
An officer had picked her up off the floor while paramedics rushed to get Steve off the wall and down to the ambulance. He\'d taken her to the bathroom to wash her arms off, then stood outside her door while she changed her pants. Then he brought her downstairs, they\'d wrapped a blanket around her to try and stop the shaking and went around asking everybody questions. A box sat in her lap, they\'d realised Steven was dead and taken his things and given them to Lilly. It was an old shoebox they found in the apartment. She opened it up carefully and pulled out the locket he wore. It was a golden heart, hand shaken she undid the clasp and opened it up. She sat looking at two differnt pictures, one of her parents smiling and hugging each other. The other was her and Josh the same way, it had been taken last year. The one of her parents had been taken before either of them were even born.
The sound of footsteps made her look up. What was left of the officers walked out and over to their cars. The same man who\'d picked her up stopped sitting next to her for a second taking off his hat. She stared at him, his blue eyes were icy and saddened while his black hair was messy from his hat and cut short. He let out a sigh and she smelled coffee on his breath. \" Lilly...Miss.Damen offered to take you tonight.\" That was good, she could spend time with Shadow. \" However..tommorow...I\'m affraid is off to foster care.\" With that he put his hat back on, gave her a small smile, and elft with everyone else.
She knew Miss.Damen was standing in the door way behind her, not knowing what to say. Lilly looked in the box again. There was his wallet, a watch and his ring. She took the ring out, it was to big for her to wear so she slipped it on the chain. It was a black rose intertwining with a dagger, Lilly had gotten it for him for his birthday. Her hands still shook but she managed to get the necklace around her neck and fasten the clasp. Steven was the only family she had left. Her parents had died in a fire at their job. Steven never talked about their job though, or his for that matter. He simply taught her how to use weapon like swords and daggers. Taught her how to work out properly and stay strong. He even made her promise to never lose hope. She closed the box looking at the ground as she got up and went inside with Miss.Damen. He was her hope, the only thing left that kept her strong and gave her a reason to keep trying for what she beleaved in. She never told him that, now she never could.
