Falling on Deaf Ears
I made no money from the writing of this story.
Falling on Deaf Ears.
It was a crisp winters night. The sky was clear of clouds as a pale moon hung low in the sky and the stars twinkled lively as there light glistened off the snow-covered valley. The countryside was stirred by the icy winters wind, as a single figure trudged along the country road. The figure was tall and shrouded in shadow. The hedgerows were thick and tight to the road, a bountiful shelter from the wind. The road sparkled with black ice as it wound its way through valleys and round hills.
Danny trudged slowly through the snow; she was in no hurry to get home. The wind whistled round her legs and caused her to stumble. Maybe she should walk faster. She followed the road as it slithered through the countryside, gliding round bends and gathering at corners. The road smoothed round a corner, swelling up to form a bridge over the gargling stream below. There, Danny stop to catch her breath, maybe rest a while. She glanced down at the stream. It was almost completely frozen over, only slithers of renegade water trickled through the encroaching barricades of ice that was beginning to freeze the stream solid.
As Danny gazed up her vision was met by the soft gleam of the stars. Oh how Danny loved the stars, they were bright, brilliant"¦ endless. They would always be there, always shining there light for everyone to see. They would always be there for her, to guard and guide her, unlike some. She loved how resilient they were; even on the most overcast nights there would always one who's light would pierce through the cloud. In Danny's mind they never aged, they were forever"¦ they'd never leave.
Danny was brought out of her trance by the screams of a passing motorbike, Danny jumped, startled by this midnight banshee. She took a few moments to compose herself before heading off down the road towards the warmth of home. Her pace quickened now as she neared her home, almost there. She darted from the cover of the hedgerows towards her door. The chill of the night air stung her cheeks, stabbing her with a thousand pins causing her eyes to well with pain. Almost home now, only the garden path to scamper along.
As she changed for bed she noticed the note on the pillow, no surprises there, Ben was working late again. Working late again! She laughed softly and shook her head. For the worlds lowliest man to be working late was hilarious. That man had never worked a day in his life, why would he start now. She knew he was only interested with the money and the comfort that came with their relationship. It had been an easy way in for him. Why do all that hard work when you can just marry the boss's daughter instead. Did Daddy know this? Of course he doesn't! , He only ever sees what he wants to, especially, with family.
Danny has known her father for about twenty-one years, yet she only knows enough about him to fill a Post-it, One side of a Post-it if you were lucky. He loved to organise everything. His work, shares, his bank accounts"¦ even his family. On the rare occasions when they met he would always say, "Smile Daddy's little princess. I'll give you anything you want, life for you will be as smooth as glass and as simple as diamonds."
As smooth as glass. She laughed again. Her life had been anything but smooth. She was always Daddy's favourite pawn in the game of business. Date the companies ever changing, new, up and coming stars. Date this month's super hunk; oh you just look so good together. Out to dinner with Daddy's rival's son to spy on business. Ever time he would promise this would be the last time, and every last time never was. When he had eventually chosen Ben to be her husband, that thought had driven her mad. Every time Ben's fat, stubby hands touched her she wanted to scream. To throw them back at him. Wanted to scream at him she was her own person. Wanted to hit him until he lay there dying and pleading for mercy, for help. She'd stand there over him and watch him. Watch the light drain from his eyes as he realised that his screams fell on deaf ears. Just like hers. Screams for freedom, screams in vain, for her own life back.
In the morning Danny woke and sombrely dressed. She'd go to her parent's house, she hadn't been there for a what she felt was ages. She headed out at a brisk walk, she'd misplaced her car keys days earlier and she still couldn't find them. But she didn't mind the walk, it let her burn a few useless hours from her day, what else was there to do in this sort of weather anyway? She neared the bridge again and glanced down at the stream, it was completely frozen over as if time it's self had stopped and all life had been drawn away from it. Danny continued to stroll and take in the lure of the countryside as she neared her parent's house.
As she started down the drive to her parent's house she noticed that the sun was already setting. It couldn't be that late already could it; surely it couldn't have taken her all that time to walk to her parent's house. Maybe while she was walking she'd lost track of time. Yes that was it, she'd just lost track of the time. She opened the door to her parent's house and shut it firmly behind her. She had just removed her jacket and scarf when her mother appeared in the hall. "My, these houses aren't half drafty in winter" her mother murmured as she pulled her robe around her tighter, and headed up the stairs.
"That's a nice thing to say to your daughter!" Danny sneered. Her mother never replied except for a small, inaudible murmur as she climbed the stairs to bed. Danny look bemused for a moment, then shrugged her last encounter with her mother off. Must be the medication. She headed to room. It was just the way she left it, her clothes and posters decoratively strewn across the room. She liked to see it as a tidy mess. She'd stay here the night and head for home tomorrow when it was light. Where had the time gone that day?
In the morning Danny woke expecting one of her mother's best-loved breakfast, a raspberry smoothy and toast with marmalade. To her disappointment there was nothing, only a note. Gone to the market. I'll be back in time for dinner, I'll make us something special. Danny smiled glumly. She should really be heading home, but on the other hand she hadn't spent time with her mum for a while. She'd hang around from dinner. What harm was a couple of hours.
Danny sat around to five o'clock when she decided to have a bath. The water swirled around her claming and relaxing her, the water was hot but not scalding, just hot enough to work out the tension in her muscles. Just as soon as Danny had found serenity, the phone rang. She got to the phone just in time for the answering machine to take the call. "Hi dear, it's me. Sorry I'm so late but I've bumped into some old friends and we're going out for dinner together. I'll make dinner another time."
"Great mum. Nice to see you still as considerate as always." Danny groused.
Danny headed back up stairs and drained the bath. It had lost all meaning now; the knots that it had once begun to sooth were now like a ball of rubber bands. Danny dressed and headed home; after all it was only just after seven. Once again Danny wandered slowly home, and once again time had flown so quickly by. It was usually only a two-hour walk to her parents, yet now it felt as if it was way after twelve. As she neared her home, it was probably the snow that had slowed her. Defiantly the snow, after all it was 4 inches deep. It hadn't fallen that deep in years.
As she reached the bridge she was caught in the glare of headlamps as they rounded the corner, dazzling her. As the car hurtled over the bridge she was covered in a blizzard of slush, she turned in time to see that it was Ben's car. "He must be off to work late again" she laughed. Off to work late.
When she got home she was startled by the state of her living room. The couch was in pieces and her favourite pillows were spilling their feathered contents everywhere. If that wasn't bad enough when she reached the bedroom the bed was a mess, the sheets were dirty and what was that? Was that a bra? It is a bra. She snatched the bra up from its final resting place and shook it with all her might. Working late. Now I know what that sponge has been up too. All this time and he's been playing me like a fool! Well know more of that! Wait till he gets in.
Danny stormed down the stairs and sat ridged on the couch, bolt up right and unflinching. Uncaring. Wait till he gets in! He won't know what hit him!
Unfortunately Danny's rage turned to wariness and she feel asleep on the couch. When she awoke she heard giggling from the bedroom up stairs. She stormed up the stairs and into the room "Steph! You slut! What do you think you're doing?" Danny roared. Ben and Steph leapt apart form each other "I'm sorry" Ben yelled, ""¦I'm sorry" he said again his voice no more than a wisper.
"I'm sorry's not good enough! What were you thinking?" Danny screamed.
"I'm sorry"¦ I don't know what I was thinking" Ben muttered as he sat down on the edge of the bed.
"And Steph! You're noting but a slut! That's all you are, and guess what? You're welcome to him." Danny swung at him and hit the bedside stand knocking the picture frames to the floor.
"What's wrong?" Steph cooed and moved closer to Ben.
"What's wrong? "¦ What's right? " Danny yelled.
"I knew I shouldn't have"¦" Ben muttered.
"It's too late for shouldn't now!" Danny roared.
"It's too soon"¦ she's only been gone a month." He whispered.
"Who's gone? Another one of your tarts!" Danny bit back.
Ben reached down and picked the picture frames off the floor, Steph seeing Ben's pain moved to hold him close. "I can't believe she's gone"¦ it's all my fault. I should never have let her walk home that night. I should have picked her up"¦ its all my fault." Her sobbed.
"Ben" Steph cooed gently kissing his temple and squeezing him tighter. "Ben"¦ listen to me. It"˜s not your fault. If there's anyone to blame then it's that motorcyclists." Steph soothed rubbing him back in light circles.
"What the bloody Hell does a motorcyclist have to do with this?" Danny screamed. "What's wrong? Can't you hear me? "¦ " Danny declared?
"Cheer up" Steph purred. "Danny wouldn't want to see you like this now if she was here, would she?" Steph asked softly. Ben "˜s tears had stopped but her was still a little forlorn " I just miss her so much now she's gone"¦ sometimes it even feels like she's still here"¦ still with me."
"What are you to deaf? I'm still standing here"¦ I'm not dead! Stop messing with me"¦ you're the one's who are wrong. Ben! "¦Ben! If you love me then you'll get her out of this house now"¦ I mean it!" Danny Screamed.
"Come back to bed darling. It will feel better in the morning," Steph soothed.
Ben placed the frames back on the bedside stand and lay back down, pulling the covers around him and hugging into Steph. He settled himself down to sleep for the night, thinking now that this must be just what Danny would want for him, Happiness. Danny continued to scream. Always screamed, but just like before her screams went unnoticed. Always on deaf ears.
