Chapter 1!!
Spike was a normal school student with a lively personality, dark hair down to her waist, tall, bright eyes, you know, the things you would normally expect in a fifteen year old girl. She had pale ivory skin and wore baggy, black bondage trousers, a black jacket and a white combat top.
She was a Goth and was often picked on, but they always bullied her in groups, as she could be rather violent at times. She lived with her mother and stepfather since her real father was dead, but had she no knowledge how of he died. Her mother was her role model but her stepfather was often abusive and hit her. She constantly tried to tell her mother but was always the second priority because her stepfather had demanded so much of spikes mother that she began putting him before Spike.
It was an ordinary day at secondary school for spike and her friends.
The school day started as normal, she went to her homeroom and sat down on her seat, which was probably covered in gum underneath but she never dared to look. The register was taken as normal and being the informal girl that she was, accidentally said “hello!” instead of, “yes miss!” “Spike, why do you do that every day?” asked the teacher.
“I don’t mean it miss, I just say it,” Spike replied. The teacher gave a sort of grunting noise and walked off. Spike poked her tongue out at the teacher as her back was turned, and then the bell rang. Her next class was P.E, which she enjoyed as her best friends; Maria and Joey were in that class too. They met up at the hall, there were about twenty pupils in that class and it was hard to find people amongst the others. But luckily for Spike, she was the tallest in the year and was able to see above everyone else. Finally after about five minutes of searching, found her friends. As spike walked over to them, she got a sudden sharp pain in her head and everyone’s talking got louder. Holding her head in her hands, spike kept walking to Maria and Joey, “Hey Spike, you all right?” asked Maria. She nodded, and P.E commenced as always. They had basketball and, as normal, Spike would be chosen to go in the group away from Maria and Joey.
Although her team always won, Spike was never happy, she never had any fun since the new school year started. “Catch!” shouted daemon, one of the boys on her team. She turned around and the next thing she saw was a ball flying towards her. It hit her on the head and she fell back. She looked dazed for a moment then shook her head. She gave a slight giggle. She hadn’t realized that her hair tie had fallen out and her hair was flopping over her shoulders and drooping around her. When everyone saw that she was okay, they all began going into a fit of giggles with spike. She picked up her hair tie and put her hair back up in a ponytail.
In the changing rooms, Katie, one of the most popular and egotistical teenagers to walk the halls, went up to Spike. “Nice nose dive you ugly idiot” it was typical for someone like her to say that. Katie was almost perfect in how she looked, with shoulder length, wavy blonde hair, very well done make up, and her nose looked as if it had been given to her by a pixie. Spike narrowed her eyes and said, “be careful what you say Katie, or you might find yourself picking up those teeth of yours off of the floor\'\' A slight sneer was the last of that, and once again, the bell rang.
Through out the day, every time Spike was in a crowd, she got her headaches and the voices got louder. Soon, after what only seemed to be half a day, school ended.
The school bell rang and there was a stampede towards the busses. Spike, being caught up in the flurry, was trying to catch up with her friends, Maria and Joey. “Finally, I was worried I was going to get trampled by the raging beasts, I mean students,” said spike feeling very puffed out. She dusted herself off and carried on, “so what’s happened to you today?”
“Well Mr Johnson was a real cow again,” replied Joey. “I feel for your sanity” remarked spike laughing. Suddenly, Maria noticed their bus pulling away “Oh, look the bus is leaving!” they ran to the next stop, but as soon as they arrived, the bus pulled away again. Spike went after it but she tripped. “Crap!” cried Spike grabbing her ankle. Maria and Joey went straight to her.
“Hey, look at that crossing sign,” said Maria. They all looked up and saw that the green and red men on the sign were going red, green, and red, green. Spike hobbled over to the side and Maria started to giggle. “Shut up!” shouted Spike. Suddenly, the sign blew up and the green man was lying down on his back as if he were dead.
“I’m not sure that that’s supposed to happen… is it?” said Joey looking very puzzled.
“Um hello, injured person on the side here!” spike said sarcastically.
“Hey Spike, are you okay?” asked Joey
“I’m fine” said spike blushing.
“Yeah, that’s all hunky dory, but how are we going to get home?” Maria asked. They looked around for an answer. Joey spotted a pay phone near by. They went over and rung up Spikes mum, no answer.
“Okay, I’ll phone my mum,” said Joey. He finally got hold of her and asked for a lift home. “She said she’ll be here in about 30 minutes.” Maria and Joey helped Spike to a bench. Spike looked up and saw an ice-cream van. “Hey, look, there,” she said.
“I’ll get us something to drink,” said Maria. She walked off and at that moment spike heard foot steps. “Hey, Joey can you hear that?” said spike. “Hear what? I can’t hear anything apart from the wind,” replied Joey. Really, that’s weird because I’m sure I can hear someone running closer, spike thought to herself. And from the distance came a shadowy figure, as he came closer spike noticed that he was wearing a hooded cape and he looked old and tattered but from the speed he was running spike guessed he couldn’t be more than in his late thirties. He ran passed spike and Joey with such speed that it ruffled spikes hair. Maria was on her way back to her friends when she too noticed the man, he was coming right at her. His pace slowed as he came closer to her but he only went as slow as a fast jog. She move to the side of the pavement to let him pass. But again he slowed his pace to a slow jog.
As the man came to the side of Maria he took a quick glance at her and noticed her diamond necklace with a jade snake inside. He reached out to grab it a rip it off her neck but she dodged and dropped the drinks on the floor. Then next thing she did surprised everyone, she punched the man in the stomach and as he bent down holding his stomach, gave him the hardest kick she could to the back of the neck. He collapsed on the floor. “Take that!” shouted Maria obviously very pleased with herself. She turned her back and didn’t notice the man getting up to his feet. He grabbed her shoulder and she turned around. “What the…” Maria was astonished to see the man back on his feet looking as if nothing had happened. He pushed her to a wall and put one hand around her neck and one on the necklace, he ripped it off then with his free hand that was now off her neck, pulled out a penknife and slashed it at her right arm then her stomach. She fell to the floor and lay there motionless. “Maria!” shouted Joey.
Spike sat there from shock, tears began to fill her eyes, but she forced them away. It took a while for the sudden events to sink in She looked to the right then the left. She saw the capped man run away and spike felt a sudden anger and at the same moment a sudden flow of energy. She sprung to her feet forgetting her ankle and gave chase. He led her to an alley way. She slowed her pace feeling she wasn’t alone. “Hello?” she whispered. She found the necklace but the man was nowhere to be seen. Her ankle began to throb again but she still made her way back uneasy of the events and unsure if she was in reality. She once again broke into a run, her breathing heavy, her mind racing. She found Joey, sitting next to Maria, who was still lifeless on the floor. “I’ve checked her pulse, and she should be okay, at lease till the ambulance arrives,” said Joey, “I’ll keep a look out for it on the corner.” Tears began to roll down spikes cheeks.
“Don’t cry,” said Maria struggling put one hand on spikes shoulder, “I can’t feel anything and I’ll be okay”.
“Will you, are you sure?” whispered spike. Maria gave an assuring nod and said “here take this as a gift okay?” she handed spike the necklace then closed her eyes. A while later an ambulance arrived and the paramedics stepped out with a stretcher they wasted no time and got her straight into the ambulance, and within 5 minutes she was gone. Joey’s mum came in her Toyota and asked where Maria was. Joeys’ family was very wealthy, but Spike didn’t know how they got their money, his mother was single and she only worked in a convenience store. Joey explained everything about the accident and his mother was astounded. Spike kept quiet the whole journey to her house. She walked indoors with out a word, not even a goodbye. She went into the living room and sat down.
Meanwhile, up in the rather large area of space…
“Are you sure she’s the one?” said a mysterious character, looking at a monitor screen.
“Yes, most certainly, she is the one,” another assured her.
“Don’t underestimate her, she doesn’t know it yet but she does have a rather valuable gift,” the third one added.
“Okay but she doesn’t look ready yet I mean her friend has just been assaulted and is in hospital,”
“But we know who did it, for all we know this could be the best thing we can do for her,” said the third person.
“Well I don’t know…”
Back way, way, way, way down on earth, spike was sitting sulking on her sofa. She had been sitting there gazing at the necklace Maria gave her for half an hour. Pull your self together spike she told herself, she turned on the T.V and a news report had come on about a girl getting attacked by the street by a school. That has got to be about Maria spike thought. But it was about a child of 5 so it couldn’t be about Maria. She tried changed the channel but only got interference, “weird,” muttered Spike and turned it off. She went into the kitchen and got some water. She gulped it down and got another to take upstairs. As she entered her room and turned on the light, she noticed a letter on her bed.
Spike,
I’m sorry I’m not in but your stepfather has been taken into hospital. He collapsed in the living room today and I will be with him for a while. But don’t worry he’ll be alright. Dinner’s in the oven and aunt dawn has offered to take you in whist I’m away.
Love you always,
Love from Mum
“Why does this always happen to me!” shouted spike. “She doesn’t care about me at all!” A single tear rolled down her cheek, and she got up and kicked her pillow. Suddenly, all the lights in her house blew and because it was dusk the house wasn’t pitch black, but it was dark. “I need someone to talk too, maybe I should ring Joey, and he’s always good with this kind of stuff.” She picked up the phone and literally, punched in his number; she put the phone to her ear, but got static. “For god sake!” a split second after that, the phone line short circuited. “I wish I could just fly away!” yelled Spike. This time, really in tears, she went back in her room. Something is wrong with me I must be cursed, all the casualty’s and all of the strange explosions man this day sucks big time. She flopped herself face down on her bed and drifted in and out of sleep.
