Chapter 1:

~*~*~*~*~

Consciousness came swimming back to me slowly, as though a black cloud were being lifted. Opening my eyes, I was blinded by a harsh light being shined directly at me.

“Miss, are you alright?” Someone seemed to be trying to rouse me, but I didn’t recognize the voice.

“Mmmmmm…Get that light out of my eyes.” I tried to raise my hands to my face and realized that they were encased in iron cuffs and chained to the floor. I also realized that I had no memory of the past few days.

“Ma’am, I need you to relax and tell me your name.” He said gently, I guess because I started to panic and struggle against the chains. “I’m Officer Mark Bradford and I’m here to help you.”

“I’m Evelyn.” I said while trying to look past the light and at the person I was speaking with. He still had the flashlight shining in my eyes. It was really getting on my nerves. “Will you please get that damn light out of my face? Now?!”

“Uh…Yeah. Sorry.” He mumbled, as though a bit embarrassed. But he turned off the light all the same. I closed my eyes a second and shook my head, then stopped quickly as nausea set in and bile threatened to come up. A splitting headache seemed to have developed while I was unconscious. I tried to move, to get more comfortable on the hard cold stone I was sitting on, but my right leg screamed in pain. I drew in a sharp breath and closed my eyes tightly. Something must have shown because Officer Bradford was suddenly right beside me.

“Evelyn, are you alright?” He touched my shoulder lightly, as though he was afraid to hurt me.

“Yeah I’m alright. But I think something happened to my right leg.” I replied quietly and gritted my teeth as a spasm of pain, as electrifying as lightening, ran up my leg and side. It felt like someone had taken a knife and decided to see just how many times they could stab me before I bled. The only problem was that I didn’t have time bleed. “Just get me out of these chains and tell me where I am.”

“You’re in Deadwood, South Dakota, and we don’t know how you got here. If you have an recollection as to what may have happened, it would help us out a great deal.”

Why did it seem to me that this guy was refusing to help get out of these shackles and chains?

“Let me loose and I’ll tell you what I know.” I retorted in a cool calm voice, denying the fact that my tone held a heated warning. I glanced up and my normal mid-night blue eyes melted into the color of moonlight with an edging of red, identical to liquid silver mixed with fresh blood. My number one rule was: Never show or tell someone what you are until it’s absolutely necessary or unless you’re planning to kill that person afterwards.

Officer Bradford gasped and took a few quick steps back. I heard the heavy clashing sound of metal hitting stone and the thump of something softer. I took a guess and figured that he had dropped the flashlight in shock and terror and fell.

“What the hell are you?!” He whispered, as though he figured yelling would trigger something.

“Officer Bradford, I would like you to somehow get me out of these chains.” My voice was as smooth as chocolate, but as cold as ice. My night vision was also returning. I was right; he had fallen when he tried to get away from me. He shivered at my command then started to crawl towards me, slowly, as if in a daze.

A shaft of light suddenly split through the darkness and blinded me once again. My mind control on Bradford was lost as my concentration was broken. Once again, a flashlight was shined in my face. Damn it, what can’t I ever escape the limelight? I closed my eyes and allowed them to return to normal while letting go of the power I had gathered.

“Bradford, what the hell are you doing? Get up off the ground and do your job. Stop messing around with the poor girl.” I glanced up to see who had spoken and saw the golden glint of a star. This must be the guy in charge I thought to myself. He was a tall, lean man with a severely chiseled face and defined characteristics; or as far as I could see, given the lighting and the fact that the front of his body was thrown into shadows by standing in front of the doorway. They had already ruined my night vision for the second time in one night. They weren’t going to get a second chance.

I suddenly grinned and decided to play the sweet, innocent, poor little girl that the sheriff suspected me to be in the beginning. It might just help me get out of here, but if it didn’t, at least I would have a little fun messing around with their heads a bit. Glancing up at the Sheriff, I smiled faintly, as though it took a lot of effort to do, and made a small pitiful sound at the back of my throat.

“Officer, could you please help me get out of these chains? Something is wrong with my leg and I have a splitting headache.” I said as politely as I could while still sounding like a little girl. Only half of it was true though. It seemed as though my leg had healed in record time, which isn’t surprising seeing as I could have healed a broken bone in the matter of two days. Small pains like this were no big deal; a sprain was nothing. Looking up, I noticed the Sheriffs eyes roam over my body. Maybe he didn’t think I was just a little girl after all. Well, his staring problem could easily be fixed later.

Officer Bradford got up slowly and shook himself. He looked like he had just woken up and stepped back into reality. I couldn’t blame him. I worked for years trying to prefect my power of mind control. It wasn’t as easy as it sounds. Gazing up at him playfully, I smiled sweetly and tilted my head to the side slightly while allowing the scars of the side of my neck show. I saw his eyes widen in fright and he took a step back. If I didn’t know any better, I’d say he was afraid of this poor innocent girl.

“Officer Bradford, are you going to help me? Or should I ask Mr. …” I left the end of my sentence dangling so the sheriff had the opportunity to fill in his name.

“Sergeant Ryan Davis.” He said.

“Thank you. Are you going to help, or should I ask Sergeant Davis to help me?” I glanced up at Bradford and read his facial expression. He was scared to death. It looked as though he had just stepped out of the seventh circle of hell and was remembering it piece by piece all over again. Now who would have thought an innocent girl like myself would provoke such terror in a big tough officer like Bradford. I suppose I had to give him more credit than I had originally handed him for at least having the brains to be afraid.

“No…no, I’ll help you.” He said while taking a few steps towards me once more, though he seemed to be much more cautious this time. He kneeled down and began looking at the shackles. I took the opportunity to look up at Sergeant Davis and caught him staring at me. Wonder if I have to fix his staring problem sooner than I thought…I said to myself while frowning.

Suddenly, an idea dawned on me. I took a deep cleansing breath and calmed my nerves to the point where I felt empty. While looking up at Davis, I allowed my eyes to bleed once more into the color of moonlight and blood and willed him to listen to me. I was able to connect my mind to his, to meld my power to his humanity. Silently, I spoke to him without really saying words.

“Davis, I want you tell all of the police to leave the area immediately. Afterwards you will tell Officer Bradford to cut the chains that’s trapping my arms.” He nodded dimly as though he were swooning. “Once everyone is gone, I’m going to walk out of here quietly and no one will question me; you won’t remember anything after I step outside, understand?” I added in after a second and he nodded slowly twice before turning around to the door as though in slow motion.

I could hear him telling the squad cars to leave the premises at once. Bradford glanced at Sergeant Davis first, then at me. It was lucky that he looked at Davis first. If he hadn\'t, he would have caught the same other worldliness once again. When I looked at Bradford, everything about my face was normal, or as close to normal as possible. I knew that my pupils had shrunk down to the size of pinpoints, but in the dark, Officer Bradford would never notice.

“Are you able to get these things off of me, or aren’t you?” I asked in a weary voice while bowing my head forward.

“Yeah, just give me a second.” He said while taking a key ring off of his belt. Holding it up to the light, he finally found what I supposed was the right key. Leaning down, it slipped into the cuffs smoothly. Bradford turned it slowly to the side while glancing up at me and grinning. He sure did love taking his damn time. I finally heard the lock click and the crash of metal against stone as the cuffs fell and hit the ground.

I didn’t stand up automatically, but shifted to the side to face Bradford. Smiling innocently, I stood up on my knees and crawled slowly towards him. Putting my faced within inches of his, I licked my lips while reaching my hand up and placing it against his neck. Bradford froze at my touch like he had been bitten by a Cobra. Not a bad analogy.

“W-what do you want?” He stammered. Fear seems to have that effect on people.

“You’re an understanding man, aren’t you? I’d like you to leave Sergeant Davis and myself alone so we may talk. Is that possible?”

“Um, boss?”

Sergeant Davis had returned while Bradford was undoing the shackles. I glanced up and gave him a meaningful look. Sergeant Davis merely nodded then started to head down the steps one at a time.

“Yeah, I’ll take it from here Bradford. Just got home for the night…there isn’t anything else for you to do. The rest of the team has already left.” Davis said while looking down at us. He offered his hand to help Bradford up, but the officer just ignored it and got up on his own. He seemed to be a little pissed off, but wasn’t about to show it to his superior. He just nodded and strode towards the steps quickly then slipped out of the door like an angry storm trailing off into the distance.

Turning to Sergeant Davis, I smiled sweetly and bowed my head then took a small step towards him. Time for the show to begin, I thought to myself. He smiled like a Cheshire cat and traced his fingertips lightly down the edge of my jaw.

“You truly are one beautiful woman. Even if you have been through a great ordeal.” He said, as though this was supposed to flatter me.

“Thank you for helping me Sergeant Davis. I honestly do appreciate it.” I replied sweetly and continued to look up at him like I was expecting something.

“It’s no problem. I’m happy to have been helpful…and you may call me Ryan.” He said softly in a whisper and leaned towards me slowly. His right hand’s fingers slipped under my chin and tilted my head back. I reached up and touched both of my hands gently to the sides of his face as his lips brushed mine softly in a kiss. He opened his mouth and attempted to slip his tongue inside while placing his opposite hand on the back of my head to keep me in place. I wouldn’t allow it.

As soon as he tried to become friendlier, I touched my thumbs lightly to either of his eyes, and then plunged them in. I pushed in until I felt the soft orbs pop under the pressure and a smooth, liquid mess spilled down his face.

He reared back screaming and pushed me away as his hands flew to his ruined eyes. I took a step up to him once more and wrapped my right hand around his throat tightly and tilted my head to the side. I jerked him against my body, despite the bloody mess his face had become.

“You ruined your chance when you looked at me, now you won’t get a second try to insult a girl.” I said nastily in a growling tone before digging my fingers into his flesh and tearing his throat out. He gasped and the thick wet sound of blood hitting the floor filled the room. He fell to the ground and scratched at the stone before finally becoming motionless. Blood and thicker things surrounded his body in a red puddle.

I bent down and wiped my hands on his shirt, trying to get all the blood off of my hands. Even though I knew the only way to get it out from under my nails was to really scrub them or get a manicure. Shaking my head, I turned away and headed for the stairs. I turned back once and looked at what I did as an evil and wicked grin played along my lips. Good riddance to bad rubbish I thought while walking up the steps. I slipped through the door and out into the fading light, leaving the sweet metallic scent of blood behind.
