Orlando laughed with his friends as they had a beer and he shook his head slowly, “You guys are amazing, there is no way you two could get that guy to do that. No way.” He stated with a cackle.
“Hey Orli, got another admirer it seems,” Lawrence said cocking his head to the bar where an older man was checking out on their table, looking particularly in his friend’s direction. “You’ve done better mate,” he joked noticing the one checking his friend out today was an overweight man and had a hideously short haircut.
Raising his eyes towards the bar as Lawrence talked to him, Orlando noticed the other man returning his eyes to the bottle of beer he was holding in his hand before staring ahead again.
“Bet you could get him at your feet in no time.”
“No way man, not falling for that.” Orlando shook his head and reached for his own beer to take a pull of it.
Lawrence looked back at the bar to the man who was now mindingly staring away and grinned “Come on Orli, amuse us, it’s a boring night. I dare you to go out with him, not fuck him because god, I wouldn’t be so mean as to ask you that, but just ask him for a date, some charity to lighten up some loser’s day.”
“No, I don’t get involved in that sort of thing, and you know I won’t do it so stop it.”
Rolling his eyes Lawrence poked his tongue out at Orlando. Jason and Justin laughed from the other side of the table before they started looking towards the bar as well having caught up with the conversation.
“Ewww, fashion emergency could not do a thing with that guy.” Justin said with a wrinkle of his nose.
“Can we move on to another subject?” Orlando asked knowing just how loud his friends could be and shook his head as they continued to comment on the disfavorable look of the stranger. “Alright, I’ll go get another beer until you tire of getting some stranger’s skin out with no reason at all.” He said and headed towards the bar to see the stranger standing up as soon as his friends screamed to him to go get it and exit the place after leaving some money on the wooden counter.
Shaking his head Orlando got to the bar to get a stare from the barman and inwardly sighed, he was getting tired of having to pay for his friend’s deeds, he always got labeled in the same bag.
Muttering a ´thanks´ to the barman who just nodded at him as he got the money Orlando returned to the table, his walking accompanied by the loud teasing comments of his ´friends´
“Shut up,” he muttered as he plunked down on the chair again and heard the roar of laugher as they started to tease him about having scared the stranger away.
“Hang on; don’t tell me you did like him! Now that would be a first of firsts!”
“Lawrence, honestly mate, think you had more beers than you can handle, just chill.” The British man said pining at the slightly younger man with his dark brown eyes which it seemed to have some sort of effect as the other just looked back at him.
“We were only having fun Orli.”
“Yeah, well, remember the days the boys in school picked on you because you were queer, or the people who still do. Just, stop making fun of other people, besides it not being right, you’ll get us in trouble. Not all walk out you know.”
“Yeah, they do,” Lawrence said with a nod, “guys like that one just go away. But alright, I will behave if it upsets you so much.”
“Thanks.” Orlando muttered, somehow his night now entirely ruined as he felt the disapproving eyes of the rest of the pub on the young and loud group of Brits who were being more than noticeable that night. He should just have stayed home.

Rolling in his bed Eric blinked as the sun hit his eyes from the open blinds of the window and shifted in his place. He was still dead tired, as if a truck had run over him and he sighed softly.
Shifting to the other side to try to avoid the clear light of the sun, he groaned as the trapped erection within his boxers rubbed against the mattress. He still couldn’t think of the guy he had seen the night before, he still couldn’t stop thinking of how this stranger’s friends had laughed at him when they had caught him checking the glossy curly haired man up.
He was gorgeous, and right at this moment, there was nothing this man would want with him. Before, Eric would have had no lack in confidence at all in making a move with this gorgeous man, ask him to have a beer, or even use his comedian side to try getting him to laugh. But with 30 pounds over his average weight and a shaved head, his confidence was not as good as it was meant to be. Not near as good as it was before the whole project started.
Luckily it was meant not to last long.
Eric was more than aware that this was one of the things he taught his own kids, not to judge people by the way they look, but he also knew people, at least the ones that did not know him from earlier times, did act weird around him.
Reaching over for the ringing phone, he answered it, and smiled when he heard where the call was from. Nodding to himself he said the girl on the other side that he was interested, that he would go to the shelter probably near noon.
Dialing home, well… Rebecca’s home now; he waited for her to pick up.
“Hi Bec,” he said, his voice probably blank as she picked up. “I got a call from the shelter just now; I was wondering if it would be ok for me to pick up Sophia before Klaus got out from kiddy school? And … yeah, yes still gonna get them the dog. I know you’re allergic. Look Bec, it will be their dog and it will stay at my place. You don’t have to see it or anything. No I won’t ask you to feed it when I’m away, Bec.” He stopped her short. “I can handle it. Can I pick the kids up today? I will get them home by 6 since it’s a school day and I’ll do Klaus’s homework with him so that will be done too. Would that work?” He asked almost able to hear her think and consider on the other side of the phone before she agreed.
“Alright, thanks. I will pick Sophia up in an hour and we’ll go get Klaus. OK, see you then.” He said pressing the ´talk´ button again to hang up before he groaned as his boxers brushed the trapped flesh within them.
Standing up almost angrily, he headed for the shower and discarding his boxers, he stepped inside letting the cold water hit on his entire body before it started to heat up. That was good. Cold water never seemed to fail. He sighed whilst reaching for the shampoo to start on his hair.

“I want it to be big and black and cuddly! Like Stitch!” Klaus said clinging to his father’s hand while watching up as Eric carried Sophia, and he wondered why he couldn’t be carried too.
Eric laughed and looked down. “Stitch was not black, and was not big either.” He chuckled.
“Dad, there are no purple dogs,” Klaus said matter of factly. “If we see one, it would be an alien experiment.” He said with difficulty at the last words and smiled when his dad laughed again. It was good to see him laugh. He was sad most the times lately, even if he tried to hide it, Klaus still knew.
“Well, if we do see a purple one we’ll take it, the alien experiment 626 ended up being a pretty good companion didn’t he?” Eric chuckled and held the door open for Klaus to go through before he followed and held Klaus´ hand instantly when his son reached up for it again.
Having gone through all paperwork at the main desk they were shown to the nursery when the recently arrived puppies were.
A grin grew to adorn Eric’s lips as he felt Klaus let go and hurry towards the bunch of puppies before Sophia noticed them too and pointed out frantically at them. “Let’s go get a better look.” He said kissing her hand and moved to where Klaus was peering over a playpen which held a cushion and a bunch of puppies playing inside.
“I want that one!” Klaus said pointing to the honeyed colored puppy which approached to the side where he was standing to sniff him. “This one daddy.” He said looking up.
Eric smiled at the assistant that had showed them there, she had started to explain about the different characteristics they had noticed in the puppies before Klaus stated he had chosen already.
“That one is indeed the one that seems to be the most social one.” She giggled and picked the pup up. Crouching before the little boy she let him pet it, noticing she didn’t have to remind him to be gentle with it.
Crouching too, Eric let Sophia pet it too and his smile widened when she giggled in delight. “You sure this is the one?” He asked looking at the rest of the puppies playing around in the playpen filled with different toys.
“Yesyesyes! I want this one!” Klaus bounced holding his arms out for the woman to let him hold the one that would be his puppy, which she did after his dad nodded at her.
“That was easier than I thought.” Eric confessed with a grin, watching his son holding the dog as carefully as he could not to let him fall and giggle when the puppy licked his face. “Well, as easy as it can be to leave the rest here.”
“All our puppies receive a good home, none will last more than a couple of days here. Especially being this young.” She assured with a warm smile.
“Alright then, are you very sure this is the right one? Because once we take him home, then he’ll be part of our family. And will be with us for a very long time.”
“I know, I will have to change his water and help with the food.” Klaus nodded. “Chris…top…her wants to come home.” He beamed at his dad and held the puppy close to his sister who was reaching out to it.
“Christopher?” Eric said standing up whilst looking down at the girl who was trying to retrieve the puppy. “What about something shorter? Chris?” he offered when Klaus shock his head strongly.
“We’re taking him,” Klaus said holding onto it when the girl bent to get the puppy back.
“Of course you are, I was only going to carry him for you to the waiting room, you see, every puppy has to see to the doctor first, before leaving the refuge. Just to make sure they aren´t sick when they leave. Otherwise you would have to come back the next day if they were.”
Klaus nodded slowly, “Alright, but he’s still mine if he’s sick.” He stated.
“And your sister’s.” Eric reminded, “Alright. Let’s go see the vet now so he can tell us how healthy and big our pup is going to grow.”
“Can I carry him?”
Looking at the girl who had accompany them to pick the dog Eric nodded when she did so, “make sure to hold him tight,” he said as Klaus started to make his way back towards the door they had come in. “Doctor dad, so we can take Chris-Christo-pher- home.”
Following to the assistant to the waiting room, Eric sat on a chair after having helped Sophia to one, and then Klaus, who amazingly willingly handed the dog to his sister whilst reminding her not to drop it.
“I was thinking about the name, I think it should be something shorter.” Eric said looking at the determined look on his son’s eyes. “Short like Klaus or Sophia, so we can learn how to write it soon, what about… Ian? Or Sasha?”
Frowning deeply Klaus looked from the puppy to his dad. “I like Sasha.” He said slowly still considering.
“Bana.” A voice called from not far away and picking up both Sophia and the puppy up, Eric made sure Klaus was by his side, when his eyes rose he almost froze in place as the same gorgeous man that had been at the pub waited for them to approach.
“Mr. Bana?” Orlando asked recognizing the unmistakable man from the night before and held his hand out for the other to shake it when the other nodded. “Please, follow me.” He said leading the way back to the examining room knowing there was nothing he could say or do to apologize for his friend’s behavior nor it was the place or time to do it either.
“We got a puppy,” Klaus said to the man dressed in green pants with a nice jacket that had a lot of puppies and kitties on it.
“Did you want a puppy for a long time? Or is it a special occasion?” Orlando smiled down at the little boy who seemed eager to talk. He could easily tell which were shy and which took active interest in their pets now. It always showed.
“Dad said we could have a pet when he settled at his new place. Mom is allergic to the fur and she doesn’t let us have any except a gold fish, but it’s boring. It doesn’t do anything fun.”
“Fishes are very delicate creatures, and they are not really meant to be fun. But if you are ever nervous about something, you can always sit and watch them for a while and you will see you feel much, much better in no time.”
“Is that because they are so pretty isn’t it?”
“In a way; yes. Their colors tend to be very pretty.” Orlando nodded with a smile. “Have you considered a name for the new addition to the family?” He asked looking from father to son whilst reaching for a pen in the front pocket of his jacket.
“Sasha.” Klaus said knowing his dad liked that name.
Looking for confirmation with the other man Orlando wrote it down before he filled in some of the boxes from the form before reaching out for the dog. “Where will he be living? House? Apartment?”
“House,” Eric said before his son could again reply for him and re-arranged Sophia on his hip. “With a backyard, so he will have plenty of space.”
Nodding Orlando looked up as he took in the info he had being ´told´ by the little boy mostly. A let’s try keep the kids focus on something else besides a divorce case coming to mind.
Reaching for the puppy Orlando started to ran the basic usual examination. “Make sure Sasha does not eat grass, plants, pebbles, or poo from any possible cat that might have marked the territory before or lives near. What I always recommend is to keep a dry food based diet with dogs. A personal favorite is Eukanuba, that brand covers all vitamins and nutrition’s a dog needs in all different phases of his life. It helps keep them healthy providing all nutrients they need, and last but not less important it prevent us from cooking for them,” he smiled at Eric before he reached for the thermometer. “He might cry a little, but this does not hurt, it feels only a little odd for him.” He assured the little boy who was clinging to the examination table before he pushed the thermometer in, causing Sasha to wiggle and whine.
“What is that?” Klaus asked before Eric could open his mouth.
“This is a thermometer, I’m checking if Sasha has a temperature as that would let us know if something is wrong with him.” He explained.
“So a dry food based life would be alright for him?” Eric asked having not had dogs since he was little, and back then all they got was either the rest of dinner or rice and meat.
“He will be perfectly healthy and happy with a dry food based life. You can give him meat or ´snacks´ from time to time. But I would not recommend replacing them for the food itself for two reasons. First it would unbalance the diet, and second Sasha might never want to try his dry food again if you do. Especially at this stage of his life.” Orlando checked the thermometer and cleaning it put it back into place. “Can you hold him a little?” he asked the other man who nodded reaching a hand to hold the dog into place while Orlando moved around the small room to look in the fridge for the vaccine and the syringe and needle.
“He’ll not like that.” Klaus stated looking at the needle and the doctor.
“He will not even notice it.” Orlando assured with a wink at the little boy before he applied the shot; the puppy indeed clueless as to what had happened.
“Wow.” Klaus said amazed. “Can he give me him my next shot if I need more?”
Eric could not help but chuckle at his son and looked up at the other man who was smiling warmly also amused. “He will probably be able to catch you if you start running around the room like you did with the last nurse.”
Orlando laughed softly and smiled at Klaus, “Think of Sasha next time, things might not be pleasurable but even if we don’t like them they are still good for us.” He explained moving to the bench with the drawers to get a small machine.
Looking at the younger man Eric wondered how he had seemed to be so … clueless at the pub when here he was now putting up with Klaus´ every question.
“I need another address besides the one that you gave me and another phone. The idea is that if you move, and Sasha gets lost, they will still be able to reach you at one of the phones or addresses.” He explained and entered the info the other man gave him. “He might complain a little again,” he said to the boy who was watching his every move and when Klaus nodded he inserted the microchip under the puppy’s skin and made sure it read correctly.
“And this is about it,” he smiled to the new owners and lowered the puppy when Klaus reached up eager to hold it. “All you have to do now is love him a lot and remember that sometimes he will not understand what you are saying because he is still very little.” He said ruffling the boy’s hair who was too enthralled with the puppy to even glance up.
“Let me show you to the entrance where we will finish the adoption procedures.” He said and they were all soon in the main counter. After talking with Julie for a couple of minutes, Orlando got the small collar with the leash and crouched before Klaus to put it around Sasha´s neck. “Oh, preferably he is not to go outside until he has all his vaccines. By outside I mean the street, as diseases transmit by fluids left by other animals in the floor, grass, walls trees etcetera.”
“He will remain inside ´till then.” Eric nodded to the veterinarian who smiled at him and Eric felt his knees weaken a little at the beautifully blinding smile.
Reaching inside his pocket again, Orlando got a pen and signed the certificate for the vaccine he had applied and stamped the sticker of the vaccine in the right place. He reached inside his pocket again where the prescriptions had the header with the addresses he could be found and the phone numbers.
“This is the vaccination plan; you can either come to the shelter when Sasha needs one, or to one of the pet-shops written here. This one,” he marked the address, “is the one I’m on daily from one to eight pm, here I’m Tuesdays and Thursdays from seven to twelve thirty if there is anything you need or any doubts left. My phone numbers are also marked in case there is an emergency, considering I know him already, until you find another veterinarian or if you decide to find someone that lives closer to home or that was recommended.” He said looking at the taller man to see if he had any doubts.
“What do I do if he cries at night?” Eric asked.
“You put this toy,” Orlando reached inside the bag “with him when you settle him to sleep, it will ´fill in´ in a way the space his brothers and sisters did. If he still cries, and does so for over ten minutes go re-assure him everything is ok. Pet him and hold him a little if he falls asleep you can leave him in his resting place again unless you are tempted to hold him through the night. It is very common with ´first time´ parents.” He said. “I do not recommend holding him often while he sleeps, because otherwise he will get used to it and whine just to be picked up.”
“I know about that.” Eric said with a chuckle and a nod.
“Thought you might,” Orlando said smiling back before he stroke the little girl’s back gently.
Looking at Orlando, as the receipt said this man was named Eric reached out a hand to shake the other’s thanking him for the attention before he reached for the starter’s bag which contained food and a plastic bowl.
“A third measure of that cup three times a day.” Orlando said as Eric turned back to him.
“You’re good.” Eric chuckled as the other man guessed and asserted on what had come up to mind. “Thank you again.”
“A pleasure, any other doubts call me and I’ll see what I can do.”
Nodding again Eric smiled warmly at Orlando before he held the door open for Klaus to exit the place and headed back to the door, as Eric watched that the dog was being held properly.
Climbing into the car he helped his son to his chair, fastening the belt, before he handed Sasha over again giving Klaus some instructions before he moved to the other side to put Sophia into her own chair.
There was still something that didn’t ´click´ on his mind. The man he had seen today didn’t seem to match the one he had seen the other time at the pub. Perhaps Orlando was just doing his job now, and that implied being courteous though Eric’s instincts told him otherwise. He had seemed nice by nature, and it took special people to work with either animals or children…
Of course there was the identical evil twin theory but he doubted God would have made two perfect looking creatures with the same mold. Somehow it seemed a sin there would be more than one such good looking man such as Sasha´s vet.
“Dad?” Klaus asked noticing his father brooding and beamed when Eric turned to look back at him after fastening the seat belt from the driver’s side. “Sasha wants to go home.” He said pointing to the sleeping puppy. “Babies need their nap time.” He reminded and grinned as his dad smiled and nodded, before they headed off home again. Or his dad’s home of late.
“Orlando?” The nurse called out as he saw the youngest of their crew staring at the door.
“Yes Susie?” He asked turning around swiftly to smile at the woman behind the counter. “Anyone else I need to see before I flee to the pet shop?”
“There would be, but if you did, you would be late again.” Susie smiled. “Go get your stuff ready and I will have Mark check on them.”
“Alright Susie, I know when to take the hint when someone doesn’t want me around,” he winked at the nurse.
“Oh, yes, because I would certainly fight you off with a stick if I had to put up with you more than I do.” She joked making the vet chuckle and smiled when Orlando leaned over the counter to kiss her cheek.
“I’ll go get my stuff and I’m out of here, I’ll see you on Thursday, and do keep the place in order for me would you? We would all be lost with out you keeping an eye on all of us.”
“Sweet talker, go on, that might make me try save the chocolate covered croissants for you on Thursdays, oh wait. I already do!” She smiled.
“Either I’m too good, or you’re too nice.” Orlando winked with a grin and waving to her he headed off to pick up his stuff before he headed to the car waving to the ones who wished him a good day.
Unlocking it, he wondered if Eric, yes that was the other man’s name. If Eric had recognized him from the pub, he hadn’t seemed to, but then, he was with his kids. It was not like he could say; I want another vet to check on the dog because I had a problem with this man… Orlando sighed, even if it had being an indirect one.
Shaking the ideas from his mind Orlando decided to apologize the next time if he had a chance at all, that was of course if Eric didn’t decide to find another veterinarian for his new dog, which was the most probable thing by this point.
Starting the car he headed to the pet-shop going through the activities he had through the day, two surgeries at night, and after that, two home visits; another long day.
