Living in Suburbia

My life is not normal, no matter how you would like to look at it. Ok, if you really look at my life in most aspects, then I guess it is pretty normal. I mean I’m a 17-year-old girl who hates her mother’s stupidity and her father’s nonexistence in her life. Not only that, I’m kinda a social outcast and my social circle is made up of just Fiona and myself. So, I guess my life is pretty normal after all. Kinda sucks, I wouldn’t mind some un-normalness.

Ok, well here is day one in my journal. I won’t likely keep this up so, too bad for anyone who cares to read it.

“Cate! Dinner!” Cate closed her black and pink plaid journal and walked downstairs into the dinning room.

“Cate, you were suppose to change. Your dear Uncle Hank is here; you should want to look nice for him.” Uncle Hank, the uncle of no relation other than her mothers’ boyfriend and fathers best friend, how suburban could they get? Plus, was it all the bad to be wearing a black t-shirt and a pair of plain blue jeans?

“Sorry, forgot.” Cate sat down across from her ‘uncle’.

“Oh Liz, it’s all right. Cate looks beautiful in anything, just like her mother.” Hank smiled up at Liz as she sat down a basket of rolls next to him before sitting down in her own chair blushing.

“Hank, you are a charmer. Shall we say grace?” Liz held out her hands to her daughter and boyfriend. Was it a trend to be sacrilegious in suburbia?

“You can but I believe in Zankee. He’s my god from the planet Dorant.” Cate loved it when her mother pasted on her shocked look. “I’m joking. Hank, wanna say grace?” Cate smiled and grabbed her mothers’ hand.

“Sure. Liz, kids today are full of so many surprises just to make us ‘oldies’ laugh!” Hank smiled his fake porcelain teeth and gently rubbed Liz’s hand to clam her down.

“Yes, yes they are. Hank would you do the honor?” She smiled at Hank then once he closed his eyes she quickly glared over at Cate. Cate just rolled her eyes and mouthed ’does daddy know?’ at her mother. Liz quickly shut her eyes as Hank finished saying grace.

“There, now we can dig into this amazing looking feast.” Hank took his cloth napkin and tucked it into his collar; the cloth napkins were the ones Liz only use for holidays; guess their relationship must be heating up.

“Actually, as much as I would love to sit here and eat this dead cow with you both. I have someplace else to be.” Cate stood up from the table.

“Where else do you have to be Caitlin?” Her mother shot her a glare, for the second time that night.

“Not here. Bye.” Cate flashed a fake smile at Hank and her mother then walked over to the front door and left. Cate walked up and down her block, not really knowing where to hang out till her mother left to go help Hank ‘clean’ his small one bedroom apartment. Finally, not really caring where she went, Cate walked to the beach to wait out the affair her mother and Hank where playing around with, for 7 years. After walking around for a few minutes Cate sat down under a tree looking over the sand at the waves. “Does it hurt you?” Looking at the sand constantly getting hit by the water, she wondered if the sand was hurting. Always being there, but never part of the scene really. Just there to make it real, complete. Kinda like that second size of spoons that are there to make it enhanced, but not really needed.

“Does what hurt?”
Cate lifted her head off from her knees and looked around. She could have sworn she heard someone speaking. Then, she whipped her head as she heard someone jump down from the tree. Cate jolted upright and backed away from the guy who jumped down from the tree.

“I asked what hurt you?” The man said softly, watching Cate closely. “Is something wrong?”

“A man just jumped out of a tree almost on top of me and scared the hell out of me! That’s what wrong!” Cate started panted after her rant.

“Emotional.” Cate twirled around and saw another boy leaned up against the next closest tree.

“Who the fuck are you two?” Cate stood boxed in by the two boys, trying to keep her eyes on each.

“I’m Ryan. This is Brennan.” The first boy lifted his hand signaling that the other one was Brennan.

“Oh, what do you want from me?”

“Nothing from the likes of you. Move on.” Brennan walked away from the two.

“Don’t take his words to heart. He is... moody, as you would say.” Cate looked over to where Brennan walked to and saw him looking around, as if he was expecting something. Then he turned his eyes on Cate, watching her watch him. Cate then took her graze from Brennan and looked at the ground.

“Why are you here at so late at night?” Cate looked up at Ryan.

“We are here for... work.” Ryan coughed a bit then looked around. What were they both looking for?

“Work? What kind of work? You look the same age as I am.”

“How old are you?” Ryan still hadn’t returned to look at her, instead his eyes were locked in on the sky.

“Seventeen.”

“That’s nice.” Ryan then quickly turned around and looked for Brennan. “Where is he?”

“Oh, Brennan?”

“Yes.”

“I saw him over there. I can go get him if you want me too.”

“Yes, that would speed things along. Thank you.” Cate walked away from Ryan and over to where Brennan was sitting. Sure she was scared at first but these guy where very odd and enticing.

“I have no use for you. Go away.” Brennan turned and looked away from Cate again.

“You are such an asshole. Look, your friend wants you over there, tell him bye for me. At least he was nice.” Cate started to walk away before Brennan grabbed her arm to stop her from walking any further.

“How dare you call me that!?”

“First, let go.” Cate yanked her arm away from him. “And second, let me guess no one has ever called you that before, have they?”

“No one would dare too.” Brennan crossed his arms and straightened his position to prove his superiority to Cate.

“Well, then let me say, I’m very happy to be the first person to call you an asshole!” Cate walked away from Brennan. Leaving him a little stunned, but that’s part of the fun of being a bitch.

Anyways, Cate decided to go home thinking that her mother and Hank must of left by now. Cate dug into her back pocket looking for a stick of gum to occupy her on her walk home. Once she found it she pulled it out and her green beaded bracelet accidentally slid off her wrist.

“Great.” Cate looked down and searched for her bracelet. Finally, after not finding it and Cate looked up, ready to stand, until she saw what she was facing. Ryan and Brennan where standing in front of a dark glossy blue almost black creature, it almost looked human besides its color and the shape of it. It looked like an alien; it was an alien. “Alien.” Cate whispered to herself.

Just then Ryan turned to look around, he had heard Cate say something; something like the word alien.

“Go.” Brennan said as he continued his mind link with the visitor, knowing Ryan had heard the same thing as he had.

Ryan left Brennan and went to find Cate. “Cate? Cate, where are you?” Once, Ryan heard her shallow breathing he knew he had found her. Cate was sitting behind a tree crying. “Cate, everything will be fine. I swear by it. But what you saw, you never can speak of it with another human.”

Cate looked up at Ryan and her eyes went wide; Ryan had a tiny star shimmering in the middle of his forehead. “Get away from me!” Cate shot up and started to run someplace, anyplace, as long as it was far away from this place.

“Why must humans be overemotional and unreasonable?” Ryan said to himself.

‘Stop wasting time; find her.’ Ryan nodded in response to Brennan’s mind link message and ran off towards the direction Cate had disappeared to.

“Running, such an earthly invention.” He said with ease as he chased after her. After a bit he caught up with a tired and breathless Cate. “Please stop running Cate.” He said as she stopped running next to Cate, who was bent over panting.

“Stay.... away...from me!” The words came heaving out of her mouth as she backed away slowly from him.

“Cate, please just listen to me. Listen to me as Ryan, not an alien. Please.”

Cate knew if she ran she would most likely have to stop again soon and then Ryan, the alien, would know where she lived. This seemed like the better option as of right now.

“You.... have 3 minutes.” Cate leaned up against a tree and kept her eyes on him.

“Well, what you saw was Brennan talking to another alien about some galaxy trade routes. Brennan and I are aliens as you can guess from my mark. Do you understand this?”

“I understand it fine. Just fine. You and Brennan are aliens and you have a star shining off your forehead. What are you doing here? On... earth I mean?”

“That is really Brennan‘s fault, not mine. My symbol, the star, it is the star of Tyke. It represents that I am Brennan’s watcher, babysitter if you will. Brennan is... royalty, as you would say. His father put him on a timeout, as you might say here.”

“Wait, so you are saying that that jackass is an alien prince and you are watching him while he is grounded here on my planet?”

“That is correct.” Ryan smiled happily that Cate was understanding this and not fainting.

“What, who was that....” Cate made a hand motion towards where Brennan and the bluish black alien were still talking.

“Oh, that was Foo-ut. He is the king of Hargar-tu. He is here with business for the prince.”

“Trade routes.” Ryan nodded.

“You don’t look like one nor have a spacey type name.”

Ryan laughed lightly at Cate’s comment. “This is our real form; we look human but with our status symbol engraved on our foreheads. As for our real names I am Rytar, and my prince is Barnik.”

“Oh, okay.” Cate closed her eyes and held her head low.

“Is this over with?” Cate and Ryan, or Rytar, both looked up to see Brennan standing next to them.

“I have just...”

Then Cate cut Ryan off and walked up to Brennan, challenging him almost. “I just found out a hell of a lot of shit in the last 3 minutes, so why don’t you go and shove a stick up your butt if you are gonna be an asshole again.”

“You know I am a prince now, you should have more respect.” Brennan locked eyes with Cate trying to win this little event.

“Not my prince. To me you are still an ignorant and arrogant jackass!” Cate then noticed that Brennan too had a symbol on his forehead, a sun, and it was glowing brightly and increase it’s brightness by the second.

“Barnik, do not cause a skeptical.” Ryan spoke softly to his charge. Then Brennan turned away from Cate, completely ignoring her as he spoke to Ryan.

“Foo-ut is going to get the rights to the Kye route and we are getting the rights to his Eopi route. Send that to my father, Foo-ut would like to start trading as soon as possible.”

“Yes my lord.”

“Are you guys always like this?” Cate spoke up.

“Like what?” Ryan inquired.

“I mean, you look about the same age and yet you aren’t friends?”

“I have no time for friends.” Brennan spoke and turned to Cate, starring at her. “I wonder what father would say if I brought a ‘pet’ home with me.”

Cate’s eyes went wide. “Hell no!” Then Brennan smirked a little, showing that he was lying. “You ass.”

“Leave now, I need rest.” Brennan and Ryan then laid down on the ground.

“You sleep here?” Cate motioned with her hands that she was referring to the park.

“Yes. Now leave.” Cate was shocked that Brennan would sleep on the ground, he seemed to think he was better than things like ‘camping’. Sadly, Cate began to think about if the cops came around and saw them sleeping on the ground. Something could happen to them, to Ryan. Brennan was an ass but Ryan was enjoyable and considerate.

“Get up.” Cate pulled at Ryan’s sleeve.

“What are you doing Cate?” He said as she let go of him.

“I’m taking two alien boys home with me. Don’t ask why; just get up.” Cate lightly kicked Brennan to get him up.

“Why can humans not learn?” He said as he sat up.

“Shut up and follow me.”

Brennan stood up and faced Cate, standing a good 4 or 5 inches over her. “Why do you want us to come with you?”

“You, I don’t care about, but Ryan is nice and cops come by and they check out this place hourly at night. So, just stop being all hoity-toity and just come with me.” Cate started walking to her house hoping that they were following behind. As she turned her head to look she saw both Brennan and Ryan following her home.

Once she reached her house, Cate looked back again to make sure that the boys had caught up with her and not gotten lost. Who was she kidding, when Ryan had chased her he didn’t seem the least bit winded so why would walking wear them out. Luckily, they had follow her home but Cate wasn’t sure if that really was a good thing or not anymore.

“Home sweet home.” Cate smiled at them and then opened the door into her house. After they were all inside Cate closed the door.

“The outside doesn’t so horrid now.” Brennan said as he took in his surroundings.

“The door isn’t locked; you can leave if you want.” Cate said as she walked into the kitchen. “Ryan do you want anything to drink?”

Ryan looked over at Brennan not sure what he should do about Cate attending his needs and not Brennan\'s first.

‘Answer her.’ Ryan heard in his mind from his prince, which was odd, since Brennan never let his needs go unfulfilled. Cate must entice him more than Ryan saw.

“Anything is fine Cate.” Ryan watched Brennan walk around the living room at the many pictures on the tables and the wall.

“Brennan, you want something while I’m in here?” Brennan smirked as he heard her talk to him.

“Water.” He then reached out his hand and touched a small picture of Cate and her father when she was only 3 or 4 years old.

“That’s my father. Don’t worry he’s not coming home tonight.” Cate said as she placed a bottle of water in front of Brennan and then proceed to hand Ryan a glass of lemonade. “Hungry? Or do you guys just want to go to bed?”

Ryan watched and waited for Brennan to answer.

“Bed will be fine.” Brennan put down the picture and then took a sip of the water and left it as he followed Cate and Ryan up the stairs. Once they reached the top of the stairs Cate stopped them.

“One thing you guys have to promise me is that you can’t go into my mothers’ room. It’s down stairs but she will freak out if two seemingly human guys walk in her bedroom. Ok?”

“Of course Cate. You will not have to worry about us.” Ryan assured her.

“All right, well this room you both can stay in. It has two beds and they are pretty comfy, better than the park ground at least.” Cate smiled as they walked into the purple painted room. “Ok goodnight. If you guys need anything my room is across the hall. Night.” Cate then closed the door and went to her own room.

Brennan sat down on one of the beds as Ryan sat on the other.

“She is very nice. Nicer than most other humans.” Ryan said.

“Yes, she is. Switch.” Brennan said as he got off his bed and switched beds with Ryan, again testing the comfort level.

“Barnik, you need to be nicer to her than you are being.” Ryan said sternly to his charge.

“I do not need to do anything I do not see as fit.” Brennan then started to unbutton his shirt.

“I am your watcher; you are my charge. You may be the prince but your mother and father appointed me as keeping you in line. You are not in line Barnik.” Ryan stood up in front of Brennan.

“What must I do to get you off my back?” Brennan said as he looked up to Ryan, who was hovering over him.

“Go talk to her. In fact, I might be wrong but I believe I’ve notice you seem to be attracted to her.”

“You are wrong Rytar. She is a human, if anything she is only worthy of being a plaything.” Brennan stood up from the bed to stand with his watcher. “I’ll go talk to her.” Brennan walked towards the door, then turned around. “I want that bed.” He said pointing to the bed he first sat on then walked out of the room.

Brennan walked across the hall; not all sure of what he was suppose to be doing. He cleared his throat and raised his hand to knock on the door, but then thought of what Rytar had said. Brennan would never admit to anyone that he did feel a stir for the feisty human, but how did Rytar know? Turning around, Brennan thought he might go talk with Rytar about what he thought about his prince. However, Rytar was responsible for keeping King Jornod, his father, informed of his behavior, which was the basis for his return to his home planet, Lucidia. Brennan turned back around to knock on Cate’s door but was shocked to find that he had been so deep in thought that Cate had opened the door and went back to her bed.

“Are you going to stand there all night? Cause that might be weird for me.” She said as he evaluated the situation.

“No, I just wanted to talk with you.” Brennan announced as he enter her room, closing the door behind him. He stopped in the middle of her room and looked around. The walls were a light blue, covered in pictures that he was guessing she drew. Once his eyes focused back at her he noticed she was laying her bed which was draped in white satin, showing off her body’s curves hauntingly to him.

“About?” Cate notice he was looking at her body and pulled her covers tighter around her petite form; somewhat overwhelmed by Brennan’s presence in her bedroom, they way he was looking at her and what he had commented on before.

Brennan cleared his throat again and began to focus on the task at hand. “About my behavior towards you, I didn’t mean to come off so insensitive to you. I was stressed about my meeting and didn’t want to have to worry about any humans seeing anything.” Brennan again smirked a little. “Even though that is what happen.”

“I’m sorry if I ruined anything for you. With the other alien guy I mean.” Cate looked down at her hands not sure what to do or even what she felt. Being alone with a boy was hard enough when it was in your own room, but making it that the boy wasn’t even from this galaxy made it a tad bit harder.

“Actually, you helped me out a lot with that conference with Foo-ut. He had never seen a real human, only heard about their skittishness towards aliens. I told him I knew and had planned it so that he could see for himself, as a show.” Brennan looked down at the ground somewhat embarrassed about telling Cate she had practically closed his deal for him.

“Your welcome, I guess.” Cate laughed and tucked some of her loose hair behind her ear. Brennan looked up at her as she laughed. He could tell it was a nervous laugh, he knew that he was having an effect on her. Little did she know she was having the same effect on him. “ So?” Cate said looking around her room nervously.

“So?” Brennan had never before in his life been speechless.

“Do you have any powers?” Cate was blushing a little after asking this and lowered her hand again to watch her hands.

“Yes, I guess they are powers.” Brennan laughed again. He had never laughed twice in the same day, let alone ever.

“What can you do?” Cate looked back up from her hands to him.

‘I can connect my mind to others to form a mind link, like this.’ Brennan told her. Cate laughed a little as she placed her hand on her head.

“That’s creepy. Can you read minds?” She said resting her hands on her lap again.

“No, but I can go into dreams.” He smirked at Cate and watched her face go from shock to amusement.

“Ha ha ha.” She rolled her eyes and then smiled at him.

“No, I swear. I can really go into others dreams. I can do a lot of things having to do with secondary senses, like the psychic sense and also emotions and the five senses.” Brennan looked toward Cates hands and then reached and grabbed one of them, holding it softly. “Let’s say you were chewing gum right now, I could touch your hand, like this, and make you think your gum tasted like cherries or anything else I wanted.” He looked up to see that Cate was starring at her hand in his. Brennan then placed her hand back to where it was before he held it. “It’s late. I’ll see you tomorrow and thank you for giving us a chance.” Brennan stood up and walked towards the door.

“Brennan?” Cate whispered.

“Yes?” He turned around and saw that Cate had rolled over and was facing the wall.

“If you ever go into any of my dreams, I will cut off your... whatever you have as genitals and mail them to Michael Jackson as play toys. Turn off the light and close my door would you? Night.”

Brennan smiled and did as she asked him to when he left.

“Who’s Michael Jackson?” He said to himself as he walked back to his room.
*****
Cate was smiling lightly as she held her hand. How could he be so cold? Then the next moment, after she turned her back on him, he came out being sweet and gentle to her. Maybe he was using his ‘powers’ on her, something he didn’t tell her he had. Cate couldn’t tell if she was feeling her feelings or something he had put into her mind. Cate’s smile soon faded and she let her hand drop.

‘He was just using you as a ‘pet’. Trying to get you to surrender to him.’ Cate told herself. She had to remember that he was an alien prince and that he would try and get whatever he wanted, no matter what. Cate closed her eyes and went to sleep thinking about Brennan, and trying to smash a tiny voice in her head telling her he was for real.

*****

“How did it go?” Ryan asked Brennan from his bed.

“Goodnight Rytar.” Brennan quickly dismissed Ryan’s question then got into bed holding the green bracelet she had dropped into park. He needed to think about the sensations Cate was raising in his body. Of course, being the prince of an entire planet he wasn’t stupid, he knew one of the feelings was lust. Many times before he had felt it and advanced on it. As much as he wished he could do just that with Cate he didn’t understand what else was passing through his blood. Cate didn’t swoon over his or act timid or coward before him, she was herself and showed that she didn’t like him at first. But that was just it, at first; perhaps she liked him now, more so than just lusting after him. Which he knew she was, he felt her body radiating with desire for him in her bedroom. However, Cate was human; Brennan didn’t understand humans sexuality very much or how they even approached sex. He had once heard some humans saved their first time for after marrying another. He held an odd respect for whatever Cate’s wishes were and that was incredible odd for him, since he never respected anyone other than Rytar or his mother, Elora. And now one tiny human girl had added herself unexpectedly to his list.
