Chapter 1
It was another beautiful day in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Kaylen Townsend was ridding through the countryside with her employer Dr. Andrew Baxter, a 52 year old veterinarian. They were on their way to see their next client.
At 22, Kaylen had already graduated from vet school and had her license to practice veterinary medicine. She had moved from Columbus, Ohio where she had gone to school to Lancaster to finish up her residency. A colleague from school suggested Dr. Baxter and that was how she got to where she was at.
“Hey Dr. B whose the next client we’re gong to?” Kaylen asked from the passenger seat.
“It’s an Amish farm. It’s owned by Ezekiel and Sarah Lapp. I’ve known them for about 20 years. I’ve been their veterinarian for 15 years. They are very nice people. They have 5 kids. Their names are Gabriel, Jebediah, Rebecca, Joseph, and Mary. Gabriel’s the oldest and Mary’s the youngest. You’ll enjoy them. They are very honest and trustworthy people.” Dr. Baxter stated.
Kaylen had always had a fascination with Amish people even when she was little. Kaylen turned and looked at Dr. Baxter when they pulled off the main road and onto a gravel-dirt road. They travel down the road for a few miles while Kaylen enjoyed the views of the rolling hills with the houses in the background.
About 20 minutes later Kaylen and Dr. Baxter arrived at the Lapp’s farm. Dr. Baxter hopped out followed by Kaylen.
“Today we have three horses that are being vaccinated, we’re vaccinating four cows and checking one cow that has been impregnated. Since you do so well with the hoses we’ll let you handle them. I’ll vaccinate the cows and then we’ll both look at the pregnant cow. Here come Ezekiel, Gabriel, and Jebediah. We’ll probably see Joseph later. Since its Saturday all kids are at home.”
Kaylen look up from where they had been talking to notice the three men coming over to them.
“Good afternoon Andrew. We have our animals ready for you. Gabriel and Jebediah are willing to help with anything you need. Joseph is with our one cow. He will help with anything that you need with her later on.” Ezekiel stated. When he had said the boys’ names he had also pointed them out.
Dr. Baxter turned to Kaylen then back to Ezekiel. “Ezekiel this is my new partner Dr. Kaylen Townsend. She is finishing up her residency. She will take care of the three horses and I’ll vaccinate the four cows. We’ll look at the other cow together last. So if you will let Gabriel and Jebediah help Kaylen you and I can take care of the cows.”
Ezekiel looked at Kaylen, “Welcome. It is nice to meet you. It is certainly all right if my sons help Dr. Townsend. Gabriel please show Dr. Townsend where our horses are.”
Kaylen looked over to Dr. Baxter then back over to Gabriel. “If you’ll give me a few minutes let me get the vaccines and then the files. We can go then.”
Kaylen walked over to the truck and grabbed the files, syringes, and vials. She then nodded over to Gabriel and Jebediah to lead the way. Kaylen got a good look at Gabriel. He must be at least 6 ft. 1 or 2 in. tall with blonde hair and green eyes. He has those handsome features that could make him a gorgeous movie star. Gabriel has to be at least my age. Jebediah looks a little like Gabriel but only a little younger and shorter. It should be fun to see what their other siblings look like. Kaylen thought as they headed down to the barn.
As they passed the main house Kaylen looked up to a cute little blonde haired girl possibly about five or six peeking out their back door at them.
“Excuse me but I believe that we are being watched.” Kaylen said turning to the two brothers.
Gabriel looked up to his house. “Mary you are supposed to be helping mama get everything ready for dinner. You will se us all in a few hours. Now go and help.”
Kaylen watched as Mary popped back inside the house. She couldn’t believe that this little girl did as she was told. Any other child would have bulked at the order. Kaylen was so deep in thought that she didn’t realize that Gabriel and Jebediah had stopped walking. She ran right into Gabriel.
“I’m sorry I wasn’t watching what was going on.” Kaylen said as she righted herself. She noticed that they had come up to the barn.
Gabriel and Jebediah open the barn doors and walked inside. Kaylen followed behind them and stopped at the first horse that was to be vaccinated.
“We’ll start with this guy and move our way down the line. I’ll have you guys hold them while I look them over. I’ll then give them the shots. I will make sure to stay with them for awhile to make sure none of them have any type of reaction to the vaccine. The files say that none of them have ever had reactions but we never know. Let’s begin.”
Kaylen looked over the first horse and found nothing wrong with him so she went ahead and gave the horse the vaccine. She did the same with the other two only having to use a file to float one of the horse’s teeth.
Kaylen asked Gabriel to go ahead and find Dr. Baxter and his dad to let them know she was done with the horses and would be there in a few moments.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Gabriel left the barn to head over to where Dr. Baxter and his father stood looking at the last cow.
“Dr. Baxter, Kaylen is done with the horses. She’s just checking to make sure they don’t have a reaction. Father I am going to start milking the other cows. I will also feed the other animals and get them settled in for the night. I will then go up to the house to get cleaned up.” Gabriel stated.
His father just nodded his head. He knew he had to get away from the Englishers. He felt weird because Kaylen was making him have feelings that he had never felt before. He headed back to the barn to milk the cows and get everything done for the evening.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Kaylen followed Jebediah to where the pregnant cow was. She saw that Dr. Baxter and Ezekiel were standing by a young boy. Kaylen could see that they were talking about the cow and her unborn calf.
Kaylen walked over to where they stood. Dr. Baxter saw Kaylen and turned to make room for her. “We have already looked at the cow. She seems to be coming along just fine. That boy over there is Ezekiel’s other son Joseph. Ezekiel’s wife, Sarah, has asked hat we join them for supper. I told her that we would. Do you have any problems with that?”
Kaylen was a little taken back by the question. “No it’s no problem I just have to be back to my place to care for my animals. They should be fine. Evening and Triple will be fine. The dogs won’t need to go out for another four hours since I went home during lunch. Besides I am really tired of TV dinners. So my answer is definitely a yes. Mr. Lapp your horses all seem to be fine. I did have to float one of the horse’s teeth.”
Ezekiel turned to Jebediah and Joseph, “Boys go ahead and head up to the house. Tell Sarah that Andrew and Dr. Townsend will be joining us. Gabriel is caring for the other animals then he’ll be up. I have something to discuss with Andrew and Dr. Townsend then the three of us will be up. Now up to the house and get cleaned up.”
Jebediah and Joseph left Kaylen, Dr. Baxter, and Ezekiel alone to discuss whatever Ezekiel needed to tell them.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*
Gabriel had finished milking the last of the cows and was on his way to feeding all the animals. He had seen his brothers head up to the house.
Dad must be showing Dr. Baxter and Dr. Townsend out to their automobile. Mayhap I won’t have to be around Dr. Townsend anymore. I don’t like the feelings I am having for her. I could not court her even if I wanted to. I do want to get to know her better though. She is so different from any of the Amish girls I know. I should forget about her and find some good Amish girl to marry. Mama would be very happy for her twenty-three year old son to marry. It is also time for me to either join the church or leave this lifestyle for good. Time to decide. Gabriel thought as he finished feeding the last of the animals.
Gabriel looked up to see his father walking up to the house with Dr. Baxter and Kaylen. Gabriel saw his father turn to him.
“Gabriel, Dr. Baxter and Dr. Townsend are joining us for supper. Jebediah and Joseph have already gone up. Join us as soon as you can.” Ezekiel said as he took Dr. Baxter and Kaylen up into the house.
Gabriel put everything back to where they belonged and headed up to the house. Gabriel thought: This should be fun.
