A Night in the Kitchens
‘WHAT DO YOU THINK YOU ARE DOING?’ shouted the red haired, spectacle wearing, around 50 year old woman we all call Matron. After our dinner we were, I admit, a bit hyper for our own good. We had rushed out of the dining hall and stopped just outside were the vending machines were. We purchased our goodies and then ran as fast as we could down the corridor from the dining hall where the clatter or knives and forks and chatter of boarders still emitted. We screamed and at the end jumped up to touch the ceiling. This was not practise that us fifth formers usually carry out. We’re meant to ‘set an example.’
Emily, Ellie, Jess, Hannah and myself were all 16, had been at this school ever since we were 11 and weren’t the best behaved students. Em was mousy haired, tall, freckly and quite timid if and only if you weren’t friends with her. Un-normally gullible and sweet the over excitable, mad side of Em only came out if you were well acquainted with her.
Ellie bared brown, extremely frizzy, curly hair. She was a keen horse rider a quite a keen liar too! Though very untidy, unorganised and sometimes a bit cheeky Ellie was always fun to have around.
Jess was an only child. Shoulder length blonde hair and brown eyes, Jess was a bit selfish and always had to be the centre of attention. Everything had to go her way. In other words she was a bit of a drama queen. But she had wit and was funny, she made getting into trouble a habit for us but we wouldn’t have her any other way. (Except maybe a little more considerate!) Most of the time though, she was a kind, active, vigorous girl.
Hannah, boisterous, independent and amusing. Dark brown haired and blue eyed Hannah was mischievous but a loyal, energetic and quite pretty friend. If someone was in trouble for something the both of them had done she would always step up and help. She was a clever girl and never had trouble getting on with someone new.
Me, well me I was Alex. I was shy, even round friends that I had known for all my life. But I was also loud, spoke my mind and when I felt like it could be animated, bold and rude. I was clumsy, always knocking something over or breaking something. I had a sense of style though, I didn’t follow the crowd unless it was something I liked. None of us were in the popular crowd but we were all happy.
When we heard the shout we all turned round and waited to see what we had done wrong this time.
‘Why are you running? You do not behave like that in school, you can come and help clear up the dining room when everyone’s finished.’
We all groaned. We trailed off back to the dining hall.

We saw Matron talking to one of the men. Unusually like her she was leaning on one of her hands, supported by her elbow, her head was tilted on one side and she was looking a little dreamy. Then she got up and said
‘Ok, keep them under control’ and patted his bum! We all burst out laughing, well silent laughter.
‘Eeewww’ said Jess ‘she fancies him, how pervy,’
‘She’s practically his grandmother, he’s only about 25’ said Hannah
‘No’ adds Em ‘I reckon he’s about..22’
‘Oh’ I said ‘and that’s a lot of difference,’ We smile at Em and then he comes over to us.
‘Ok, you can clean the tables, you spray with this’ he lifted up a bottle ‘ and then you wipe clean with the wet clothes’ he pointed at a bucket filled with warm soapy water and cloths ‘then you dry with the tea towels,’
‘Can we go in the kitchens?’ asked Hannah eyes glittering
‘We’ll see’
Ellie then said ‘What’s your name?’
‘Mark’ he said and leaves us to it. He was tall, has a South African accent, quite tanned skin and black hair. Not bad looking but not amazing.
‘Come on’ I said ‘the quicker we start, the quicker we can get it done. We all made a dive for the spray bottles. Em, Jess and I turned out triumphant. Trouble was with three people spraying and two people washing and drying there was much more spray than there needed to be. After we had finished we headed to find Mark to ask him what we should do next. Eager to go into the kitchens and because we had an excuse we crossed the line of the door.
‘Mark!’ we said voices raised.
‘What?’ came his voice
‘What shall we do now?’ asked Jess
‘Please can we come in the kitchens?’ begged Hannah
‘Ok but you basically already in them,’ we were way past the line.
Another guy called Barry who was about 40 joined us.
‘This is Barry, he’s the head chef,’
‘Hi, who are you?’
We introduced ourselves and then they showed us everything in the kitchens. The ovens, the dishwashers etc. And the monstrously large fridge. We all piled in and then as a joke Mark shut the door on us. We went past trays of biscuits.
‘Is this tomorrow’s break?’ asked Ellie looking hopeful
‘Yes it is’ said Barry, he looks at Mark and nods. Mark got 7 biscuits out and we all nibbled contentedly.
‘Do you want us to help you every week?’ asked Jess
‘I dunno, I’ll have to ask Matron,’
We then talked about all the girls which we didn’t like.
‘One girl in the sixth form never says please or thank-you’ said Mark ‘she thinks she’s better than that, Alex something,’
‘Alexa Baldro’ we all said
‘Yep’ he replied
‘Why don’t you say something’ said Em. I told you she was gullible and oblivious to the world around her.
‘Because’ began Mark ‘we could get arrested if we talk to you or be rude to you,’
‘Really?’ I said
‘Yep,’ he looks at me for a bit and his eyes give a little glint.
~~~***~~~
When we had finished that night we all agreed it was fun and we wanted to do it again. Mark and Barry were friendly. That night after we had agreed to go to sleep I thought about the way Marks eyes had flashed at me. My tummy felt funny. I couldn’t like him could I?
