I Promised

"I Promised"
The sky was black and the air was cold. The sun had set hours ago and darkness had over taken the land. A figure dressed in black walked amongst the graves of the cemetery, searching for one in particular. In his hand he carried a single black rose, a flower that seemed dead and alive at the same time. As he pasted each of the graves, he read the names of there inhabitants. He read the names of the young and old, brothers, sisters, husbands and wife\'s. None of which could escape death in the end.
The figure dressed in black finally stopped at a grave and read the name. " Eileen." He walked up to the grave and placed his hand on it. " I promised I would be back didn't I?" Tears begin to fill his eyes as he placed the black rose on top of the tombstone and stepped back. "Why did you do it Eileen? I don't understand." The tears in his eyes began to flow freely now as he stood in front of the grave. " I guess that\'s a lie isn't it" he smiled as he said this, he raised his right and removed a silver ring from his pinky. " I do understand why you did it. You understood when I tried to end it all." He continued to cry, but smiled at the same time. "You were the only one who came to visit me. And now I am the only who has come to visit you." He removed a cigarette from his pocket and light it.
"You couldn't even tell me yourself." He took a drag of the cigarette. "You hung your self." He began to pace around the grave as though he were questioning it. "If your brother hadn't of called me that night I never would of known Eileen." The figure in black wiped the tears from his face. "Did you think so little of me? Well did you God Dammit!" As he stood their in the dark yelling at the tombstone, his face was a mixture of depression, anger and desperation. "Did things really get so bad that you had no choice but to end your own life? You left me with no answer to these questions." He took a drag of the cigarette and returned to the front of the grave. "Even after what we went through, after what had happened to me, you decided to go through with it." The cigarette in his hand was spent. He dropped it, took another one from his pocket and light it. "So was all that talk of having hope in life bullshit? Did you even bother to think back at what you did after I tried to kill myself?"
"You slapped me and started to cry. You asked me why did I try and leave you." The figure in black collapsed to his knees and let the cigarette fall from his mouth. "All I could say is that is wasn't worth it anymore, going on day after day with nothing to look forward to." He opened his hand and looked at the ring he had taken off of it. " I had no one to love, and no one loved me. Expect you." He placed his face into his hands and continued to cry. "You kissed me and told me that I had you. You said that you always knew how I felt about my life and how I wanted to end it." The figure in black leaned back and sat in the grass. "You said you always knew that my smiles were hollow ones. Like I was trying to hide a deeper pain; they're still hollow and nothing has changed." He tilted his head toward the sky and stared at its emptiness for a minute. "I guess that\'s not true, something has changed, I don't have you anymore. Death is the only thing that can change things, everything else is just a lie. You can't be saved by a lie."
He threw the ring at the tombstone, only to have it bounce off and land in the grass. "That was our promise." The figure in black stood back up and wiped the tears from his face. "I gave that to you the day I left, I gave that ring to you as a promise that I would come back. You said that you would be here." He turned to walk away, but took one last look at the grave before leaving. " I kept my promise Eileen, I came back." He turned to leave " I kept my promise to never stop loving you. Why couldn"˜t you of kept yours?"
