Fences and Roads
Fences and Roads
I find myself alone on the opposite side of the road,
Searching for a path to cross back into the fray.
Watching as life roars by along the other side.
Try to sneak by but I’m halted by reality,
It’s not my place to go where I have no invitation.
Stand by the fence and pretend I can feel the sunshine.
Pretend I’m not alone with a record and a bottle of wine,
Stuck on the same verse because I am glued to my seat
Waiting for eternity to take its toll on me,
Or for reality to kick in, whichever comes first.
Waiting, watching a world that I cannot grasp.
Hoping that, just this once, my dream won’t snap.
But I can find comfort in a dream where I don’t
Have to wake up and face the day again because
Each one is as empty and insignificant as the last.
I’m trying to find a way back over, back to a sea of troubles.
Back to a world where life is as fleeting as a sideways glance
A world where everyone looks ahead instead of behind.
And if you’re left in the dust, well that’s just too damn bad,
You’re forgotten.
