Prolog - Muzukashii

Prolog – Muzukashii

Akemi Yoshida slumped down into one of the plastic bus seats and took a bite off her Shokupan.
Now Yoko was gone as well.
America.
She could not blame her for accepting that one-time offer and moving to the United States. But she already missed her friend, although their tearful goodbye at the airport was just a few hours ago.
Akemi closed her eyes for a moment and pictured her young and good looking friend as she walked off towards the plane, her hair waving and herself not even looking back. At this thought she lost her appetite for her little snack completely.
She shoved the sandwich back into its paper bag and put it wearily back into her schoolbag. Then she threw back her waist long blonde hair and straightened her skirt. The dusky streets of the northern area of Tokyo and its people going on with their own business passed her window. But in fact she did not notice any of this.
//Two out of four!// she thought, //Looks like only Yamato and me remained from our old clique..//
The bus cleared the more they left Tokyo behind and rolled towards the mountains in the North, and it was almost empty when it finally turned into the forlorn country road which lead towards the residential school.
She looked at her own face reflecting in the window.
Out of the corner of her eye she saw another girl with rather heavy luggage. A trunk and a heavy bag piled up in front of her feet. But Akemi did not take much notice of this girl either.
“Next stop: Muzukashii-school!” a mechanic voice boomed after a while above Akemi’s head and she rose. When she finally focused her surroundings again, the first thing she noticed was a thick English book the other girl stuffed back into her shoulder bag and then got up as well. Akemi frowned.
//A new girl?// was her first thought. Most probably a new girl, summer break had just started after all.
//She is pretty!// was the second one.
When the bus at length came to an halt at the end station, Akemi jumped out off the bus at once and lost the other girl out of sight. She hastened up the stone staircase leading to the parkway in front of the school. On a gravel way amidst the spacious grounds she suddenly stopped and had to grin.
//Why oh why do I feel watched?// she thought wryly.
She cast a suspicious glance at the hedge beside her.
“Oh damn!” she heard a male voice whine, “Your sixth sense struck again!”
Yamato, her last remaining, but most faithful friend, seemed to have waylaid her, for now he jumped out from behind the hedge with a wide grin and opened his arms. “Tadaaa!” He gave his friend a short but wild hug which almost knocked her over.
“Hi Yamato!”, she said and gave a slight smile.
Although she was sad, Yamato’s sheer presence war cheering her up. He was a clown through and through. A lovable clown, though.
“Did everything work out alright? Did she leave okay?”, he asked without stopping to grin. Akemi tilted her head in surprise. She was wondering about the fact that Yamato did not seem very sorry about Yôko’s departure, but then again he is always been a caring and life-loving person.
“Yes, everything went alright. She said she is going to give me a call when she has arrived in Washington.” The corners of Akemi’s mouth went a little bit up.
“Come on, don’t pull a face like this.”, he said and put an arm around her shoulders, “I am sure you will feel better and soon and you will find someone new.”
He pulled her slowly towards the main entrance and gestured wildly with his remaining free hand while he was speaking. They entered the bright entrance hall where they where immediately sucked into the hustle and bustle of students.
“Come on, I will bring you to your room.”, Yamato said with a demanding voice, “I think we have a lot to talk about.”
He gave her an encouraging smile. Together they went upstairs and then turned right towards the elevators and the staircase leading to the upper floors.

The bright sandstone building towered before her. She looked at the letter she was holding and started walking towards the building of Muzukashii-school, dragging her luggage behind her. With much effort she hauled it through the main gate into the hall. Stopping, she checked her watch to make sure she was not running late.
“Kiyoko Inoue?” she heard a harsh and deep female voice calling out her name. Kiyoko looked up and spotted a small and scrawny elderly woman, her auburn- and obviously dyed- hair pulled back into a knock, as stern looking as her whole countenance. She was wearing a neat but old fashioned suit and high-heeled leather shoes.
Professor Dr. Shoko Kozue, headmistress of the school, punted with clanging footsteps down the stairs to welcome Kiyoko.
Kiyoko felt a bit queasy the moment she saw her. She knew that this was not quite the kind of person she would have friendly feelings for. There was something intimidating about her. Alone the cold and emotionless glance she had cast Kiyoko made her shiver. According to the terms of manner she bowed to the headmistress, who herself just nodded her head to shorten the procedure.
//Typical case of authority...// Kiyoko thought and sighed under her breath.
“I hope you’ve had a pleasant flight from Osaka.” the headmistress went on, although she did not seem to really mean it.
“It has been very comfortable, thank you.” Kiyoko replied in a bland and submissive tone. The other woman nodded slightly.
“I do not like to be held up by unnecessary conversation, so would you be so kind and follow me, please; I am going to introduce you to your room-mate who will instruct you further.” Kozue gestured her to follow and climbed up the stairs again. Kiyoko grabbed her luggage and started dragging it after her.
“Just as you like, Dr. Kozue.”

Akemi was sitting on her pillow bed and had her arms flung tightly around Yamato.
“Now don’t start to cry again, Akemi..”, he said, “You are acting as if she really died.” //Even though this would not be this bad// he added mentally. Those words sounded quite harsh, but he could not stop grinning. In fact he was right. Akemi just nodded, her head leaning against his shoulder. For a moment she closed her eyes and listened.
<>
She heard the approaching sound of quick and high-heeled footsteps. Akemi’s eyes widened.
“Yamato?”
“What is it, darling?”, he said and grinned. She looked back at him unsmiling:
”Is it just me or is there really someone in high-heels coming towards this room?” Yamato went very pale in an instant.
“This is NOT good!”, he said with a slight panic in his voice. Akemi got up and rushed to the wardrobe while Yamato cursed under his breath.
“I am doomed, what shall I do!” She took him by the collar and pushed him head on into the wardrobe.
“If you only just as much as give a breath I am going to kill you before Kozue even had left the room!” Yamato, looking fairly confused, shut his lips tight so hard that they appeared to be only two thin white lines and held his breath. Akemi locked the wardrobe, took her English book and seated herself with the most innocent expression upon her face back onto the bed. The door flung open the moment Akemi was just pushing back a strand of hair. The headmaster came in resolutely, behind her a girl whom Akemi could not see because the headmistress had built herself up right in front of her.
//Did she notice anything?// Akemi thought anxiously.
“I am having a new room-mate for you, Mrs. Yoshida!” Kozue broke the new without further ado. Akemi gave a relieved sigh. Kozue turned to invite the other girl into the room.
“This is Kiyoko Inoue from Osaka, she will be graduating at this school this year. I expect you to familiarise her with everything!”
Akemi had a closer look at the new girl.
//That is the girl from the bus earlier today, isn’t she?!//, she noticed.
Smiling she turned back to the headmistress.
“Just as you like, Headmistress” But to Akemi’s confusion Kozue just held her head high and started to inhale the air.
“It smells like boys here!” she muttered.
//Shit!//, Akemi cursed under her breath, //Don’t count your chickens before they are hatched!//
Trying hard to cover her nervousness she just said: “No, you must be mistaken. It cannot be!”
“And I do hope that for your sake, Mrs. Yoshida! Well then, take care of your duties!”
With this said she whooshed past Kiyoko out of the room, shoved the new girl inside and banged the door shut. Kiyoko took an unsure step towards Akemi.
“He...”
She did not get further, for Akemi darted across the room to the wardrobe and opened it. A panting and blue-faced Yamato came out and collapsed onto the floor. Akemi crouched herself beside him.
“Is everything alright?”
“Sure it is!” Yamato replied sarcastically. “Never, NEVER EVER force me to hold my breath for longer than two minutes…”
“It is not my fault if you are letting yourself to be trained that easily!” Akemi waved an impatient hand. Kiyoko, who was still standing with all her luggage in the middle of the room, could not help but smile. It was only now that Yamato spotted the new girl, jumped up to his feet and straightened his hair.
“With respect, my name is Yamato Yamamoto!” , he introduced himself, grabbed Kiyoko’s hand and shook it so vigorously as if he wanted to tear off her arm. “Erm…Yamato?”, Akemi addressed him. But Yamato, wearing his usual wide grin, was unstoppable.
“Yamato!!”, Akemi insisted. Yet no reaction whatsoever. Now Akemi was at the end of her tether and hit him hard onto the back of his head.
“Man!” Yamato whined, “You are soooo mean!” “Teasing little Yamatos is my favourite hobby, don’t you know?”
Kiyoko still smiled frowning.
“My name is Kiyoko Inoue.”, she said looking at Yamato. Akemi and Yamato both looked back at her and broke into a wide smile.
“What is so funny about the two of us?” Akemi asked.
“You two are just such a wonderful sight…just wonderful!” Akemi grinned from ear to ear. “I like you. I think we will get along very well. My name is...” Before she could finish her sentence Yamato was yet again interrupting her happily.
“..The terror of everyone, we know that.” He looked at Kiyoko and grinned.
“You should be glad that she likes you. Better don’t have her for an enemy. That could get painful.” Yamato was still grinning when he felt Akemi’s hand slowly creeping up his neck. Only when she began to tighten her grip his smile faded.
“Owowowowowow..”
“Just like he said, one should not have me as their enemy…WHAT WERE YOU THINKING, SPEAKING ABOUT ME AS IF I WAS SOME VIOLENT MANIAC????”
She let go of Yamato and smiled at Kiyoko, who had been witnessing this strange scene with quite some bafflement.
“My name is Akemi Yoshida. Nice to meet you.”
“Nice to meet you.” Kiyoko replied and smiled back.
“So, what are we going to do now, my pretty ones?”, Yamato interrupted yet again. For a moment Akemi just looked at him, and Kiyoko was wondering what would happen next, but Akemi just smiled and pushed Yamato slowly towards the door.
“I don’t know what you are going to do now, but I will show Kiyoko around now. Have a nice day.”, with this she closed the door smiling. The moment the door clicked into the lock she began to giggle.
“Well, we have a lot to do, or would you rather take a rest first, or maybe unpack? I could help you if you like.”
“No no, I will have enough chance to sleep later. Show me around the school, please, everything else can wait.” Akemi grinned at her and Kiyoko returned the smile. “I like your attitude. Let’s go.” Akemi took Kiyoko by the hand and together they left the room.
