Trent Desmond, A tall, midnight black haired man who lived for his job first, and his family second sits at his large desk, in his corner office in the ComTec high rise building in Rockport, New York. He looks at some report he had one of his employees write up on the productivity of the company. He sighs and lays the report down and leans back in his chair smiling, quite sure in the knowledge that by this time next year, he would be sitting in the even larger office, two floors above. Trent was a man on the rise, and he was married to the loveliest woman around, now if only he could do something about those damned kids of hers. The two youngest Terra at five, and Eddy at eight respected him, and showed no signs of problems. It was the two older ones that gave him problems, the two that remembered their real father. Angela at fourteen was allowed some slack, being a teenager was hard, he knew this, but it still didn’t allow the level of disobedience she got away with. He couldn’t even stand that she refused to call him Dad, or even Daddy Trent like the younger kids, but she just simply called him Trent. The real problem was Cam, the eighteen year old. As far as Trent and Cam were concerned, they didn’t talk often, and didn’t see each other a lot, and that suited both just fine. When Trent left for work in the morning, he would see that little pricks Yamaha motorcycle parked off to the side of the drive way, far from his precious “Jag”. His nineteen seventy-three Jaguar was the most valued possession Trent had. When he returned from work, the bike was usually gone. Trent could control the youngest for the most part, and Angela at least a little, but Cam, was a totally different thing. Cam, the boy not even close to nineteen, was already as tall as Trent, with short brown hair, and a bad attitude. When Trent had married his mother Cam hadn’t been at the wedding, he was moving his stuff into the basement of his new home. His mother has allowed him to do this for one simple reason; Trent did not go down to the basement. Sara had known there were going to be problems between Trent and Cam. Cam had loved his father dearly and he felt betrayed that his mother remarried. Trent thought about all this as the phone rang, and he leaned forward again, going back to work.
Cam Tolliver, who refused to take his step-father’s name, rode down the main street of Rockport, his old leather bomber jacket keeping the cool October air out as he rode. As he stops at a stop light he sets his foot on the road, his heavy work boots secularly tied on his feet, his helmet covering his face, the image of a wolf air brushed onto it. Cam knew how his mother felt about his bike, but she knew he was always careful and always wore his gear, if Cam were to get into an accident; he wouldn’t get too banged up, unless it was a real bad one. He looks around with the visor of his helmet up, showing his bright, piercing blue eyes. Cam could remember his father well, remembers how he looked, and he knew he was growing into what his father once was, before the cancer hit, before all the treatments and medicines had prolonged his life another few months, before his body finally gave up the fight. As the light turns Cam twists the throttle of the bike and continues his drive down the main drag. Cam feels the envelope in his inside jacket pocket shift a little as he pulls into the Bank of America parking lot. He parks the bike, pulling his helmet off and placing it on the handle bars. He pulls the envelope out of his jacket and looks at it. Inside was his monthly portion of a large amount of cash that his father had left him. Mitchell Tolliver hadn’t been what a person could have called rich, but he was smart as was his son, when the stocks he had from work had climbed to a record high, he had sold them all, leavening a very large amount of cash. Cash no doubt Trent had wanted to get his hands on, but it was Cam, not his mother that controlled the cash, which is the way Mitchell wanted it. Mitchell had wanted Sara to not have to worry about the cash, and he knew that Cam would use it wisely for his sisters and brother. Cam opens the envelope, looking at the four checks in the envelope, each one getting larger as the child got older, starting with Terra at two hundred fifty, growing to Cam’s check for three thousand. Every second Tuesday like clockwork Cam went to the bank to cash the checks, so the tellers were not surprised to see him on this day “Morning Cam” the young teller says from behind her desk. “Morning Jenny” He says as he walks up to the desk “How are you doing?” Jenny smiles and shrugs “Good as can be expected.” Cam smiles and nods “Guess that’s the best anyone can hope for right?” Jenny giggles and nods as Cam hands her the checks. She deposits them into the bank accounts and smiles “Same time next month Cam?” Cam nods “you know it. Have a good day Jenn” “Have a good day Cam.” Jenny says as Cam walks out. Cam walks out the door and runs a hand through his short hair, thinking about the other things he needed too do. Cam sighs and shakes his head “need to make a damn list” he says to himself. “You’re always talking to yourself Cam” a familiar voice says and Cam looks up, seeing Jade Calle, one of his best friends. “Hey Jade” he says as he walks up to his bike, which Jade is currently standing next too” How did you know I was here?” Jade smiles and nods to the bike “Only one in town like it, and because you’re always here on the second Tuesday of the month, you’re like a clock.” Cam smiles and picks up his helmet “you got your helmet?” Jade smiles “of course” she holds up her helmet, a light blue background with a flying angel air brushed on it. “So I guess you want a ride?” Cam says smiling “Well, it would be nice… the kind of thing a friend would do…” Cam sighs and shakes his head “Just get on” Jade giggles as she slips the helmet on and climbs on behind Cam, wrapping her arms around him to hold on as he starts the bike “So, where too?” Cam asks over his shoulder “The library” she says and Cam groans “You’re going to try and make me study?” Jade giggles and rests her head against Cams back “Yep” Cam sighs again and backs the bike up “Sounds like I’m in for a fun day” he says to himself as he drives the bike down the street to the library.
Despite Jade’s trying, Cam wouldn’t study and soon they left the library behind. “I need to go shopping if you want to come along” Cam says as they leave and Jade looks at him. “You… Shopping alone?” Cam nods “yeah…so?” Jade laughs and looks at him “I think I need to come to make sure you don’t get just junk food” Cam rolls his eyes and they both mount the bike. Cam pulls into the small store and parks, putting both helmets into the large bags on the side of the bike before walking with Jade into the store. Cam and Jade pull up to Cam’s house hours later, as the sun is setting in the west, Trent’s “Jag” already parked in the driveway and Cam grabs the bags “if you want to wait out here I’ll be right back…” he says turning to Jade. Jade arches an eyebrow and takes some of the bags “Hey, your parents know me, it’s no problem” Cam sighs and heads to the door. The two walk into the kitchen and lay the bags down on the counter when Sara walks into the kitchen. “Hey mom” Cam says as she walks in. Cam turns and sees that his mom has a large black and blue burse on her face. Everyone is quiet, and then Cam walks over to his mom and holds up his hand. Holding it against his mothers face in a fist, his hand perfectly covers the burse and then Cam lowers his hand. “Mom… what did he do to you?” Sara looks at Cam “Nothing Cam, I fell down the stairs that’s all.” Cam looks into her eyes then steps past his mom “Cam he didn’t do anything!” Sara says as he steps past “Cam! Don’t do anything you’ll regret!” Jade says as they both follow him. He walks up the stairs into Trent’s study and bangs the door open “Trent! What did you do to my mother?!” He yells as the door opens. Trent looks up from his desk at Cam “what are you going on about Cam?” Cam reaches over the desk and pulls Trent to his feet “The burse! You bastard you hit her!” Trent looks into Cam’s eyes “I did no such thing, boy! Now let me go!” Cam lets go of Trent and looks him square in the eye “I swear to God if you touch her again… I’ll make you wish you had never stepped into our lives!” Trent looks coolly at Cam “Are you through?” Cam steps back and turns, walking past Jade and Sara. Sara stays at the door as Cam rushes pass, and Jade follows him.
Jade catches Cam outside next to his bike and he turns to her “I’m sorry you had to see that Jade.” She looks at him and shakes her head “It’s not your fault Cam; you should go to the cops about this…” Cam shakes his head “She’ll just claim she fell again” Jade sighs and puts a hand on Cam’s shoulder “But you can’t just let this continue Cam… she’s your mother… she needs your help” Cam nods “I know… but how can I help someone that doesn’t want it?” Jade shrugs and Cam nods to his bike “Hop on, I’ll take you home” Cam climbs onto the bike and Jade grabs his shoulder “Not my place… lets go up the hill, to the look out point… please?” Cam smiles and nods “Sure Jade.” He lowers his helmet onto his head and Jade climbs on behind him, resting her head on his back again and wrapping her arms around him as they speed off into the night. Trent watches Cam go then turns to Sara “Did you tell that little fuck I hit you!? Did you!?” Sara cringes back from Trent and shakes her head “No Trent I would never…” Trent backhands her across the face “Shut up! That boy of yours is nothing but trouble, and you better believe that the second I can get him out of my house I will!” Sara starts crying and Trent looks at her and sighs softly “Sara… you know it’s for the best… he’s just… too unruly, he’s a danger to himself and to us…” Sara nods slowly “I know Trent… I just wish there was another way.” Trent holds Sara, listening to the whine of the bike speeding off. Cam feels Jade holding him closer then usual. He knows he’s going too fast, but that doesn’t stop him from speeding up a little more. “Slow down” Jade calls as they fishtail around a curve “Please Cam! Slow down!” He contemplates speeding up but he gives in to Jade and slows down. He can hear Jade’s exhale of relief in his ear as he gets to the overlook of Rockport. They sit on the bike looking out over the city, the lights illuminating the valley. Cam kills the engine and they both sit on the dead bike “You know… we can just head over the other side of the mountain…” Jade starts but Cam shakes his head cutting her off “No… I’m not going to run, that’s what he wants… I have to save my mom… and what if I left? He’d start on the others… Eddy and Terra would be the last, but it would happen…” Jade nods slowly “Yeah… but what are we going to do?” Cam steps off the bike and takes him helmet off and walks to the railing, looking out over the city “I don’t know Jade… I really don’t know.” Jade walks up next to him, wishing she had brought her jacket as the cool night air cuts into her, the exposed flesh of her face and arms already numb from the ride up. Cam looks over at her, seeing her shiver a little he puts his hands in his pockets and hugs her, surrounding her in the jacket as well. Jade looks up at him, and sees his eyes are looking over the town again and she sighs softly and rests her head back against his chest. Cam looks down at Jade and sighs softly, knowing that he has no choice but to fight Trent, knowing that he would probably never have the chance with Jade that he wanted if he fought Trent. The two stand looking over the small town the light’s blinking off as people head off to bed. The lights dim all around town as night stakes it’s claim on the world again, the small town of Rockport, shutting down for another night.
