Chapter One

\"Why does my life have to be so messed up?!\" shouted Darien as he slammed his fist into the soft earth. He had run away from home again, and found himself deep in the woods, in a small clearing where he had been staring into the clear night sky. He was sitting on the ground, leaning against a tree and trying to forget about his tragic childhood. Darien was a seemingly normal 17-year-old boy, at least to his parents. As with most parents, they assumed when he started wearing black clothes, it was just a phase and would pass soon enough.

\"But no… they don\'t understand… no one understands what I\'m going through…\" he sighed as he closed his sapphire eyes. He was an attractive young man, with dark hair, flawless pale skin, and a slender build. Even so, he was always ignored at school, had very few friends, and a family that could care less about him. Darien shuddered at the mere thought of his family.

\'They\'re the reason I have so many problems,\' he thought to himself as his mind slipped back into the memories of his childhood. Most people would consider it a happy childhood, but not Darien. Although he did get a lot of the things he wanted, it would never make up for the friends he didn\'t have and the countless hours he spent fearing the wrath of the Christian god. His mother started bringing him and his little brother to a Pentecostal Sunday School when they still young. Sure, it seems innocent enough, but when he got older he realized how horrible being in the church really was. Remembering how he just followed them blindly without a second thought was enough to make him sick.

\'How could I have been so foolish? Maybe it was because I was only a child, but still… Week after week, year after year, they would tell me the same bullshit over and over, until I was like a little brainwashed zombie who couldn\'t think for himself anymore. I suffered through that for years before I finally re-learned to think for myself. I remember all the hours I spent worrying about facing the wrath of the ever-vengeful and jealous god of Christianity… it was hell in itself.\'

Tears were starting to form in Darien\'s beautiful blue eyes, but he quickly wiped them away as he thought about how much his God and Goddess loved him and watched over him. They were peaceful, infinitely forgiving creatures, elegant and beautiful… at least, that\'s how Darien liked to think of them. They were so much different than anything he had ever imagined the Christian god to be. He felt as if they were only there for him, to watch over him and to always be there for him.

\'Maybe they really are here just for me, and there\'s a power even greater than them, that\'s in all of us,\' he thought as he got up and dusted himself off. He looked up at the immeasurable velvet blanket above him once again, still awestruck by the beauty of the moon and stars. Darien began walking through the woods again, not caring where he was going, or where he would end up. He just knew needed to go somewhere and let himself wander wherever his legs took him. Little did he know what fate had in store for him this night…
