Then The Night Comes
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I\'m still not sure whether this will actually be the start of this little tale. You’ll notice that I\'ve gone with all new characters, but don’t fret; Jacob, Sandra and the rest will be part of the story, just not this part, I\'d really like to know what everyone thinks of it so please R&R, it will get me writing faster, well as fast as I can what with finals looming overhead and me being so unprepared for them.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I was sitting at the bar in Feral Hearts when I first noticed her, she was cute, she looked young but she was in the bar, so she most likely just looked young for her age, she looked totally wasted, first I thought ‘looks like she can’t hold her liquor,’ then I noticed the guy she was with, he was a shapeshifter, I knew because so was I, I was a member of the local wereleopard pard, pard is just the name for a group of wereleopards, like a gaggle of geese or a flock of sheep, great now I\'m hungry.
I had seen him at Narcissus before, it was the first shifter bar in the city, it was still the best one out of all of them, and by best I mean most popular, I personally wasn\'t the biggest fan of the place but that was because I had my fair share of bad experiences there.
I think his name was Lance, I could be wrong though; he was rubbing against her as if she were a shifter, she didn’t seem to mind but she wasn\'t exactly in the right state of mind to be making judgment calls. I had made it my duty to make sure he didn’t do anything illegal to her; all it takes is one shifter to fuck up everything for the rest of us. I watched them for ten more minutes until he dragged her out of the club, she could barely walk on her own, she had so much to drink, that\'s the great thing about being a shifter I didn’t have to worry about getting that drunk, we metabolize alcohol so fast the most you can get from a night of heavy drinking is a little light headed.
I followed them out of the club, keeping my distance but staying close enough to do something should I have to. They disappear down an alley, I keep on the edge of the alley against the wall of the little boutique, I could hear him talking to her,
“Come on don\'t worry about it, it’ll be fun,” she replies to him with a drunken giggle,
“I don\'t know, I mean wont it hurt?”
“Yeah but only at first baby, then it will feel amazing, better than sex even,” shit he was talking about turning her, that was illegal if it was done against a persons will, I know because that was how I happened to become a wereleopard, there is a wide variety in our pard even with so few members even I\'m different, I have a condition called melanin where my fur is all black but you can still see the leopard markings in the right light.
I step into the alley after them, “I think you should step away from her, slowly,” I use a strong commanding voice, hoping there wouldn’t have to be a fight,
“Oh? And just what are you going to do if I don\'t?” my only reply is a low feline growl. I shift my hands, growing long claws and I bare my lengthened teeth to him, “Whoa hey buddy, fine she’s yours.” He rushes past me I can smell his fear rolling off him like a strong cologne, I figured he would be a coward, I knew that he wasn\'t a member of any group, there weren\'t many werefoxes in town, I doubt any of them even knew one another. He probably wanted to turn her so he could have another one like him. I can sympathize but he should have found someone willing. I shift back to human and turn my attention back to the girl.
“Are you all right?” I ask her, she sways from side to side, then runs over to a dumpster and empties her stomach; I pull her long black hair from her face and rub her back, she coughs up what is left in her throat and slumps down to her knees, she wraps her arms around herself,
“Ugh, I\'m never drinking again,” she groans, I slip the leather coat off my shoulders and wrap it around her, she looks up at me with a pair of beautiful green eyes, “Thanks,”
“You’re welcome,” I help her to her feet. Her legs wobble underneath her, “Where do you live?”
“Why?” she pulls away from me,
“I\'m taking you home; I don\'t think it’s safe for you to be alone right now,”
“’Kay,” she nearly falls over; I catch her in my arms. I wrap my left arm around her shoulders keeping her steady, I wait a moment for her to answer my question then ask it again,
“Where do you live?” she stares blankly at me for a moment and furrows her brow,
“I dunno,” I lean her against the wall and slip her purse off her shoulder,
“You have ID right?” she nods. I spend what feels like an hour rifling through her tiny purse just to find a piece of ID. I find her drivers license, and check the home address, my eye catches the date of birth, “You’re only eighteen?” she shakes her head and pulls another ID from her pocket,
“See, twenty-one,” I look at it for just a second and I can already tell it’s a fake, I know because in my earlier years as a shapeshifter I wasn\'t the most upstanding citizen.
“Whatever, come on I\'ll get you home,” I walk her to my car and sit her in the passenger seat, I buckle her seatbelt and walk over to the other side of the car and get in, I buckle myself in and start the engine, she reaches over and turns the radio on and most of the way up, “Leave the radio off,” I turn the knob till it clicks off and pull it from the dash. I roll her window down, “If you’re going to puke again I\'d appreciate it if you did it out the window,” she bobs her head back and forth I can’t tell if she’s nodding or her neck just went slack, the rest of the drive is completely silent, I pull into the driveway to her house, half the lights are on I\'m assuming someone’s home, I walk her to the door and ring the bell, after a few seconds the door swings open, a large older man is standing in the doorway, his eye’s brighten as he sees her, they are the same color as hers,
“Sabine, I thought you went out with Mary?” his eyes meet mine, and I smell something familiar, shapeshifter, a wolf, a strong wolf, my heart pounds in my throat as I try to explain what happened, his eyes stare coldly right through me, I lower my head in a submissive act, there is no way I could take him nor would I want to in the first place, “You’re telling me my little girl went out drinking even though she’s underage?”
“Well, yeah,” I reply sheepishly,
“Then how did she get into the bar?”
“There\'s a fake ID in her pocket, she showed it to me,” he stares down at me, I can feel the tension in the air along with his anger,
“Get off my property, Now,” his voice is a deep growl, his green eyes have gone amber, I take it he either doesn’t believe me or is just pissed off, either way I wasn\'t going to argue, I get in my car and start the engine, as the door shuts I realize I left my coat on her, I ponder for a moment whether I want to risk getting ripped to shreds over a coat. I can always get a new coat, my hide, that will heal but it’ll hurt like hell, I\'ll just get a new coat.
It’s well after three in the morning before I get home. I live in a three-bedroom bungalow near the center of the city. I wander through the hall to my bedroom kicking my shoes off on the way; I flop down on my bed, still in my clothes and quickly slip into a deep sound sleep.
I\'m still not sure whether this will actually be the start of this little tale.
