The dust of the world

She was cold…

She had been for a long time.

The bitter wind making her bones ice and shards of glass not bone not alive.

He had left so long ago she wondered if he was real..if the sun that had one time warmed her had been real..

Now all she had left was a small room with shot out windows.

Now all she could do was wait…

For Jason to come back.

So she could be the messenger of death to him.

She remembered the day he left, he held her close and kissed her.

“Here..take this” He pressed a gun into her hand.

“I hate guns” She shook her head and tired to get away from it.

“I could never kill anyone”

His eyes were pleading “I’ll feel better if I know you and Sera have something to keep animals away”

“All right” She took the hateful thing.

He smiled at her, then pulled Sera into his arms.

“Be a good girl for your new big sister ok?”

The little blonde girl smiled brightly at her older brother.

“I will.”

She went over in her head the day they had met.

She had wondered out of the house after her Aunt had died of the sickness.

Days for waiting and watching was the old woman coughed blood bubbling in her nose and mouth.

At last she died and Hannah had left the house in a daze.

She walked pointlessly for a few hours until she was hopelessly lost

Numb and dazed she wondered into a hollowed out market.

There she had found sera and Jason.

They had been happy for a while. until the sun went out.

Jason had fought the snow to get them to an old hotel then soon after he had left them.

Sometimes when Jason held her tightly she thought he loved her. other times that he was just looking for a way and a reason to go..

But none of that mattered now …

Her mind swirled like the snow around and back to what she feared

To what she dint want to think about

To what she could not face

Her guilt consuming her the tears rolling down her numb cheeks

But unbidden that morning came back to her

Sera had asked to play in the snow and wanting to give the poor child some happiness she said yes.

Hannah had just went inside to get her paints when she hared Sera’s scream.

She garbed the gun and ran outside to help and was attacked from the side the gun spinning from her hand.

Holding Sera were a pack of savages but the worst thing was under the madness and torn rags she could see they were normal…just twisted from loss and pain.

One the leader looked like he could have been a teacher once

The leader pulled out a gas can and shoved Sera down to the ground.
“Oh sun oh holy mother hiding from us now take this sacrifice and come back to us.”

Hannah broke free at last but she was much to late Sera screamed over and over as the flames licked her flesh her blonde hair going up like a candle.

Hannah at last got the gun.

She saved the leader for last

“WHY YOU CRAZY FUCK WHY??”

“her blonde hair…bring out the sun..”

She knew there was no answers in his madness but the grin smile on her face as the tears and blood mingled was beautiful to behold.

After she could move she went over to sera held the charred broken body in her arms rocked back and forth as if the child was alive and had a nightmare.

“I love you little sister “ she said over and over

“I love you”

After a while she had went inside with the corpse and now she waited for Jason.

Her head jerked up as she hared a sound

“Hannah?”

Jason’s eyes widen as he took in her blank stare and his sister’s dead from in her arms.

He ran out into the snow

Hours later Hannah put sera down an went to find him he was frozen in the ground

She lay down next to him and dint feel cold. not at all..

The girl gasped awake.

“How did you sleep Hannah?” asked the man sitting next to her

She rolled over to look at him.
“How would you sleep if every dream you had was a possible end of the world sergeant Redman?”

“No need to get snotty Hannah”

“How did it end?”

“The sun went out”

“Thank you Hannah your doing a great thing for your fellow man..”

“We cant let it all end now can we?”

Then he put her back to sleep…
