Chapter 1
"I want that one."
"No, he's mine."
"If the two of you don't shut up, he'll hear you, and then neither of you gets him. Anyway, we all contribute to the Change, you know that...And, since I am in charge, Mara, you get the first taste." I opened my jacket and removed the silk-wrapped wine glass from the inner pocket, and held it up to the moonlight. The small glimmer on the side of the glass caught and reflected in the hungry eyes surrounding me as the seven of us prepared for the night's feast and new membership to our exclusive "club".
She leapt, her long black coat trailing behind her as she dove towards the man below us. Just as she reached him though, time seemed to stop as a man dressed in even more black than we were, save for his bare chest, stepped from the shadows and fired the shotgun he held in his hand. " Y'know, for 'silent' killers, you damn thing never shut the hell up, do you?"
His shot blinded me, so I saw nothing of Mara after she was forced into the shadows of the alley by the blast. I heard our victims heart begin to beat faster as he scrambled to escape the alleyway, then cease.
"Come on, she went down easy. I need a real challenge."
I had no time to think further on the other man as three of my companions jumped down to take him up on his offer. He drew a long, silver blade and dove into their midst as they landed on the ground. Fang and steel flashed equally bright throughout the struggle. Leos, Ferrus, and Datstara fought hard to take down the hunter, harder than one single human should have warranted. As the fight dragged on, it was obvious that this hunter was attempting to get closer to the man lying in the shadows. When they finally reached him, the hunter grabbed him by the arm, only to drop him when he saw that the man's neck was torn open, and blood covered his face and chest. "Dammit, lost another one. You win this time." He turned from our company and fled deeper into the night. The three of us that had remained on the roof dropped to meet our compatriots. "Well done, all of you, especially Mara...you can come out now, my dear." Roxie and Aleda followed my gaze into the alley, going in to retrieve our fallen friend. As they emerged, I would have been embarassed for her, had she had anything but blood and bone left beneath the tattered remains of her now shredded shirt, though it was slowly healing. "You are lucky this guy ran straight to you when he panicked. We have to hurry if either of you is to live on though." I took the glass out of her hand and pressed my nail to my palm, draining some of my Vitae into it, then passing thr glass on to each one of us, ending with Mara, where I placed the goblet to her lips, and poured the blood down her throat. "Now then, for the original intent of this night." I took her hand in my free hand, and opened a small wound, placing the cup beneath it to capture the blood, now temporarily tinged with the power or all of us present, then turned to the man that now lay at our feet and offered him the glass. "Hard night, man? could I ask your name?" I said, as he seized the cup greedily and gulped it down. "Riordan" then he was once again unconcious.
