Opposites Attract

This is an original story written in a two person exachange, one person playing the Robyn, another playing Donovan. I hope to rewrite it into a more standard novel form (if people think that is a better way to write it.)

This story was written my myself and Fantasia Wild. Let us know what you think of it by reviewing it.

Robyn Kumar walked slowly down the school corridor one last time. The kindergarten was being shut down, "Not enough money my ass!" She had snapped at the board members but that had done no good, they closed "Little Angels" kindergarten and daycare. As she got to the door she stopped and took a deep breath, "Memories," she mumbled then left.

Her career was not supposed to have ended like that. She was supposed to have had continued success in her field. Robyn sat in her Volkswagen Passat and wondered where she was going and what she was going to do. She then started the engines and headed home dreading the long job search that lay ahead.

Life had not been easy for Robyn. She had to fight for everything. Then came the day she got married. Chad Sinclaire was the best thing that had happened to her; until she came home one day and the cops were dragging him away, “This is crazy!” she yelled, “What’s the charge?” one of the cops stopped, “child porn, kidnapping, unlawful confinement, assaulting a police officer, should I continue?” he said to her. Robyn only shook her head. “Sorry lady, but your husband is a certified pervert.”

She should have seen it coming. He had changed all the locks on doors leading down and into the basement and he was the only one with keys to them. He had bought a brand new computer and brought down there. He used to lock himself down there for hours on weekends.

Donovan Snipes threw the glass against the wall and it shattered. A voice came from the front of the bar. "Donovan if you do that again I'm charging you for it." He ignored the comment from the bartender and went back to the manila envelope that was in front of him. The contents dumped on the table in front of him; a stack of papers, a small locket, and three pictures. He picked up the first picture, a nice picture of a young black woman, probably in her mid twenties. He wondered how a woman as beautiful as this became mixed up with Micheal Christenson. He dropped the picture and picked up the second one. This picture was of the same woman, but now she was bruised and beaten; lying on a white bed of a hospital. According to the doctor's report, she had been raped and beaten repeatedly. There were marks where she had been tied down to a bed for many days. She had barely survived.

The picture was three weeks old, and Donovan had been on the trail of her attacker. A single strand of hair matched one of a convicted felon, Micheal Christian. Now Donovan had to find him.

Donovan picked up the glass next to him. He had been on the tail of this guy for two weeks and almost caught him once, but the man slipped away. Donovan had to find him before he struck again. The psychiatric report said that the man had all the signs of a serial killer. It was just a matter of time.

He ran his fingers through his short crop hair and then ran them through his goatee. His face around his goatee was growing out. He had been so involved with the chase that he had been forgetting just about everything else.

The folder, in addition with the rest of the documents, held the name the the local porn ring Micheal was in. Perhaps one of them had some idea to his location. He scanned through the half dozen names as if one would just jump out at him. Donovan swirled the fire water around in the shot glass and poured it down his throat. ~Won't do me any good staying here,~ he thought and dropped some money on the table, with an extra five for the glass he broke. He picked up his hat and walked out the door, towards his car.

Robyn walked into her house and pressed play on her voicemail. Same old bullshit. Tele-marketers mostly. She erased the messages and headed for the kitchen. She grabbed a beer out of the fridge and slumped down on a chair to go through the bills she had picked up from the mail box.

Donovan looked at the first name on the sheet of paper. It read Chad Sinclaire, 9834 Chestnut Drive. Donovan put down the paper and shifted his Ford into gear headed to the house. The paper said he was out on parole for his offences, and Donovan thought he could persuade the perv to give up any info he had on Micheal.

Robyn had just finished going over the bills and paying what she could over the phone when her door bell rang. She looked up from her plate of rice and chicken and frowned as she saw the time, “Who the hell could that be?” she wondered. She got up and walked to the door, “May I help you?”

The house looked nice, for some reason he thought it would have been more of a dump considering the person who came out of it. When the door opened, his gaze fell onto a black woman. “Hello Miss, my name is Detective Snipes. Is this the residence of Mr. Chad Sinclaire?”

“It used to be,” she said, “What do you want?”

“I was informed that he was out on parole. This was his last address; I thought I could find him here.” If he wasn’t on parole, it wouldn’t be the first time that there had been a mix-up in paperwork.

“Please tell me you’re joking,” Robyn said, “come in,” she told him as she stepped aside allowing him entrance. When he came in she closed the door behind him, “Would you like a drink or something to eat? I was just having supper.”

He stepped into the house, it was a nice looking place, and again it surprised him. “No, thanks though.”

She offered him a seat before sitting across from him, “My ex-husband cannot be out on parole. They told me that I would have been informed before anything like that happened because I testified against him in his trial. Chad is not up for paroled for the next eight years.”

“Well, it wouldn’t be the first time that paperwork got messed up. Though it was pretty early for him to be released.” Donovan cursed himself for not realizing that sooner.

She smiled, “You sure you won’t like something to drink?” she asked, “Don’t worry I wont poison you or anything.”

“A glass of water would be fine miss.” Donovan pulled the manila folder out from under his jacket so he could sit and took a seat on the couch.

Robyn walked into the kitchen and poured some filtered water in a glass with some ice then walked back. She handed it to him and took her seat again, “So,” she said crossing her legs, “Why are you looking for Chad?”

Wetting his lips, he wondered how much he should tell her, both because he didn’t want to give too much away, but also because he didn’t wan to hurt the woman anymore than she already was. “He appears to be connected to an unrelated incident. We are attempting to interview a number of people for information, including Chad.”

“All them perves stick together huh?” she asked, “Am sorry I didn’t mean to sound cynical. I just wish that Chad and his sick little mind games and his little side jobs would just go away, but they follow you. Well I don’t know where he is if he’s not in jail. Do you have any questions for me?”

“I’ve read his case file. If you werposeposed to half the things that he did, then you don’t have any reason to apologize. I do have some questions that maybe you could answer. This isn’t an interrogation, so if you don’t want to answer, then you don’t have to.”

“If,” Robyn spat, “You cops are all alike. I lived in this damn house with a child molester and pervert for four years! You don’t think that’s rattling? You try and do it.”

“I can’t even begin to understand what you went through.” Donovan shook his head thinking about what he read about Chad. “Did Chad ever mention a man by the name of Micheal Christenson?”

Robyn thought about the name but couldn’t remember. “Chad didn’t tell me about his friends. I tend to come home to notes or he would call my cell and leave messages saying where he was going but not with whom. If you want to find out who they are, go to the Village bar and grill...that’s where they spent their time.”

Donovan scratched the name of the place down on the back of the manila envelope. “Thanks. Do you know if he had any other plathatthat he went to beside from the Village Bar and Grill? Perhaps he mentioned something, an address, or a building? I’m trying to find some place where they might have taken someone.” Donovan wanted to prod her memory, but he might have gone too far with why he wanted to know.

“No,” Robyn said slowly then stopped. There was one other place, “Wait a minute…I cant remem…I wish I could remember… There was this one other place but I can’t remember it.”

“Its pretty important, is there some way to find out? Maybe something around the house that he would have written it down in, or maybe a third person I could talk to?” If she knew a place maybe Donovan could finally get ahead of that son of a bitch and take him down.

Robyn shook his head. “Everyone stopped talking to me after Chad’s arrest,” she stopped, “If I think of something is there a way to get a hold of you?”

Donovan reached into his jacket and pulled out his business card. He was a little disappointed that he couldn't get more out of the lovely lady, but perhaps she would remember and call him. He held out the card for her to take.

“Thank you,” she said as she took the card. Her mind was still buzzing trying to remember where the place was or what hit was called, “If there is nothing…” She stopped as she heard a sound. She walked into the kitchen to see water blowing through the window, “Oh great,” she muttered, ‘Its raining like hell out there,” she called to him.

Donovan turned and watched her walk away. "It’s ok. Only rain. I won't melt." Donovan stood up and returned the manila envelope to the inside of his jacket.

"Yah," Robyn said as she fought with the window to drag it shut, "I wouldn’t send my worst enemy out in this ...no wait. If it was Chad I would wouldn’t even a second thought.." She smiled then and continued to fight to close the window against the wind.

Donovan walked into the kitchen. "Let me help you with that." He walked up behind Robyn and reached around her as he grasped the window sash and helped her pull it down. "That's better."

Robyn's whole body tensed as his touched her. Pictures of Chad flashed in her head and she felt as though she was going to throw up. She took a deep breath and pushed her body toward the sink and away from contact with his.

Donovan felt her shutter. He pushed himself away from her. "Uh... I'm real sorrss. ss. I didn't mean to disturb you." He felt terrible and figured it was best if he just got ready to leave.

"Its fine," she said softly as she peeled her body off the sink. ~What the hell is wrong with you~ her head snapped at her ~he just helped you close the window~ she frowned outwardly but looked up at Donovan, "Thank you for your help detective."

"Certainly miss. If you think of anything, please give me a call." He turned and walked towards the door.

"I will," she said as she watched him leave. It was crazy the way she had reacted to him. She walked to the door behind him, "Thank you for stopping by."

As he reached the door, Donovan put his fedora hat on and tipped it at her. "Good evening, miss," he said and walked out into the rain, headed for his car. He had a feeling that he would be seeing her again.

Robyn watched him go then closed the door behind him. She then put the chain lock in place and looked around the room. She then headed upstairs. She felt dirty. She stepped into the bath tub and turned the water on with her cloths still on. She lifted her face up to the downpour and closed her eyes.

Donovan climbed into his car and threw his hat onto the passenger seat next to him. He figured the best place to go next would be to the Village Bar, so he fired up his car and headed in that direction.

After her fully clothed shower, Robyn stepped out of her bathroom and stripped. She then ran a towel over her body to dry herself and dragged a brush hurriedly through her hair. She then dropped the towel on the ground and crawled into bed. She pulled the blankets up to her neck and stared at the ceiling. She had bought a whole new house. Well the furniture at least. She wanted nothing that Chad had touched.
