Chapter One- A Surprised Attack
The sun shone brightly across the valley, reflecting off of the stream that flowed through the middle, beyond the freshly green, rolling hills. Anna could see the heat lingering a yard or so off the ground and could feel it on the tips of her toes, as she continued to ride barreling on through the late afternoon, only stopping to fill her canteen of water.
Anna had been riding all day since sunset and her buttocks were now numb, her inner sides of her legs were raw and even the slightest touch sent off pain through her lower body. If she would have had time, she would have worn her riding pants, but after fully comprehending her where she was and why she was hiding, Anna was scared out of her mind. Anna held tightly onto her nap sack with one hand, while struggling to locate her water canteen in the bag with her other hand. With no luck in doing so, she came to a halt and stepped down from her horse. Her knees buckled from beneath her, for she hadn’t walked around for a very long time. Anna drew the nap sack from her right shoulder, her long, auburn, now tangled hair catching on the strap of the sack. Anna yanked on the resisting sack in frustration and strands of hair were pulled from her sunburned scalp as the sack was finally freed from her hair. Anna grunted as she rose her hand to her head. Not only had her head become sunburned, but her bare shoulders had been exposed to the sun as well.
Anna rose the nearly empty canteen to her cracked lips, savoring the last few drops remaining. The little amount of water did not in the least bit quench her thirst. Dehydration had already taken a toll on Anna. She became weak and groggy, so walking to the nearest stream was not an easy task, but Anna continued on hoping that freedom would prevail.
It was because of her crooked father’s past and actions that caused her to hide and escape from her village. Word was out to all the soldiers loyal to Monsieur Safarge, a man that controlled almost all the land of Sieve Valley, that anyone going by the family name of Orwell is to be captured and sent to Defarge to face further consequences. Death and shame would soon become of family’s name. Anna was not certain of what her father had done. She hadn’t even seen him long enough to kiss him and her mother goodbye. Her last father’s words w “Ru “Run, my dear, run away to a safe place. God bless you my child,” and soon after they were both taken away by Safarge\'s men, but Anna had luckily escaped unnoticed, or so she had thought. It turned out that indeed Defarge had not forgotten about her. Door by door, they tore each house inside out searching for Anna, but she was nowhere to be found. The people of the village begged for mercy, as some were lined up outside their homes, as the soldiers demanded information of Anna’s hiding place. But none knew of where she was, for she hid in the woods without telling a soul. Anna watched as the woman, children, and men were slaughtered, a knife through pierthrothrough their chests. Anna closed her eyes, tears strolling heavily down her cheeks. With a great surge of courage, Anna began riding through the woods on her horse, Twister, listening to the screams of the innocent people being killed because of her.
Now, nearly three days later, the heavy burden of guilt hung heavy on Anna’s shoulders. She wiped the visions of the past few days out of her head and concentrated on finding water, before she passed out from the heat.
Dusk drew and Anna finally found a rather large stream flowing quickly out in the open. Anna let out the first sigh of relief and tied Twister up to a tree and hurriedly kicked of her thin leather shoes, while grabbing her canteen and carrying it along with her to the edge of the water. The coolness of the water was soothing on her sore toes and she walked further into the water. Anna didn’t bother pulling up her dress as she bent down to coup her hands in the water, bringing as many handfuls of water to her mouth as she could. After her thirst was satisfied, she splashed the cool water on her face before filling up her canteen. Anna reluctantly left the pool of water and headed back toward Twister, so he could get a drink of water as well, before continuing on riding. She didn’t know where she was going, but she had to get as far away from her village as soon as possible.

Derek had gave word out that he was going to find some water, as his other men lazily spread out on the ground, grunting from their sore muscles and rumbling stomachs.
“The faster we find this woman, the faster we get paid and fed boys,” yelled a man with a thick beard and greasy hair.
“I’ll drink to that one. I haven’t had a decent meal for three days! What’s with this moldy bread eh? I would rather feed this to the damn dogs then eat it myself. We ought to be fed red meat boys, not this garbage. When I get back I’ll give Defarge a piece of my mind! How about it boys!” another stocky man yelled.
“Yeah, you do that and you’ll be killed, you fool!” the first man snarled.
Derek rolled his eyes at his ignorant men. They knew little about combat and sure the hell didn’t know about survival and will power. Instead, they constantly thought about when their next meal was and when they were going to get a cold beer.
His canteen was low on water, as so was the other soldiers. They had stopped twice already today, slowing down their progress. He didn’t go along with the killing of the entire family, but he didn’t know if the woman they were after had anything do with what happened. Derek was not even told of what the Orwell family had done, but it must have been serious if all his men were searching for the last of the family. He was told however, that the mother and father were hanged.
Derek came to a clear opening in the woods and peered over at the stream lying in the middle, its reflection from the setting sun almost blinding him, but a slight movement caught his glimpse. Derek quickly looked into the direction of the rustle and saw the most beautiful woman he had even seen. Yes, this was the woman he was to bring back to Defarge. Derek grasped his sword and began walking toward the woman, not thinking to tell his other men that he had found her.
