Bring It Onskie!
11:57 PM, May 11
Island Nation Caspiar, Caspian Sea
Isaac’s eyes darted nervously about. “There’s never a fucken stick,” he swore under his breath, “around to bite when you need one.” Tightening the tourniquet around his ankle the searing pain made his head jerk. Then turning to his younger brother, between gasps, he asked. “Alex, give me your med pack.”
Impassively, Alex handed it over, before turning pale when he saw the front half of Isaac ’s foot had been chewed off.
Isaac grimaced as he jabbed himself in the leg with a morphine syringe. After applying more tape to the bloody pressure bandage on his stomach. He put his hand out. “Now give me your rifle.”
“I will come back for you,” Alex said, slowly handing over his Kalashnikov, his voice was full of forlorn hope and desperation. “There’s only one magazine left.”
“That’s okay, mine’s empty.” Isaac grinned. “Don’t stop to talk to any pretty girls.” Staring him in the eye, he firmly squeezed his brother’s shoulder. “The Queen is in danger. Go!”
Wiping muddy tears from his eyes, he brandished a pistol and his combat knife. Alex nodded his head solemnly before disappeared down the trail.
Looking up at the clouds that hid the full Moon, Isaac cast aside his broken night goggles. “Even without Infrared, those damn things see well enough.” Closing his eyes, he froze. There was a deathly, unforgiving silence filling the air, interrupted only by the beat of his heart. After counting to twenty, he could just barely make out the ravine’s shear walls beyond the underbrush.
Knowing it was humanly impossible for his pursuers to get around him, he hesitated before rolling painfully around. Reaching into his backpack, Isaac removed a signal flare. Igniting it with a defiant jerk, he threw it three of four meters back up the path. Suddenly shades of gray disappeared. He found himself in a tenuous island of light surrounded by a sea of pitch black.
Snapping Alex’s rifle to his shoulder, the loss of blood made it difficult to concentrate. Yet the darkness seemed strangely familiar as he shook his head unsuccessfully to clear the cobwebs.
It didn’t seem the least bit strange when suddenly his brother was lying next to him. It was perfectly normal that Alex was a boy of eleven again.
“Remember when we skipped school to go to the cinema?” Alex asked, looking off into the distance.
Isaac nodded his head. “Yeah, we’d lost track of time and missed the last trolley. We were terrified father would find out.”
“The sky was pitch black, just like tonight.” Alex groaned, rubbing his stomach. “Remember the long run home, we must of barfed up buckets of ice cream and candy.”
“And when we finally got there, father was waiting with his strap.”
“It was my fault, I talked you into going,” Alex said remorsefully, his voice fading away.
Just then, the sudden report of six rapid shots, followed immediately by the explosion of two hand grenades came from down the trail. Isaac ’s mouth dropped open. Jerking around, he almost fainted. “Damn it all to Hell! How the devil did they get past me?”
He tried unsuccessfully to get up, until a scream sent a chill up his back. After the death cry finished rebounding from the canyon walls, only menacing silence remained. The silence was horrifying, that is, until the ominous sound of heavy breathing, coming from both front and behind, made him almost soil his underwear. He clenched his teeth.
“I surrender…I’ll tell you everything!” he shouted. His body shook painfully. Finally struggling to his feet, he threw his rifle next to the sputtering flare. “I’m unarmed, don’t shoot.”
In the flares dying light, he saw three pairs of bloodshot eyes. Approaching on two legs, their claws and fangs appeared even more menacing. Knowing his body was failing, he tried to summon ever ounce of hatred still in him. Letting them get within 4 meters, he jerked his arms up. Empting Alex’s rifle thunderously at full automatic, he simultaneously threw a grenade in the other direction. Suddenly there was blinding white light, but the absence of any noise surprised him as he was knocked flat.
Isaac shook, unable to hear anything. Struggling to one elbow, he saw white smoke rising from where the flare had been. But just then he realized he wasn’t alone. ‘I’m sorry little brother, I couldn’t take this beating for you,’ Isaac lamented holding his last grenade above his head, before pulling the pin.
