Chapter 1: Behind Blue Eyes
The sun was just starting to heat the concrete outside on this beautiful spring day and Destiny wished hopefully that time in this dread place would go faster. She pulled off her glasses slowly and took to cleaning them a second before placing them back on her round face. Her eyes were a dull blue with a slight remnants of that days make-up left on them. Her lips were sparkling with a cinnamon-colored lip gloss from constant reapplication.
She wore black work pants and dress shoes with a tucked in blue button-up shirt. A red logo of a VHS tape was on the front and a tight script saying ‘Lotsa Flicks’ was filled in with golden thread. Her short hair dropped into her face sporadically, some strands auburn, some blonde, making it somewhat less apparent that she was so pale. Her build wasn’t what you could call skinny, nor was it obese, it was more somewhere in the middle.
‘Andrea’ Destiny called through the empty store, after turning from a large stack of DVDs.
“Yeah?” A perky voice called from a nearby store room.
“While the store’s empty, I’m going to run these, okay?”
“Yeah, that’s fine.” The voice said, getting closer, and finally a taller girl emerged from the doorway holding a box of clear plastic VHS boxes. “I’ll be up here getting the New Releases ready, then.” The girl, Andrea, had green eyes and braces. She wore no make-up and was naturally pretty. Her long, brown, curly hair was pulled up into a severe ponytail and it was apparent she was wound slightly tight.
Nodding at Andrea, Destiny walked off with the DVDs to the A section of the new release wall, leaving her shift manager to deal with the customers for a little while.
All around the store she walked, at a medium pace, trying both to not get back to the cash register to slowly, but not wanting to get there too soon either. Then, finally, slipping the last case into it’s place she waltzed back up to the counter.
“Any customers?” Destiny asked shortly, worried more about the ache building up in her feet, rather then anyone who wanted to rent ‘Daddy Day Care’ or ‘Freaky Friday’.
Andrea looked up from a list and shook her head. “No,” she said with a glance at the clock, “It’s getting late for customers to be here on a nice day, there won’t be many more.”
Destiny nodded, smiling weakly, just as the door beeped. Startled by the sudden noise, Destiny turned to see who it was. It was a man around the age of 20 or 19, not much older than her.
“Hello,” she said, mustering up a semi-greeting. Not really looking at him much.
“Um, yeah.” the man said, “Jamie wanted me to come in and see when I start. Is he in?”
Destiny wrinkled her brow slightly. “No,” she said, “Andrea? You know anything about it?”
As Andrea stood to talk to the man, Destiny took a step back to assess. The man looked so familiar, she just couldn’t put her finger on it. Where had she seen him? It was right in the front of her brain.
Then it hit her, “James?” she said, “James Hand? You know Thomas right?” Thomas was an old high school friend of hers who she had recently lost contact with. She remembered the man from a few high school dances, he’d been a wall flower. But, she could not forget his eyes. They were the lightest blue color that she had ever seen.
“Yes, that’s me.” James said, “I know you. I talked to you on the phone a couple times when you called Thomas.” He smiled her direction.
“Right. Right.” She said happily, momentarily forgetting her weariness, “So, you’ll be working here then?” She asked, trying not to sound to enthused. She didn’t want to come off as desperate. It was just, flash backs of the first time she seen those eyes were coming back to her. She had talked about them all night after that. She had to know that boy’s name. Unfortunately, she was in a relationship then and also lacked the necessary courage to have asked the boy his phone number anyway.
Now, it was 3 years later and he was here, in her workplace, telling her that he’d be working there with her. She knew it had to be a sign of some kind.
“Yes, I’ll be here on…” He told her, and paused to look at the slip of paper he now held, “Monday. Uh, I mean, tomorrow.” He laughed slightly and went back to talking to Andrea about the job.
Taking advantage of the fact that no one was in the store and there was nothing left to do, she gave James a once-over. He had lost quite a few pounds since lastlast seen him, nothing wrong with that at all. His eyes were still a gorgeous blue. He had grown more facial hair and had a nice goatee working for him. It was brown, like his hair, which was short and messy. It was possible that the adjective sexy could even be used here.
Taking just enough time to glance away from him to the clock she saw that it was time for her to hit the road. “Oh, Andrea, um, I’m jetting, okay? It’s my out time.” She said, happily and quickly.
“No, go ahead.” Andrea said as Destiny already had her name signed out on the time clock.
Quickly, Destiny unbuttoned her blue shirt and pulled off her name tag, revealing a red belly shirt with a KoRn logo on it. Then, she grabbed the restroom key and took off toward the back. Inside, she took off her work pants and shoes and took her blue jeans and boots from the top shelf she kept them on in the bathroom. She changed quickly, reapplied her eyeliner and rushed

James was gone when she reached the front, so with a shrug she said goodbye to Andrea and skipped out the front door. Finally, she felt free as she walked in her normal clothes out of her retched place of work and over to her canary yellow Volkswagen Beetle and unlocked the trunk and set her work clothes in, removing her CD player and case. She then, ed ted the trunk, went around to unlock her door and got in.
With a yawn and a stretch, she rolled the window down and snapped on magnmagnetic shades to her glasses. Then, she put her key in the ignition started the car and opened her CD case to flip through the CDs. After she flipped through a few, she was startled by a knock on her car door. She gasped and dropped her CDs on the floor.
Looking over, she saw it was James. “Oh,” she said to him, catching her breath and picking up her CDs, “It’s you.”
His blue eyes glittered in the sun as he smiled at her. “Yeah,” he said calmly, “It’s me.”
Something in his voice made he look over sharply and his eyes caught hers. All was silent for the next few minutes, but nervousness caused Destiny to cough.
“Um, so,” Destiny asked him, “Did you, uh, what something?”
James shrugged “Not really. Just came over to say hi. Do you, uh, got a boyfriend?” He asked, she thought, nonchalantly.
Returning the vagueness of his question, she said “No, I just got out of a two year relationship.”
He nodded slowly, looking as if he were interested in her every syllable. “Oh, that’s cool. Well,” he sighed, “I’ve got to be going. I’ll catch you later.”
With a last glance into her eyes, he turned and walked toward a beat-up, red Mazda truck. Rust spots made up most of the paint job and covered most of the metal. His back window looked as if one bump would cause a need of new glass and had 4:20 shaped into it with gray duct tape. Not the classiest guy, but smooth nonetheless.
She watched him drive away and looked back down at her CDs. Picking one, she popped it in her CD player and backed out of the parking lot to head toward home.
