Soul Collector
Evian stared up into the angry face of the large man looming over him from his position on the floor, the man stared down at him with glowing red eyes, his face was twisted in a mask of anger, he slowly circled the small form huddled on the floor in front of him, tapping his large staff against the cold cement floor as he walked, his booming voice finally broke the silence in the room.
“Evian! This is the 5th time this month you’ve let one escape, do you understand what happens when they escape? It sets everything off balance and could literally unravel the very threads of existence and not to mention it makes the rest of us look bad!” He slammed the heavy staff against the floor with a loud thud causing Evian’s small form to jump. “We’re just about at the end of our rope with you but we’re willing to give you one more chance to redeem yourself, take the amulet and collect the souls, there are only 5 souls on your quota which even you shouldn’t screw up but if you do manage some how to screw this up then we’ll no longer have need of you and you’re soul will be sent back to the hall of lost souls where it will remain for eternity, is that clear? Oh and if you haven’t collected the souls before the amulet turns clear then you will also fail. Go!”
Evian stood from the floor and took the small amulet, he slipped the chain around his neck and was quickly enveloped into a large white light, he could feel his ethereal form being pulled up by a tremendous force and all he could do was close his eyes as he was thrust back into the realm of the living, when he felt the pulling stop he opened his eyes and realized he was standing on a street, he merely stared as people passed him by seemingly not noticing him and he had to remind himself that it was of course because they couldn’t see him as he was still in his ethereal form, he was merely one of a thousand roaming spirits passing people by without their knowledge until he took on a physical form which he would have to find himself, he couldn’t take on his form he had when he had been alive and even he was permitted to he couldn’t remember it anyway, he couldn’t remember anything of his life but he knew he had killed himself and thus forced to remain a pitiless soul collector for eternity, he didn’t mind taking some of the souls those who were ready to go usually welcomed him, the elderly would often raise their arms to him and he would gently take them by the hand and lead their souls to the gates where they would await final judgement and the terminally ill would often do the same, he could hear them begging for him long before he even reached them and they too would follow him with ease and happiness, he often witnessed a peace and comfort in their eyes that he wished could only belong to him but what he hated were those that hadn’t expected to go so soon and those who had a hard time letting go of their mortal life the worst were the children. He remembered once when he’d been called upon to collect the soul of a small 4 year old girl, he floated about the top of the small confines of the hospital room watching as the girls mother held her small hand begging for her to live, she looked so tiny and fragile, her small body was covered with tubes and monitors, he gently floated down and placed a small kiss on her small forehead, immediately the machines let out a loud long beep and he gently took her hand and her her soul to the gates as they floated away from the hospital, his tears mingled with those of a million more soul collectors who cried for the lost souls pelted the earth in a cold shower of rain.
The glowing amulet around his neck broke him from his reverie and he knew he had to find a physical form quickly, he hated when he had to actually stay in the physical realm to collect the souls but he knew he would have too this time as it could take him awhile to collect the souls he needed, and if he didn’t hurry up and get started then he would fail again and the thought of being trapped in the hall of lost souls for eternity was enough to get him moving, he floated along the street until his eyes came into contact with a small magazine stand on the corner, he scanned the various covers searching for an image until he finally settled on one. There was an image of a beautiful boy with long blond hair, flawless skin and bright blue eyes on his back were of a pair of large white wings which Evian decided he would have to leave out unless he wanted to look suspicious, he studied the features of the image he’d chosen carefully making sure to get them exactly right before disappearing into an alley, he closed his eyes and formed the image of the angel in his mind, he concentrated all his strength and powers onto the image and he could feel skin starting to enclose his form, he began to tingle and finally he could feel the weight of the pavement beneath his feet, he opened his eyes and studied himself, the long blond hair felt light and soft as it trailed down his back resting against the back of his knees, he ran his fingers through it and decided he liked how it felt soft and silky against his fingers, he studied his long slender fingers flexing them a few times to get the feel of his new physical vessel, he would be traveling around in it for awhile so he figured he might as well get used to it, he then took a few timid steps almost tripping up on the large, platform boots that enclosed his feet, he paced around the alley for awhile until he became confident in his ability to control his physical body and stepped from the alley, he glanced at the magazine stand across the street and decided to grab a copy of the magazine he’d gotten the image from, after all he wanted to learn more about the image. He grabbed the magazine from the shelf and proceeded to walk away with it clutched safely under his arm when a voice stopped him.
“Hey you! What are you doing? You didn’t pay for that!” Evian turned and gave the man a quizzical look, until he started to realize that humans paid for things but he didn’t remember how, when he’d died he lost all knowledge of the physical world and as a soul collector he never needo beo be reminded, he usually remained within the ethereal realm when he collected souls and usually on rare occasions such as this when he was forced to remain in the physical world a guardian was sent along with him but since he was here to prove himself he had no one to guide him, he would have to figure it all out elf.elf.
“What do you want for it?” He didn’t know why he even bothered with the question he didn’t have anything to give for it anyway, but before he could stop himself the words floated from his mouth.
“It’s $3.69 see it says so right there on the cover.” The man stared at him with an annoyed glare, he tapped his foot and waited for Evian to say something when he didn’t the man became even more agitated. “Well if you aren’t going to pay for it then put it back.” He jerked the magazine from Evian’s arms and harshly placed it back on the small shelf turning to tend to a paying customer.
Evian stared at the fat bald man, he thought about just sucking the man’s soul out right there on the street and lng hng his fat lifeless corpse with his precious magazines but he knew the punishment for taking unwarranted souls was worse than letting some escape and once again the thought of the hall of lost souls made him turn with a defeated sigh and walk away, he silently kicked a small rock down the street imaging it was the fat man’s lifeless body when he heard footsteps followed by a voice behind him.
“Hey wait! I think this is yours.” The man behind him held up the magazine he’d previously tried to get.
“I didn’t pay for it.” He stared into the man’s dark brown eyes with a questioning look.
“It’s okay it was only a few bucks I covered it. I consider it my good deed for the next few years.” He pushed the magazine into Evian’s arms and walked away, Evian watched the man with a bewildered look as he disappeared down the street and something in him screamed, go after him you idiot he’s your only lifeline here, the only one who was willing to help you without his help you’ll never get those souls and you’ll be trapped forever in the hall of lost souls, he knew the voice in his head was right this man was his only hope, he didn’t even know how to get a magazine much less survive here long enough to get his souls, he knew his physical body would need nourishment and shelter and he had no idea how to go about getting any of these things. He pushed the thoughts to the back of his brain and raced to catch up with the man who was already halfway down the street.
