The cool rain poured down on him, hitting his face and mixing with the streams of salty sweat and blood that formed at his hairline and ran down across his sculpted nose and broad chin. He could taste his own blood on his lips as he looked down at the limp figure in his arms. Hot, dark plasma still seeped from the body and he could still feel her heart faintly beating against his chest. The pumps of the organ he once arrogantly thought belonged to him slowly subsided as she died there in his arms at the edge of the bridge. Sean lowered his head in an attempt to kiss the lips of his forbidden and adulterous lover one last time. He crushed his lips against hers, which were swiftly draining of the rosy pink color he had once loved so much, and with that he dropped his load off the bridge and into the raging current below. The body plunged beneath the surface and the water quickly turned from its usual white crested blue to a dark blood red. Then as quickly as the river had darkened it changed back again, like Sean never would. He could taste her blood mingling with his own as a result of his final kiss. Sean could hear the sirens coming to avenge her death and prepared to jump and join her in her watery grave but couldn’t. He couldn’t because against his own will Sean began to remember the first night they met, in this exact place.
The early morning rays of light had just begun to filter across the bridge when Sean reached the end. He was returning from his then ex-girlfriend’s house. He had been with Sharon since he moved to the town, he’d met her at the record store when they both reached for the same record, it had been classic. Now he realized though that romance was an illusion because no one was perfect. He was in quite a turbulent mood after their fight when he saw a silhouette standing calmly at the edge of the concrete bridge. Sean immediately recognized the figure to be that of a woman. Her body was tense and tall as she prepared to throw herself to her destiny. He wondered for a moment if he wouldn’t like to join her but quickly rid of that thought. Sean pulled up near her and turned of the engine of his rusted old Chevy pick-up. He opened the door and stepped out into the windy atmosphere, closing the door not so quietly behind him. The noise startled the girl and almost sent her over the edge of the bridge.
“Don’t come any closer,” she warned in a voice that to Sean was sweet like honey and rich as cream, “I’ll jump!” Sean paused to consider this for a second “No you won’t.” he replied while taking a few tentative steps toward her, his shoes sounding hollowly against the pavement. Silence reverberated between them for a moment and then came an almost whispered “How do you know?” He thought, searching the vast crevasses of his mind for the perfect response. “You would’ve jumped by now then wouldn’t you? Plus, that crops not enough to kill you.” He took a few more measured steps forward, closing the distance between them. “You think so?” she asked thoughtfully, the question was more directed to herself then to Sean. Sean knew damn well that the fall would kill her and she would be instantly impaled by the sharp rocks hidden just below the crisp surface of the river. “Of course not, I’ve heard tale of a few who tried, injured but not dead.” He was now close enough to see her clearly in the faint rays of dawn light. For some reason, unknown to himself, Sean felt compelled to save her from herself.
She looked up at him, her dark, chocolate almond eyes half shadowed by her delicate eyelashes. Sweat was dripping from her brunette hairline and what was left of the moonlight mixed with the new sunlight and shone across her face complementing her ivory skin tone. Sean’s world stopped for a moment, he saw her moving her rosy pink lips, which were full and luscious and reminded him much of a rose, but heard nothing but the pounding of his own heart against his chest threatening to tear itself from his ribcage. The sound of a passing car brought him back to reality and he suddenly realized he hadn’t heard a word she said. “Sorry didn’t catch that, what did you say?” The woman gave him a slightly embarrassed look then in a quiet voice said “What are you doing here?” Sean inched a bit closer, he was close enough to reach her now, he must do this subtly. “I’m trying to save you.” He simply stated. Then Sean reached out and encircled her slender delicate wrist between his coarse thumb and forefinger and pulled her away from the edge of the bridge. She stumbled away not expecting the pull and fell against Sean. Though she stay there only a few moments Sean felt his world collide into place and felt complete for the first time in a long time. He forgot all about his ex-girlfriend Brittany and the fight they’d just had, he forgot his name, who he was, where he was, all Sean could think or feel was that her body against his and it felt perfect. She quickly backed away from him and her eyes filled with fury.
“Who the hell do you think you are, you don’t even know me and your preventing me from what I want to do. What the h….” her voice faded as Sean interrupted her. “Look I don’t know exactly what I’m doing here but sometimes people are brought into your life for a purpose and tonight my purpose was to prevent you from jumping off the edge of that bridge. I don’t know why it was my job but it was and there’s nothing I can do about it now. I will not let you kill yourself Mrs. Uh… sorry didn’t get your name.” She looked quite surprised at his outburst, she looked as though she couldn’t quite believe his excuse but agreed with it anyway. “Rhysenn… my names Rhysenn. What’s yours Mr. Hero?” She said her voice ringing with the sweetness of honey in his ears. “Sean Yung at your service Rhysenn. Do you have a last name?”
“That’s none of your business Mr. Young.”
“Actually its Yung and please call me Sean.”
“I’ll call you nothing as I’ll never see you again.” The words stung his insides; he couldn’t bear to live with out hearing that honey sweet voice and without getting lost in her caramel brown eyes. He had the urge to throw himself off that bridge just because of those few words. He didn’t know what it was he’d never been in some one else’s control like this before, he’d never lost hold of who he was before. Sean knew he had to find a way to make her say she’d see him again. “Look Rhysenn, where do you live, I’ll give you a ride home.”
“I will not ride with a stranger, who knows where you want to take me.”
“You are so full of yourself, I’ve known you for ten minutes and I can tell already. Don’t flatter yourself. I was offering you a ride home because its cold outside and who knows how long you’ve been standing there. By the time you get home you could be frozen to death and then my purpose for the night would be riddridden. So if you want a ride just get in the car.” With that Sean walked over to his pick-up and climbed into the drivers seat. He turned the key in the engine and adjusted the music that blasted through the speakers so that it no longer played Christmas music but rather “Brand New” and turned on the heater. When he put the car into drive he heard a soft creak and looked up to see Rhysenn’s slender build climbing into the other side of the vehicle.
Sean could now see her in the light of the truck and was quite surprised at her appearance. The light outside, which was slowly growing brighter, had not done her beauty justice. She wore a soft pink sweater that looked as if it couldn’t keep out the cold and a pair of faded blue jeans. The boots on her feet had not been tied as a result of her taking them off before preparing to jump. Her brown and honeysuckle colored hair made the honey flecks in her chocolate eyes stand out and sparkle like the morning dew. He couldn’t take his eyes off her and sat there looking at her for an eternity. “Well are you going to take me home?” she demanded. “Which way?” Sean asked. She directed him south, away from the bridge. “Buckle up.” He stated simply. Sean honestly wasn’t sure if he could drive in this state of mind.
The ride to Rhysenn’s house began quietly but ended in the reverse of that. He had driven past seaside way and turned on to listless drive when she carefully prodded him that he was going the wrong way. Sean, being the macho man that he was raised to be, forcefully replied that he knew where he was going. This quieted Rhysenn but as the sun raised and forced the shadows of night into retreat he found he didn’t know exactly where he was. Sean had only lived in the city a f a few weeks now; he was to start school in August and was quite unfamiliar with the city. It was hard enough getting around the rather large city with our Rhysenn sitting only a foot or so that he couldn’t concentrate. His pride wouldn’t let him admit that he had been wrong and he began to drive around the block repetitively. Rhysenn, however, noticed that they had passed by the same faded old corner store several times already and couldn’t help but inquire. “Mr. Yu… I mean Sean. Where are we? We’ve passed this Conoco quite a few times now.”
“Um… listen Rhysenn, I’m starting school here in a few weeks and I just moved here and I actually, well, um… I don’t know where we are.” He said the last part as quietly as he could muster. She sighed, “Stop at the corner store next time we pass by and I’ll go ask for directions.” He readily complied and pulled to a stop in front of the gas station.
Rhysenn leaped from the car, her joints aching to be stretched and walked swiftly and gracefully into the store to ask directions. Sean could barely think, barely breathe and all the while she had no clue about it. When she returned she slammed the door of the truck behind her with a bang and gazed at him with an evil look. “You turned the wrong way on listless, just like I told you. Here go right at the corner and I’ll direct you from there.” He felt completely dishonored but took it quite gracefully in an effort to appear unfazed by her confidence. “You know, shouldn’t you know where we are? You’ve lived here for a while right?”
“Well, yes but you see I don’t drive.”
“Your kidding me right? How old are you?”
“Eighteen, just like you I would assume if you’re starting at the university in a few weeks.”
“Yes, I’m eighteen. But why don’t you drive then?” Rhysenn appeared to be somewhat embarrassed at his comment and flushed a warm pink that complimented her skin tone and rosy lips. “Well, Danny does that. My chauffeur.”
“Ahh, a rich girl huh? Then shouldn’t you have all that you want? Why were you out on that bridge last night? Or rather this morning.” He immediately wished to retract his words and shove them right back into his brain when her face clouded with disgust and hatred. Rhysenn looked as though she could kill at that moment, as though she would’ve jumped last night had Sean not come along. “That’s none of your business Sean. Just turn left at the next light and we should arrive at my house.”
Sean had no intention of angering the woman further and followed her instructions wordlessly. When he pulled up to Rhysenn’s house he was surprised by it. Even though he knew she was rich he hadn’t expected this. There was a massive black iron gate guarding the way to the house complete with family emblem and guard post. He gave the guard his name and the information that he was giving young Rhysenn a ride home. The plump guard then wrinkled his pink nose in a disgusted look anudgiudgingly granted Sean entrance. He drove up the length of Primrose drive, the name given to her walkway, and stopped at the entrance to the massive house. “Thank you.” She said curtly and hopped from the truck, closing the door behind her. He watched her walk to the entryway with its white doors and golden knockers. She knocked on the door and a butler answered opening the door for her and exclaiming, no doubt, that she looked a wreck. Sean thought she looked perfect. When the door closed he drove back down the rose framed drive, the roses no doubt gave the walk it’s name, and asked the guard at the gate for a family name. “Quincy, sir.” The guard replied then closed the gate behind Sean with a loud creaking sound and waved him away.
