The Little Mermaid ( Remade )
Disclaimer: The original story does not belong to me. However, most of this is completely my own.
Warning: There are same sex pairings. And angst. But its pretty fluffy. And its also pretty stupid, written at the same time as Dee and Gee and Picture. It\'s really actually a combination of The Little Mermaid and East of the Sun, West of the Moon ( is that right? )
The Little Mermaid
Once upon a time, deep under the sea, in the legendary city of Atlantis, a little princess was born. Sure, you think you’ve heard the story, but this is the real one. The tiny baby bore the burden of the entire kingdom on her shoulders. She was the last child of the royal couple and the only surviving one. None of her siblings had survived the first few weeks. Her father’s strongest guards hovered over her cradle protectively. Little Aria was sheltered as much as possible. The years quickly passed. Aria hated being a princess. She had about 20 people hovering over her constantly. When she sat down to meals, everything on her plate had to be tasted before she could eat, for fear that it could be poisoned. Finally she convinced her parents to stop sheltering her as she was old enough by now. 15 years passed, and the suitors for her hand piled up.
She was to be married on her 16th birthday. The suitors stayed in the beautiful guest rooms along the west wing of the palace. Prince Ice, son of King Frost; Prince Death, son of King Hades; Prince Seraphim, son of King Angel; and Prince Justice, son of King Dragon were the 4 highest ranking suitors, not only in royalty but in the princess’s favor. How do I know so much about this? Well, because this is MY story. Yep, I’m Aria, Princess Aria, and no, I don’t die and become an immortal soul. That’s just a myth. And UNLIKE the Disney movie I don’t have red hair (well, not really), green eyes, a fish tail, and my father is not King Triton, his name is Aine. The world above is not just full of humans. Ice, Death, Seraphim, and Justice and I are not humans. We can shape shift, but our favorite forms are our almost human forms.
Why almost human, but not just quite? Because we still contain our powers no matter what form we take on. Ice has dark, dark, dark, brown hair, and deep blue icy eyes. Death has normal brown hair, but the normalness is made up for by the length and thickness of it, and he has blue-violet eyes, they switch color depending on how he’s feeling. Seraphim’s name compliments his looks. He has very light blond hair, and light blue-green eyes, which change color according to his mood, like Death. Justice is my relative, which explains why we look so alike.
We both have dark hair and black eyes. His hair is jet black and mine is black that has a blood red glare to it when the light hits it at the right angle. His eyes crackle when he’s angry, mine turn red. Not red as in I’m crying, but red as in the irises are red. And I’m not talking about dulled red or anything of that sort; I’m talking about bright, blood red. Ice, Death, Seraphim, and Justice aren’t in line for my hand really. They sort of are, but it’s only because their fathers want them to get married. They’re just my friends, not that I want them to be anything else. Besides, even if I did, they already have their other halves, and plus, they’re gay. I’ve also known them like, about forever. Ice and Death are one happy pair, and Seraphim and Justice are another.
What really pisses me off though is that all the rest of the people lined up for my hand just want me for my kingdom. There’s only one person not lined up for my hand. Yes, everyone else in the world is lined up for my hand. Even women, and I have to say that I don’t think my tastes run there. Anyway, about this prince who is not lined up for my hand. He’s one stuck up bastard. Of course, I’ve never met the man, but come on, he broke Seraphim’s heart, you got to be pretty low to do that. Seraphim is one of the kindest people in the world. NOONE can withstand his warmth. Except for this jerk. Even Ice warmed up to Seraphim really soon. Ice is one of the coldest, hard to get through to people that I know. He’s very selective with his friends. He doesn’t trust people easily.
So I’ve decided to get to know this guy for myself. My father has agreed to help me with my plans. Seraphim quickly found out when Silence was about to set sail to go on a journey to find a wife. My father would create a storm to wreck his ship and I would save the prince while my people carried the sailors safely back to their shore. I would carry him back to shore, and then sing to him until he regained consciousness and then I would flee back to the sea. I am also reputed for my voice which is supposed to be the loveliest ever heard. Hehe, that should explain why my alias will be Siren. Number one reason I want to see Silence, he doesn’t want me especially since he’s my equal; everyone is lined up for his hand too. Number two reason is because if I can make him fall the tiniest bit in love, maybe he’ll feel sorry for what he did to Seraphim and apologize.
Everything went according to plan. Father raised up the storm when Silence was 50 miles away from shore. I came up with my sea spirits, invisible, and started to break the wooden planks of the ship. Next we lighted a couple of the barrels of gunpowder and firecrackers. The sailors and Silence jumped over board. The small boat had been destroyed also. The dolphins came up and nudged at the sailors. They dove under the sailors and back up so that the sailors’ bodies were draped over them. I sat upon Pirene, my dolphin, and cradled Silence’s body in my arms. When we got to shore, the dolphins shifted to their human forms and placed the sailors at one end of the beach and then went bacto tto the sea. I carried Silence and placed him at the other end.
I hadn’t gotten a good look at him yet. I started to laugh. Seraphim had claimed that Silence was the handsomest guy on earth, well, except for now Justice was the handsomest to him. Right now Silence looked like a drowned rat if you asked me. His longish unkempt hair covered his face from view. It was a light brown. It lay limply, only moving from time to time from his breathing. I guess I laughed a little too loud because it woke him up. He sat up and yelled in surprise.” I’m blind! I’m blind!” he screamed. I started to snicker, my hand covering my mouth in order to keep me from erupting into fits of giggles. It was really quite funny, he was flailing his arms around. Finally he figured out that it was his hair covering his face and he swept it out of his face. I was shocked, it was as if someone whacked me over the head with a bat. Clear dark green eyes that reminded me of the bottom of the waters, and his features were finely cut. Seraphim was right. He was very handsome. I could tell that the sun was getting into his eyes and that he could not see clearly. I took advantage of this and ran quickly back to the sea before he could get a clear view of me and ruin all my further plans.
I rode home on Pirene’s back. Many people think that dolphins come in only one color, a bluish gray. Of course not, how could such beautiful creatures come in only one color, not that I have anything against that really, I swear! They come in all sorts of colors. Pirene is the daughter of my parent’s dolphins. Her line has bthe the royal dolphin line since, forever. You can tell because they’re the only ones who are sort of a pearly whitish color. Everyone can recognize them and therefore they recognize you as a royal family member if you are riding one.
As I rode away, I looked back at Silence. I saw a beautiful girl standing over him. Her wavy blond hair blew around her. She offered a hand to him but he shook his head and got up by himself. The sailors had regained their conscious by and and were running toward their master. I watched as they walked away from the beach. Then Silence turned around and looked at me as if he could see me from that far away. I smiled and then disappeared under the sea.
For the next few months, my spirits watched over Silence, bringing news of him to me. He was moping around looking for someone. He didn’t remember a lot of what happened when he arrived on the shore. All he remembered was there was something special out there before it went away and then Lenali, the girl, found him. He just sat around all day and never laughed or anything. To me, this seemed no different than what I had heard from Seraphim before. Finally the day came when I came out of the water, back upon the land.
I walked into the palace by the back door of the palace. I was wearing a white t-shirt with a yellow smiley face on it and faded jeans. Remember, I live in a different world than you. My long black hair was neatly braided. It was so hot, that’s one downside of the summer, it can be hot to the point where you’re like frying in a pan. There was a whole line of people waiting to be interviewed about why they would qualify for the new job that was open. The prince needed a new teacher for horseback riding. Apparently, this was the only thing he was not good at.
I was the last person to be interviewed. The prince’s secretary looked up and smiled. He said, “I’m sorry, I’ve already chosen the new teacher.” “But you haven’t even interviewed me, how could you possibly know that the person you chose could even be better than me?” “Very well, but you shall have to be quick, I don’t have much time.” I quickly learned that I was to show my skills by taming a dolphin. Lenali, who had been the person chosen before, had been able to do this. I was starting to get irritated at this girl. She could ruin all my plans. However, this would be an easy task to accomplish.
I walked to the shore, the secretary behind me. I cupped my hands to my mouth and imitated a dolphin whistle. Dozens of dolphin heads popped up. I chose a male who was a beautiful shade of sea foam blue-green. I definitely passed the test. Lenali came walking towards the beach. The secretary apologized to her, saying that I had proved to qualify as well and that we would have to compete against each other. I smiled and waved at her but she only glared at me and turned away. Our test was to see who could make the dolphin people change into their human form and the person who had more people would win. I grinned to myself. This was also easy. Lenali went first. She raised her hands for effect and started to chant some strange gibberish.
A dolphin appeared, it was the same horrid shade of shocking pink which seemed to be her favorite color. The dolphin looked pretty miserable to me. It was having difficulty changing its form. It was pretty reluctant but Lenali was forcing it. Finally it gave up and lay on the shore, exhausted. Lenali scowled angrily. I cupped my hands and imitated the dolphin whistle again. Dozens of dolphins resurfaced again. They all came out of the water in their human forms. I placed my hand on Lenali’s dolphin and asked it to change for me. It changed into a small child. I was shocked. How could she have forced such a small child to do something so hard, did she have no heart? This only caused Lenali to scowl even deeper. Obviously I was the winner. She stalked away angrily screaming about how she had charitably offered to teach the prince, and how she was born from a noble family and it was not right to be replaced by a commoner brat like me. How lucky for her that she didn’t know the truth about me otherwise she would have been begging for her life in less than a second. I smiled and shrugged my shoulders. It’s a matter of the fittest and I survived.
Hinoya, the secretary, first showed me to my quarters in the palace and then he led me to the prince’s rooms. He tapped Silence on the shoulder. “Uh, Your Royal Highness sir, um, the new horse mistress has been chosen. Uh, here she is. Uh, I’ll be leaving you two alone now.” He retreated out of the room. “So, a girl has been chosen to teach me.” I started to laugh, he sounded so much like Justice. He spun around. Whoops, I forgot that he probably would have remembered my laugh. His eyes narrowed as he was trying to place me, but just couldn’t make the connection. “Have we met before?” Hmm, I guess the sun hadn’t totally blocked his view after all. “Um, yeah, sure. I’m the girl of your dreams.” I watched as his face paled. Whoops, there I go again. “Um, that is, I’m your worst nightmare.” I substituted lamely. If I didn’t watch it, I was about to blow my cover.
“Ahh, so you’re one of those people who think that I’m just too stuck up for my own good. And so now that you have the job, you’re going to make me train until I pass out and make me regret everything I’ve ever done, neh?”
“Uh, actually, it’s just a way of introducing myself. Not that you’re that far away from the truth. From what Seraphim’s told me, you seem pretty stuck up, but there’s always a second chance for everyone.”
Oops, now my big mouth had to go and mention Seraphim.
“So you know Seraphim huh? Don’t tell me, he sent you here to spy on me. Or even worse, you’re a gift from him. I finally thought that I was rid of him and 8 months after he’s stopped bothering me, he starts over again!”
“Uh, wow, you must be like, the only person who doesn’t like him. And I’m his friend, and why I’m here doesn’t have anything to do with him.”
“Huh! You, a commoner, friends with a prince? That I find hard to believe.”
“Hey, there’s nothing that states anything against that. It just proves how close minded some people can be.”
“And how stuck up too huh?”
I was filled remorse for my last remark as I heard the bitterness in his voice. I guess it was one of his sore spots.
“Heh, heh, you know what, maybe we should start the lessons now.”
He led me to the horse paddocks. The horses were munching away on the grass. I noticed that he stayed away from the paddock. I smiled to myself. I looked at all the horses. I noticed that farther down, there was a second paddock with only two horses in it. One was pure white with a red mane and a red tail. The other was black with the same blood red shine as my hair. This horse was obviously made for me. I started for the second paddock.
“Hey! Wait! You can’t go there! Those horses are too dangerous.”
“What kind of trainer would I be if I can’t tame these?”
I reached the second paddock. Silence was running after me. I reached m hand out to stroke the black stallion’s mane. He snorted and pranced away from the fence.
“Sometime later, I’ll tame you.” I promised.
“Hey! Don’t you listen? I told you they’re dangerous!” I turned and looked at Silence. I smiled.
“I know, aren’t they beautiful? What are their names?”
“Thunder and Lightning.”
“Speaking of names, I don’t believe you know mine yet. Siren at you service.” I stuck my hand out. He looked at it for a second and then shook it.”
“So, what exactly is your problem with horses or riding or whatever?”
He calmly began to explain to me that he always fell off, no matter what. I couldn’t believe it. He was pretty graceful in his movements on the ground. I decided to re-teach him the basics. That is, if he even bothered to learn them the first time. As it turned out, he didn’t even know how to take care of a horse. I chose a small, chestnut colored mare for him to begin with.
He was a fast learner. Within a matter of days, he’d learned all the basics. I watched him try to get into the saddle. He’d tried all different ways. The only way he hadn’t tried was the normal way. He’d already scared the mare numerous times with the antics he was putting on. I watched as he jumped off the fence post and onto the mare. She reared up and whinnied in terror. Silence flew off and fell in a puddle of mud. I sighed and walked over to Silence. He glared at me. I extended my hand down to him. He glared even more and batted it away.
“I think you’ve had enough for today. You should go get some rest.”
“What, so now I’m a quitter?”
“No, I’m just pointing out that you are capable of being injured and there is a limit to how much you can do to yourself. Quite frankly, I don’t think I want to see it.”
“NO! I refuse to until I can actually get into the saddle.”
“Gah! Suit yourself.”
I grabbed him, swung him over my shoulder and carried him back into the palace. I grinned, having immense strength among one of my magic powers helps a lot. He punched and kicked a lot but I ignored him. I set him down in his quarters, but not too gently. He fell down with a thump. He sat there glaring at me. As if that was going to do anything. Then he smiled and moved his legs. Before I knew it, I was sitting on the ground next to him. I sat there in surprise. Only few people had ever managed to sweep me and he had been able to. Hmm, he wasn’t as weak as I thought. I reached over and playfully punched him. He looked at me in surprise thenthen started to grin. It was the first real smile I’d ever seen on him.
“Hey lookie! Mr. Serious can actually smile!”
Without warning, he launched himself at me. We punched and kicked each other. The mock fight lasted for about and hour. Finally I pinned him down. He was too exhausted to do anything.
“Oh, yeah! Look who won! Who’s the winner? Huh? Huh?”
I pranced around the room cheering. I didn’t notice him tackle me. Doink! I crashed to the ground.
“Look who’s the winner now?”
“That’s because I let you. You need to get rest, we’ll settle this another day.”
“Huh, you let me. Yeah right. As if. You’re pretty good. For a girl.”
“Hey lookie. Mr. Serious can smile and make jokes now. Great improvement!”
I heard choking sounds coming fhim.him. I looked over. He had his fist stuffed into his mouth. He was trying very hard to suppress the snickers coming out. Finally he gave up and full blown laughter came out. I looked at him, I was shocked.
“Hn, I guess Mr. Serious can laugh now too, neh?”
His laughter was contagious. I started to laugh along with him. We lay on the floor in fits of laughter. We laughed until we were exhausted and then we fell asleep. I woke up in the middle of the night. Silence was shivering and moaning. I carried him to his bed. I turned to leave but he grabbed my hand and asked me not to leave. He was still asleep but there was something bothering him in his dreams. He started whimpering, he was having nightmares. I sighed and lied next to him. I put my arms around him and rubbed his back comfortingly like I would for a baby. He squeezed me tight like child would hold on to a toy when they were scared. I knew already that I was falling in love with him. I wished I could make whatever was bothering him go away. I wished that I could hold him every night. But it was only a wish.
After a while, I fell back asleep. I awoke in the morning with the sun shining on my face. Silence’s arms were still around me. He stirred and opened his eyes. He looked around and his eyes fell on me. He yelled and shoved me away.
“Aah! What are you doing? Get out of here! I knew it! You were just trying to get me to marry you like all the other people. So you tricked me. Well that’s not going to work! Get out!”
I glared at him.
“If you really think that of me, I’m deeply disappointed in you. I thought you were my friend. Now I see that I am gravely mistaken.”
I bowed and left the room. I spent the whole day sulking at the paddocks. I didn’t go in for any of the meals. When the sun started to set I went down to the beach. I watched the sun as it went down in many different shades of color. I sat there, my arms hugging my knees curled up to my chest. I was getting homesick. Pirene stuck her head out of the water, calling me to come back. I shook my head. I couldn’t let anyone see Pirene. It was too dangerous. Then I heard footsteps behind me. Pirene dove back under water. I turned and saw Silence.
“You didn’t eat today.”
“…” // No kidding! What does he thinks he is? Some kind of genius? //
“You shouldn’t skip food just because you’re sulking.”
“…” // Sulking?!! I have every right to be mad and if I don’t eat, it’s my own goddamned business. //
“I guess you’re mad at me and giving me the silent treatment.”
“…” // Damn right I am! //
“I …”
“…?” //Uh huh? You what?”
“I’msorry!”
“Hmm?” // Oh boy was I going to make him grovel. //
“I’msorry!”
“What was that coming out of your mouth? I couldn’t hear it. Could you speak louder and clearer?” // I wasn’t about to let him go that easily. //
“I’M SORRY!”
“What for?”
“Grr. You’re really enjoying this aren’t you.”
“Hmm? What was that?” // Of course I’m enjoying this.” //
“I’m very sorry for making false accusations about you. I know that you would never have done such a thing. It was stupid of me to think so. You trusted me as a friend and I broke that trust. Please forgive me and give me another chance.”
// Heh heh, that’s what I’m talking about! //
“One thing”
“Hmm?”
“Come here.”
“Ok.”
He walked over to the edge of the water. Grinning evilly, I grabbed his hand and ran with him farther out in the water.
“Hey! Whayda think you’re doin’?”
“Nothin’.”
I pushed him in.
“AAAHHHH!”
“Mwahahahaha! Now I accept your apology and forgive you.” // Payback is the best. //
SPLOOSH! I landed in the water as well. A hand dragged my foot under water. I resurfaced with Silence. My bangs stuck to my face. Peering between them I could see that his hair was stuck to his face just like the first time I saw him on the beach. I started laughing again. He started laughing too, but the hair got in his mouth.
“Euch! Plue! Eww, gross!”
I started laughing even harder.
“Ha! Think that’s funny do you?”
He stuffed my hair into my mouth. I choked.
“Arg! Euch! Plue! Patooie! Not funny!” // How dare he stand there laughing his head off! I almost died back there! //
I dunked him under the water. Oops, I forgot the part where he would immediately grab me under too. He did. We fought under water and resurfaced for air before going back to our mock water fight. Finally we crawled back onto the warm sand and lay there before falling asleep. I woke up early in the morning and watched as the sun rise. I love doing that. The sunrise and the sun setting are both so beautiful. Especially when you’re on a beach. The water reflects the sky and it’s like you’re getting double the amount. One up there and one down here.
I smiled and whed sed softly. Pirene came out of the water and up to me. I missed her. I sat upon her back and watched the waves slowly splashing by as she sped through the waters. When we headed back to the shore, I felt even more homesick than ever. I missed my life under the sea. I got off and said bye to Pirene. It would be a long time before I would see her again. She was finally of age to be mating.I suspected her mate was Arccas, my cousin Ferrin’s dolphin. I had no idea how long I would be upon this land. I hoped that it wouldn’t be so long that I didn’t get to see Pirene’s new borns. They would be for my children. Whenever I’m going to have kids that is.
I sat back down upon the shore and smiled down upon Silence. He looked peaceful asleep. He let the mask that covered his face during the hours that he was awake slip. His hair was usually in his face. I wonder how he could see through the thick mass of bangs. Not that I’m complaining or anything. He looks good with them and it also gives him a mysterious appealing sort of look. Gah! Look at me, I spend a month with him and I’m already over my head heels in love with him. I brushed the said bangs to one side of his face, marveling at how soft they were. I let my fingers trace over his face mapping it so that I could remember. Then an evil idea popped into my mind.
I’m not one much for make up but I liked the colors so I’d gotten a make up kit once and kept it on me because you never knew when one of your companions could be in desperate need. I laughed an evil laugh to my self. I looked at my make up and then looked at Silence, trying to figure out what colors would clash the most with him. As it turned out, he suited every color in my palette. I sighed and decided that I would have to go with the color that best suited him. I wetted his hair and made it stay to one side. Next I took some seaweed and shells and wove them into his hair. I smirked as I applied waterproof mascara to his long, and naturally curled, to die for lashes. I snickered at the thought that he would have to grovel for the wipes that took waterproof mascara off. Next I applied 8 hour non-fading sparkling emerald eye shadow to his eye lids. He already had color in his cheeks so I skipped the blush. Last but not least, I got out my most powerful weapon. Lip gloss! Not the kind that you can rub off. The kind that lasts for 8 hours and doesn’t fade during those 8 hours. Doesn’t come off when you’re eating either. I chuckled evilly to myself as I put the lip gloss on his lips. It was a pale pink, but not so pale that it wasn’t visible. Oh no, I was not going through all this trouble just to apply make up that was not noticeable.
Man this guy was a heavy sleeper. You’d think that with all the warrior training he went through, he’d sleep a lot lighter. He was a lot like Seraphim and Death. You’d need an earthquake to wake them up. Of course if I mentioned any similarities between Silence and Seraphim right now, Silence would probably decapitate me. Maybe he was a light sleeper, maybe I’m just an expert on stealth. I’ve had some warrior training too. Aw, who am I trying to trick. I’m just flattering myself and defending Silence. I’m beginning to sicken myself. Me, the princess who thought she could never love. Me, the one who laughed at my friends and made fun of them because they were so mushy and in love. Me, the one who has finally fallen in love, turned mushy as well and now feels like the wicked witch of the west when she was melting into a pile of goo. Ack, my brains are all turned to mush.
Anyways, now where was I until I turned into mush? Ah, yes. I started cackling mercilessly. I thumbed my nose and stuck out my tongue and the sleeping Silence. And then I fell into silence. Silence looked like a very attractive girl at the moment. If I hadn’t already known that he was male, I would have become a lesbian. Euch! What am I thinking! My brains turning into mush again! Think of something unattractive! Lenali, Lenali, Lenali. Ahh, there we go. If there was anyone that would drive anyone far away from being straight or a les, it would be Lenali. My masterpiece opened his emerald eyes and caught me smirking at him.
“What?!!”
“Heh heh, look in the water.”
He looked at his reflection and screamed.
“Gah! What have you done! You’ve taken my manhood!”
“Nope, it’s still down there if it ever was. Or the first person you’ve ever had a little hmph with did.”
“Aaaah! Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!”
“Hmm, shows how mature you are.”
“Aaaaaahhh! Is that mascara! And lip gloss and blush and eye shadow?!! And what have you done to my hair?!!”
He scooped water up in his hands and desperately tried to scrub the make up away.
“Hmm, check list, lets see. Macara, check. Eye shadow, check. Lip gloss, check. Blush, hmm, lets see, nope don’t remember anything about that. It’s natural. Don’t bother trying to take any of it out, it lasts for 8 hours, at least tye sye shadow and lip gloss do. Mascara however, needs a special soln ton to get out, it’s waterproof. And as for your hair, I suggest leaving it that way, you don’t want people to think you’re a weakling if they see crimps in your hair. Mwahahahahahahaha …”
My laugh was cut short as I was tackled to the ground once more. That makes it four times doesn’t it. His hand covered my mouth. I struggled on the ground flailing and kicking at him but his weight pinned me down. Finally I had to use last resorts. I bit down on his hand very hard, my canines had sprung out. His eyes widened for a second but he still didn’t remove his hand. Damn, now I had no other weapons. I began to feel sorry for biting him. It must have hurt a lot. I could taste his blood in my mouth. It was sweet, salty and bitter all at the same time. I licked at the wound that I had made, my healing power soothing it and then the wound closed up. It was sort of like an apology for biting him.
The fact that his wound had healed got him to remove his hand. He stared at in shock. There wasscarscar, no trace of a wound, nothing. He blinked several times and then turned to look at me. He pointed to my mouth.
“You ... you have … f..f..fangs.”
‘Shimatta!’
A/N: Same as Dee and Gee, don\'t know where this is heading yet
// Heh heh, that’s what I’m talking about! //
“One thing”
‘Shimatta!’
