The Viking Saga
All Sister Mary Margaret heard was the unrelenting sound of steel
hitting steel and the battering of swords and axes against the keep\'s defenses. She felt her heart pounding. It was so cold and all she smelt was smoke but the smoke had a sickly smell to it. She was hiding in the solar against a damp wall. All around her was chaos. The castle was going to fall to the northmen. The other women were weeping and no one noticed the young nun huddled against the wall. It had been like that in her father\'s keep. No one noticed her.
She got up and went to Sister Katherine. She grasped her hand and asked,\" Sister, what are we going to do? I thought the castle walls were going to protect us. Father Clement said so.\"
Sister Katherine looked at the impossibly innocent young girl and said, \" Father Clement was wrong.\"
At this emenement, Mary looked at her in shock. The reality of their situation hit her like an arrow. \"What\'s going to happen to us Sister Katherine. Those northmen would not dare hurt us, we are brides of Christ!\"
The older nun looked at the girl sadly and said, \"You have a choice to make my dear: To live or to die today. If you want to die, do like those ladies by the stairs. They are going up to the parapet walls and they are going to jump.\"
Mary looked in shock at the three high born ladies. She recognized the lady in red; she was the Lady Mathilde, the lord\'s wife. Mathilde had her head up and her color was high. The other ladies were weeping but not Mathilde.
Mary watched her turn and walk up the stairs. She turned to Katherine and said, \" But it is a terrible sin to take your own life! I could never do that!\"
Katherine turned to her and grasped her shoulders. As she did this, an almighty crash shook the castle walls and a sound unlike anything she ever heard enveloped the keep. Sister Katherine yelled into her ear, \" Then do as I say and run and hide upstairs and if the northmen find you, let them do as they will. Do you understand me, let them do as they will or they will kill you!\"
Katherine pushed Mary towards the stairs and in the melee, Mary lost sight of her.
