Prologue:
Waging war
Two figures waged war in the pale light of a far off streetlamp, one of the few in the thickly forested park. The moon covered her eyes with a thick veil of clouds to keep from seeing the atrocious clash taking place in a small wooded area. One figure was struggling to block each of the attacks his adversary was dealing, the other sending out blow after blow, missing every other attempt.
The warrior lost sight of her adversary, but was taken by surprise when a knee slammed into his back.
“Ahhh!!” the figured cried, the voice being revealed to be distinctly female.
“Give up. . .” snapped the other figure as he bent her arm behind her back so that her wrist was almost level with her shoulder blades. “You don’t stand a chance of winning, and you know it, Kendra.”
“Just because I think I know something, that doesn’t mean it a sure thing,” she retorted as her leg ripped through the air, and the toe of the boot she was wearing slammed into oppoopponent’s nose.
Quickly, she yanked her arm free and spun around, smashing her fist into his jaw in the process. She then backed away from him, putting almost ten feet in between her and the man who was had caused so many of the aches she was feeling. She could feel the wound from his blade of a nail still gushing; her ankle throbbed as she continued to stand on it, despite how she was sure that it was at least twisted.
“So, you finally decided to try and fight. About damn time…” he chided with a mocking scoff.
He sauntered over to where she had fallen earlier in the fight, after he had sliced open her torso for the third time, the third being the worst of all three. He placed his finger and passed it through the red liquid on the ground before raising the digit in front of his face and lightly ran his tongue along the skin, sang tng the coppery taste of the red liquid.
“Oh, just great, you are a sicko… Just great,” she groaned. “Why can’t I ever fight anyone normal?” The girl then dove to the side, narrowly avoiding the only non-physical attack of the entire fight, a ball of raw energy as it flew by her, slamming into a tree. She felt the wound in her side rip open as she collided with the ground stomach first; tears erupted from her eyes as a pained gasp escaped her lips.
Her opponent simply smirked as he formed a ball of light behind the seemingly unsuspecting
girl. A moment later, the orb flew at her bacnd, nd, to his surprise, she jumped up, flipping over the attack, surprising her opponent to the point that he didn’t recover in time to dodge. His body was consumed by a scorching blue fire that died quickly, leaving nothing more than a few ashes.
“That takes care of him…” she sighed softly as she limped over to her dagger, which had been tossed aside at the beginning of the fight, her left hand clutching her right side, an attempt to stop the bleeding. After she picked up the small weapon, Kendra looked down once more at the wound and groaned, “I can’t believe this. I told Jordon I’d be more careful, and what do I do? I get injured again. He’s going to lecture me for sure this time…”
Sighing softly to herself, Kendra hobbled to the path she had taken to the spot and started on her way home, a place which was an hour’s walk away from her current location. She noticed the time nearing five in the morning with a shrill curse erupting from her mouth.
“I can never catch a break can I? I don’t even get to have an hour to sleep anymore…”
she groaned.
“Perhaps I can change that to where you never have to worry about getting enough sleep
ever again,” suggested a smooth masculine voice as she heard a soft scratching sound, the sound of an arrow being pulled from a quiver.
“Why can’t I just be left alone for once?” Kendra almost sobbed as she turned to face a tall man with long dark auburn hair, and piercing dark gray, almost silver, eyes. He would have been handsome if not for the smirk adorning his face or the evil glint shining in his eyes. His pale skin was almost the color of porcelain.
“Because you are just that cursed,” he replied as he aimed an arrow at her and fired. She jumped to the side, the arrow missing her heart, piercing her right shoulder instead. She bit back a cry of pain, and clenched her eyes shut to keep tears from escaping. Gritting her teeth, the girl reached up and wrenched the arrow from her shoulder.
‘Just great,’ she thought as she saw more blood gush from yet another wound. She knew that soon the loss would be too much, but she couldn’t bring herself to care since once she had died, another innocent would simply be dragged into the mix of violence and death.
Her muscles screamed as she attempted multiple back flips, the final one sending her over the head of her latest opponent. She landed, shooting her arm out towards his back, in an attempt to ram the small weapon into the small of his back. She gasped painfully as he spun around, grabbing her wrist just before her dagger would have pierced in skin.
He smiled cruelly as he crushed her wrist, forcing the dagger to fall. With his other hand he reached out and wrapped his hand around her throat. “It is too bad that I have to do this. You are beautiful, but I must do what I must. Goodbye, Kendra.” He then tightened his grip until he felt her windpipe collapse beneath his fingers. “Such a pity,” he sighed before disappearing, leaving the body of an 18 year old fighter lying in the forest.
