The Last House

“Alright, it’s getting late. Take the kids to that house with the light on. We’ll meet you at the cars.” The woman yawned and shivered, holding the toddler close to her, whose cries were a cue to the night’s end. The brother and sister nodded, one child grabbing hold of a hand and the four walked down the sidewalk to the only house with their lights on.
“You know this some bullshit, right?” the younger brother mumbled and his sister tilted her head to the side.
“What…?”
“This is how most horror movies start off. Send the black people to their doom.”
“Oh, hell… you’re right,” she chuckled and shook her head. She didn’t want him to know that she checked out the rest of the neighborhood. It was nearly silent and most of the homes turned their porch lights off. “We’re always killed off in the first five minutes of a scary movie…”
“Right!” the taller man laughed as the four approached their destination. The two who held their hands rushed for the house until they noticed the fog coming off the porch.
“Oh, come on, guys: how many houses have we’ve gone to that had the fog machine?” the woman laughed and tried to urge the children on.
“Auntie, I’m scared…” the oldest whimpered.
“Well, I guess no candy for you.” Her father shrugged and the six-year-old gasped. The boy with her huffed as he went on the porch.
“Auntie’s right, Allie: it’s fake.” he held his head up but kept his fake gun clutched to his chest. He knocked on the door and prepped his bag to receive candy.
All four screamed as the door immediately swung open and they were greeted by a monstrous creature who growled and screamed along with them. It was the woman who laughed first and grabbed the kids to keep them from running away completely. The tall and statuesque man removed his mask and laughed along with her.
“Sorry, that never gets old!”
“It’s official: I had a heart attack.” Her brother breathed and the other man laughed more. The children calmed down long enough to receive the last of the man’s candy: a special treat for being scared out of their minds.
“I was starting to think everyone called it a night. It’s gotten a bit cold out, huh?”
“Yeah, a bit.” The woman nodded and adjusted her jacket.
“You know, the wife made a lot of hot chocolate: why don’t you guys have a cup before you head home?”
“With marshmallows?” Allie’s brown eyes widened and the adults chuckled.
“Sorry, princess: no marshmallows. I can’t seem to keep ‘em in the house for long. Thanks for the reminder to go grocery shopping, though,” the man smiled down at the little girl before he looked at her father’s idea of a costume. “No way: you’re a Dolphins fan?”
“Yeah…”
“Sweet. We just moved here from Miami. Finally, another fan! You heard what they said about us on Sportscenter, right?”
“Pfft: idiots…”
“Right!” the two men laughed.
“I guess it wouldn’t hurt to grab a hot cocoa and warm up for a bit.”
“You’re just saying that because he’s a Dolphins fan…” the woman rolled her eyes.
“Oh, your wife’s not a fan?”
“Sister. And, no. She’s a ‘Seagulls’ fan.”
“Ugh…”
“Hey!” her eyes widened and the men laughed. The homeowner ushered the four inside and they were greeted by immediate darkness. Before anyone could say anything, the man shut the door.
“Oh, okay: ha ha, this is funny…” the woman tried to peer through the darkness but had no such luck.
“S-Sorry but… it needs more food…” his once confident voice was reduced to a nervous whimper as the four tried to turn their heads to the feral growling and ticking in the darkness.
After so long, their disappearances were ruled as deaths although no bodies were ever found. The spouses of the two siblings had the police search the area where they were last seen extensively. The house where the wife thought she told them to go to was empty and, according to the neighbors, had been for quite some time. None of the neighbors remember seeing the four on Halloween, and it appeared as though they disappeared into thin air.
