9 - END

Lon wed them, at Bend 81. Thomas’ parents persisted they could be there too. Thomas was glad they wanted to be present, and Cherise was his witness.

They had been very surprised when Thomas had told them the news. But his sister had been so happy and enthusiast, their parents could only be happy too. They were in fact glad their son had made his definite choice.

The party was held in the Blue Ardvark, and here others were invited too.

Mr Sonenberg arrived with his wife and daughter. He was highly indignant, almost offended. With large steps, he walked to Thomas. “Thomas Alan, you dirty traitor!”

A painful silence fell over the pub. The Wolves didn’t interfere though; they knew Thomas was perfectly capable to handle his own matters.

“How dare you, to marry a… a man? Have you forgotten about the agreement your father and I have made?”

Major stepped forward to protect his husband. He looked impeccable in his tuxedo, but his fists were still from a Wolf.

Thomas stepped between them. “Watch out, Edward Sonenberg,” he said calmly. “I thought we have had this discussion a long time ago. I don’t want to marry your daughter. I have married out of love now. I invited you to share our luck. Don’t reject it.”

Sonenberg didn’t listen. He demanded an apology. He wanted to speak, but was pushed aside.

“I’m jealous, Thomas Alan!” Catherine stepped in front of him. She was beautifully dressed in an evening gown and held a large bouquet of red roses in her arms. “Oh, not because you have married, but because you have found your luck. Your eyes opened sooner than mine.” She offered him the roses. “Please forgive me,” she said quietly.

Thomas accepted the flowers. “Don’t get me wrong,” he said, “I’m glad you are here and I accept your apologies, but aren’t you mad at me?”

Catherine looked sternly at him. “Thomas, if you would stand next to your wife now, I would have scratched her eyes out. But the fact that you have married a man gives me the, perhaps wrong, feeling it isn’t entirely my fault.”

The men laughed at this. Thomas placed the roses at a table and then took her between his arms. “It isn’t your fault. Nor is it mine. We were not meant to marry each other…”

“Please remain my friend?”

Sonenberg saw how his daughter and Thomas promised each other eternal friendship.

A voice behind him said, “You shouldn’t complain. Thom and Cath say ‘yes’ to each other, in a way…” Anthony Alan shook his old friend. “What are you grumbling about, anyway? Why don’t you feel sorry for me; my son has married a man! Not that I mind about that.”

Sonenberg let him take him to the family table and took a large drink.

“I have been thinking about the fusion,” said Alan. “I think I know a suitable husband for Cath…”

Their wives looked at each other and sighed. Men… they would never change.

Major Tom nodded friendly to the departing housekeeper. He stepped down the stairs to the living room and lit the open fire. Again, he read the card on the mantelpiece. It was an invitation to the wedding of Catherine Sonenberg and Fredrick Cunningham. He grinned when he saw the scrabbled line, ‘will she be a mum before 30 after all’.

The front door opened and he placed the card back. He felt if the handcuffs were on his belt and went to welcome his husband.
