Chapter 9
The endAn hour later, that was how Jackson found him. He looked at the note that still lay on the nightstand. He didn’t really understand it, but figured that Cain and Shane knew what it meant. “Shane, “ He prodded at the prone figure, trying to get a reaction. “ Shane, even I don’t sleep this long.” “He left.” Shane whispered. Jackson leaned closer to decipher it but all he heard was that someone left. “Who?” he asked. “Cain.” Shane sat up, his eyes puffy and dark, curly hair more of a disheveled mess than usual. Jackson wasn’t getting anywhere with him. He almost wanted to shake him ‘til his head snapped back like pez dispenser. “Kid you are not really explaining anything.” Shane sat back against the headboard and gazed indifferently out the window. Jackson was really starting to hate this Cain guy now. Nothing but trouble since he blew in on his white horse. Shane knew he had to explain. Jackson was just bull headed enough to sit there all day and poke him if necessary. So he did. All the details. Jackson was pissed when it was over. But he couldn’t really tell if it was because Cain broke his friend’s heart or because Cain was sort of right. Shane could be passive, at times. “Kid.” Jackson exhaled. He was about to lay advice at Shane’s feet. He just hoped he was smart enough to heed it. “I don’t really like Cain--” “Good thing you didn’t fuck him then, “ Shane interrupted humorlessly. “Shut up dickweed. It just that it sounds like a test. He’s testing you to see how far you would go for him. Because, it seems like he went pretty far for you. And if you want him, go after him.” Shane angrily shoved Jackson out of his bed and onto his ass. “I thought that you would be on my side.” “Shit Shane,” Jackson rose, rubbing his ass, “ It’s the truth. I couldn’t be your friend if I didn’t tell you.” Shane pouted, crossing his arms. He kicked the blanket off of him, getting out of bed. Jackson left, not wanting to be the attention of Shane’s fuming. At least the kid was in better spirits. The shower didn’t call to him that day, as he was already wide awake. His appearance be damned, Shane just pulled on a pair of jeans and a red t-shirt. No dark clothes that day. Cain’s scent was still on those clothes and he found he liked it that way. On the way to the airport, Shane had an realization of what he really wanted. An epiphany, he supposed from his public education. On the way out of the house, he didn’t know but now he did. He knew now, God did he know. He wanted Cain, for as long as he would have him. The whole killing people business was a small hurdle, he reasoned simply. This whole relationship itself brought to mind that adage his father used to spout. “ Son, there are two types of problems. The ones people create for us, and the ones we create for ourselves. The ones we create for ourselves are all in our heads, easily surmountable, if we wanted to bad enough.” That was what Cain’s occupation was. A problem Shane created for himself. A barrier, an excuse he used. So was all that business with Keith and his father‘s death. Cain was all that mattered, not the little shit that kept them apart. Inside he was the most caring, loving, man that Shane had ever met. He had never hurt or lied to him. They loved each other and it was a healthy, mature love too. There was a chance to make it work. Shane swerved in and out of the busy lanes. Midday traffic was the seventh layer of hell he wouldn’t wish on his dentist. But it was close to the departure time. He had to suffer through it. Anxiousness pumped through his blood, making him reckless. He doubted he would make it in time. Yet, he was pursuing. He was the one going after Cain now. Shane had enough balls to admit that he was scared before. He was scared of Cain leaving someday. He was right too, Shane thought vindictively. It was a cold comfort, but it kick started him into action so maybe Cain did need to threaten him with leaving. Shane arrived at the airport a quarter before two. The parking was hectic and damn near impossible. The universe was not his fuck buddy now. Hell, it wasn’t even an ex boyfriend. He raced through the airport looking for a tall, dark man but Shane didn’t even know where Cain was flying to. He stopped at the arrivals/departures board but there was at least five flights leaving at two. Why couldn’t his epiphany come earlier? Shit, shit, shit. He sunk into the cold plastic of the airport seat, ready to give him up. It was too many people coming and leaving. Too much commotion. Too little time. Shane wanted to cry in frustration. And that’s what he did. He cried and he cursed Cain Nelson. He cried more times over this man than he did over his own father. H He stomped his feet and felt like ripping out his hair. Passers by stared but fuck them all. He didn’t care that he was acting like the child everyone treated him as. Soon 2:00 struck and the intercom crackled to life announcing the departing planes. Shane rose and leaned on the window staring at the planes outside. It was bright and sunny and Shane wished it would rain. A downpour that stopped all travel. Not only that it was too hot, and it should have reflected his state of mind. Miserable. “You act like a child throwing a temper tantrum.” A man spoke somewhere behind him and up to his right. Shane spun, intending to chew the bastard that dared to intrude on his thoughts and insult him. He froze when he recognized him. It was the grizzled old man from the bar, Cain’s adopted father! “What are you doing here?” Shane was almost too scared to hope. Maybe he knew where Cain was going. ‘I was just seeing my son off. What about you?” The man stood casually, his hands in his pockets. He saw the anguish in Shane’s eyes, but did little to relieve it. “Oh.” Shane turned forlornly back to the glass. “Do you know why I didn’t want you involved with my son?” “ I’m younger and better looking than you are?” Shane spitted sarcastically, facing the man with a sigh. This guy wouldn’t leave him alone. “Only to pedophiles, wiseass.” He held up his hand before Shane could say anything. “ Cain’s job doesn’t allow for romance or love.” “How?” ‘It just doesn’t. He could make a mistake. Love causes people to mess up. It clouds up their minds and if Cain messes up, then that’s it. It’s over. He could be killed or prosecuted not to mention you could be hurt. Do you think he would want that?” The man was right. Shane despised the fact that everyone that had no business in his love live were such fucking experts on the topic. Cain’s dad patted the mop of curly hair. He was pathetic looking, a snotty mess. But his son, Cain, loved him. He loved this defenseless kid who was a walking kidnapping, with lights and a billboard. Hell, even he could kidnap him, if he wanted to. Shane glared up at him. Catching the hint, the grizzled father turned and walked away, pulling out his phone as he went. Shane supposed the greasy old man was all right. Just a father trying to do his job, even if he did turn his son into a trained killer. It was kind of hard to imagine him training anybody though. Shane started to walk away, dragging his feet as if it were the first day of kindergarten. Not paying attention, he crashed into someone. Ready to curse them, just to take his resentment out on someone, he scowled briefly before he stopped. And smiled, his eyes glassy. ‘You’re really cute when you pout.” Shane latched onto Cain’s middle, his moodiness gone. “What are you doing here?” Shane grinned. Cain stroked the top of his head and smiled wistfully. “I’m still leaving. I just got a later flight.” Shane pulled away, hurt and heart heavy. All this and he still lost? It was all for nothing. “You were serious…..Cain, please, I don’t blame you. Not for anything.” Shane was almost begging, he was so desperate. Cain asked softly, almost inaudibly, “Why did you come, Shane?” “I love you. I want there to be an us. I want to wake up with you. Not just when we have sex, but everyday. I want you. ” Cain cupped his face and tilted his head. The kid was serious. His eyes were brimming with tears and his cheeks were red, freckles everywhere. Not only that, he came. In midday traffic, to the airport, he came. “Can I come with you?”
“No. No negotiation on that. You could get hurt. I wouldn‘t risk that.” Cain shot him down immediately. Shane wilted as Cain’s phone rang. “Hello. Dad. Yeah. I know. I know. No, there is no way. Return it.” Cain hung up, picked up his only bag and grabbed Shane’s hand. “ I saw your dad, “ Shane interjected quietly as they walked to the plastic chairs. “I know. How did you think I knew you were here?” “Really?” “Yeah. In fact he called to ask me if I was still going to take that job overseas. He thinks I won’t go because I’m a lovesick fool.” Shane wiped his nose on his sleeve and hesitantly looked up. “He was right Shaney.” “So…” “So….I won’t go.” Shane punched him in the arm angrily. “You were playing with me when you said you were still going..” “ Once my dad said that you came and I saw you, I wasn’t going to go.” “But you wouldn’t have known that if you caught the 2:00 plane. How did you even know I’d come?” Cain smiled to himself, “You once said that you were going to waste time on me. The least that I could do is waste a little on you.” “Is there even a later plane?” Shane was skeptical. “Yeah.” “Were you going to catch it?” “Yeah. But now I‘m staying.” “Were you testing me?” Shane asked. “A little bit, although there really was a job I had to do.” Cain pulled his smaller lover into his arms, glad that he stayed. Shane embraced his lover back, ignoring the stares and catcalls. He was glad he had gotten out of bed.
I am an idiot. I'm sorry to the review I deleted. It was a complete accident. Thanks for reading.
