CandyCaner: is it weird how quickly Selena got pulled *ahem* attracted to Marina?. And yes i agree, i don't think our dear Mrs. Powers was supposed to be given one animal far less two... XD

I don't know if i have to go down on my knees and literally beg for more reviews, but at least the hit count goes up...meaning people do read it... right? do you like it people out there? is it good? does it keep you coming back? i guess i'll never know...

No pretense, no worries, no fear. Just instinct. That had been my driving force for years. It helped me think on my toes, and keep myself and those dependant on me out of trouble. My instinct was now telling me to find Marina at all costs. I didn’t know how much this pack knew about me, but the chance that they would stoop below the belt to draw me out was not something I was willing to risk. If I wanted to fight them, I’d set the time and place under my terms, not the other way around. Marina was not going to get hurt because of some idiotic wolf-man and his fury at me.

I pulled a harsh turn at the corner before her house, my heart thrumming within my chest. I heard the dogs bark as soon as I parked the car and her footfalls moving at a leisurely pace to the door. My heart slowed but my anxiety stayed. She was fine, but for how long?

She came out and I met her on the walk-way giving her a bone-crushing hug. When I let her go she looked more than a tad dazed. “I’m sorry are you alright?” I asked hurriedly actually afraid that I’d hurt her in my relief.

“Uh huh… umm come in?” she said after a moment of just nodding dumbly. I followed her, brining the terrors who bounded out with her back inside. “Umm, want something to drink?”

“Water.” I actually liked this reaction I was getting from her, and I hadn’t even kissed her yet. ‘Wait, yet? I just came here to make sure Demetri didn’t hurt her, now I’m thinking about kissing?!’ I thought incredulously ‘Whoa there hormones, just because I never used you before in my libido does not give you the right to go hay-wire on me now.’ cause no matter how innocent this ‘kiss’ started off, with my luck and seeming lack of self control around her… this would lead to way beyond kissing…

“So, to what did I owe that wonderful pleasure outside?” she asked, jarring me out of the fantasy that was beginning to seep lust into my scent.

“I was just happy to see you were fine.” I said quickly, trying to drown my embarrassment in the water.

“And what made you think I wouldn’t be fine?” she asked coming directly into my line of sight. ‘What is it about those eyes?’

“I just needed to be sure… you remember that guy from the café?” I asked

“Yeah.” she wrinkled her nose and I had to reign in my arousal yet again ‘Why now damn it?’ “I didn’t like him.”

“Okay, remember what I told you about my old pack?” she moved into her living room nodding and I followed, blissfully unaware that Maya just padded into the room, round belly and all. “I think he, the guy, may be running with my old pack.” she stopped and looked at me seriously.

“What does that have to do with me?” ‘Don’t you see it has everything to do with you!!’

“You were with me,” ‘He would stoop that low,’ “He’d hurt you just to see me cringe. And even if it didn’t make me cringe, he’d still enjoy doing it.” ‘I can’t let that happen.’

“So I was with you. That doesn’t really say anything…” ‘I don’t go with anyone.’

“To him it would.” she was sitting down on the couch now, Maya’s head in her hands and I took in Maya’s state for the first time since she appeared.

“Why?” she looked up at me, her expression unreadable

“Because I turned him down.”

~~~~~~~
Somehow or the other, she talked me into staying with her, (not that I put up a fight otherwise) and the traitors made their appearance seeming to know I wasn’t going to be coming home today, and feeling absolutely no qualms about walking into a house full of huskies that probably ate cats on a regular basis, along with birds and other small furry animals.
“Quite comfortable are they?” Marina said noting how calmly my cats had integrated with her dogs, going as far as to curl up with them in a corner.
“I think they’re trying to tell me something.” I muttered, lying one the couch with my head on her lap looking at them and twisting my ring around and around my finger. I shivered when she put her hand on mind, effectively stopping my movement.
“I’ve been meaning to ask… why do you wear this all the time.” she tapped the ring gently
“It helps me stop myself… when I have a nightmare.” I replied slowly. “When I don’t want to shift.” I looked at her as she winced
“Must be a painful wake up call.” I chuckled humorlessly
“I’m used to it.” a howl pierced the darkness that we didn’t realize had fallen and everyone in the house (dogs and cats included) jolted up, tense and alert. I sat up, not daring to breath, another howl… closer, a low growl escaped my throat and I felt Marina tense next to me. ‘Breathe Selena, breathe.’ I felt my ring get tighter on my finger and I forced myself to think of something, anything to calm me down. I caught a whiff of roses on Marina’s hair and I couldn’t believe I never noticed the scent before. Within moments I was calm again, though the howls kept getting nearer.
“Do you think it’s them?” she asked, fear no where near her voice. I looked to her to see excitement shining in those blue orbs ‘Aaaand I’m lost again. Focus damn it!’
“Possibly. Wait for the sound of twisting metal to be sure.” I joked only to have my ears assailed by that self-same sound. ‘Not my caar!!!’ I groaned. “That’s it, no more jokes on my car being destroyed… ever.” Marina’s face betrayed amusement only briefly before the dogs retreated from the room and one of my doors smashed through the window.
“Get lost traitor!!!!” I cry echoed through the quiet, and virtually neighbor-less area in which Marina lived.
“What did I tell you? They call me a traitor.” I said shrugging and walking over to the fallen door, peering out the window to my broken car. Not a soul was in sight, but the howls were still there. “I’ll pay for the repairs by the way.”
“You aren’t leaving.” Marina was still on the couch, but by her tone I could almost tell if I made a move to leave she would have pounced on me in a second. ‘Maybe that’s not such a bad thing.’
“I don’t have a choice in that matter do I?” I asked turning around
“Not a one.” I smiled but tensed again. ‘Too close. Too close’ a jarring howl and a pained yelp echoed and we stood shell-shocked for less than a minute before dashing outside…
