Ellie had a make shift bookmark in her diary, it was made out of a small square piece of gauze. She stopped shy of August. She had to stop, she was overwhelmed with feelings of dread and anger.
Her mom was just unbelievable, she felt sick to her stomach when ever Maggie would come into the room and smile so sweetly at her, she felt sick. Yet she didn't say anything after all this was back when she was eighteen, she was hoping the more she read the more she would remember or at least see some improvement in the relationship between her mother.
For sure, she was positive she did not know who Justin was and she also did not remember that fight she and Maggie had. She did remember helping Lucas move out. She remember that day well, the one afterward not so well. Ellie looked down to see her feet covered in a pair girly pink slippers. Maggie had brought over extra clothes for Ellie. Ellie was sitting up in bed waiting for the nurse to come and draw blood. Ellie had been told if her white blood cell count came back normal she would be discharged in the evening. If not she had to wait till Friday. Ellie was praying that she could go home already. Her Monday dismissal was moved to Wednesday and her Wednesday was now being threaten to be moved to a Friday.
Ellie was caught up in her own thoughts she didn't even notice the nurse come into the room, set up ready to draw a small vial of blood.
“Ms?” the nurse caught Ellie attention.
“Oh,” Ellie smiled as she extended her arm and watch the procedure.
“ok then, the doctor will be in to tell you the results later.” She smiled and walked out.
Ellie moved her arm as she looked down to see her feet, 'pink' she thought. She try to move her feet but they felt heavy, she knew if she tried to stand her legs would buckled and give in.
“Knock knock” Ellie looked up to see Lucas, apparently he had barely gotten out of work, he was covered head to toe in dirt.
“Just got out,” she mention as he nodded and plopped himself on the chair next to the bed.
“So whats the 411?” he asked as he placed his hands behind his head and leaned back.
“Waiting for my blood work.” Ellie tried to shake her feet, and Lucas noticed.
“My hand coordination is better, but my feet feel numb. It scary to think about it.” Ellie mumbled as she looked at Lucas, he nodded as he patted her thigh, “don't worry, it just a matter of time.” he smiled gently at her, he had no idea how to console her, but he was there.
“Mel brought me an old diary,” Ellie kept the small talk going.
“ohhh all your dirty little secrets are there, anything involving me?”
Ellie smiled, “as a matter of fact yes, you moved out when you were 21 right?”
Lucas smiled as he thought about the pass, “yeah the most crappiest apartment but it was mine and I loved it.” he smiled at the freedom he tasted, the fact that it was him who was self sustaining himself.
The door opened and both turned to see the new comer.
“Hey,” Mel greeted them both as she hugged Lucas, “Mel your shirt,” he said as he smiled.
“It's fine, how was work?” she asked as she sat in the empty chair next to Lucas.
“A bitch but good,” he smiled as he looked at Ellie and winked at her.
“You want coffee Mel?” he asked as she stood up.
“Yea, two creams-,” “And a packet of sugar, I know.” He chuckled as he walked out.
Mel gazed at Ellie who was sitting up and her feet dangling of the bed.
Mel looked at the pink slippers and smiled, “Maggie is here,” Ellie nodded as she saw the visible discomfort.
“great,” Mel breathed out as she swallowed hard, “does she really have to live with us?” Ellie asked confused. She wasn't sure it be harmonious for Maggie to be under the same roof as them.
“I'll do what ever you want me to do, If you don't want her there, I'll tell her, if you don't mind, she can stay a week or so no more.” Mel looked behind her and then back at Ellie, who nodded and open her mouth to speak, but was interrupted as Maggie walked in.
“Oh,” Maggie uttered as she stood by the doorway. “Mel I didn't realized you were here,” she nodded as she smiled at Ellie.
“Yeah I came to see Ellie and see the results.” Mel commented as she leaned back in her seat.
Maggie notice Mel wasn't showing signs of leaving the room so she sat on the bed next to Ellie. She grabbed her arm, “I'm sure it'll be fine,” Maggie glanced at Mel and smiled at her.
“Maggie how long do you plan on staying over?” Mel brought the subject up in front of Ellie on purpose.
“As long as she needs me,” Maggie answered with out missing a beat.
“I see,” Mel nodded, “Is there a problem?” Maggie continued.
“Yeah,” Mel answered frankly as Ellie gasped a little.
“I'm not sure, I want you sleeping over, if you want to come over everyday fine with me, but your not living there.”
Maggie recoiled back at the words, she would have sworn she had settle this matter.
“Mel are you re-changing the deal we had?”
“Deal? you showed up at my house and threaten me, yes Maggie my house. I guess I forgot to tell you, the deed of the house is under my name, not Ellie's.”
At that Maggie stood up, “Don't you lie,”
“Oh suck it up Maggie, and Ellie this is normal, on a daily basis I am arguing with your mother over the most trivial things.” Mel looked at Ellie, “I bet you wrote about it thousands of time in those books of yours.”
Maggie shook her head vehemently, she didn't say anything because she feared Mel was right, but concede this defeat.
“Fine we'll play by your rules,” Maggie narrowed her eyes and Mel shrugged it off.
She would have done this that day at the house, but she was exhausted and she wanted to get rid of Maggie. She didn't want to see her, but she knew the minute she let Maggie in the house with a suitcase, she was not going to leave so easy.
Ellie closed her eyes, she hated this, she was mad at both of them for arguing and just wanted to leave.
Mel stood up and left, she didn't glance back or said anything to Ellie.
She stood outside the room until she saw Lucas come back with her coffee.
"hey what gives?" he asked nodding his head in the direction of the room.
"Is my mom in there?" he asked sighing as he sipped his drink, Mel nodded as she tasted her coffee. Just like she liked it, "Your a God at coffee making," she told Lucas, he chuckled as he crossed his fingers. "Wish me luck," with that he walked in.
Mel walked down the aisle sipping her drink. When she reached the nurse's station she ran into Ellie's doctor.
“Oh hey just who I was looking for, I got Ellie's results.” he showed a manila envelop as he opened it and pulled out certain papers.
“good news and bad news,” he smiled sadly at her and Mel nodded, “Bad news first doc,”
“Ok we'll the MRI scans show limited activity in the region of her memory, so I can with certainty tell ya there are going to be a lot of missing gaps. Those memories are gone for good. Sorry the extensive trauma just let's say delete them.” He sucked on his lower lip as he flipped the pages, “good news the infection that she had acquired due to the removal of her spleen has drastically dropped. I can send her home with an antibiotic prescription and a cocktail of vitamins that will help boost brain activity.”
He leaned on the counter as he signed some papers as he gave Mel a copy of said papers and a prescription.
“What about the arm?” Mel asked as she looked at the papers, and then looked up at him.
“Weirdest case, when she came in, the arm showed every signs of being fracture and upon further analysis its just extremely bruise, but only the underlining tissue.”
“so not broken?”
“Nope, not broken.”
Mel sighed in relief as she also signed the discharged papers and walked with the doctor back into Ellie's room.
“good news,” the doctor announced.

It was closed to eight at night when Mel pulled up the drive way, behind her Maggie pulled up and so did Lucas.
Ellie was leaning her head against the window as she took in the house in front of her.
It was a dark turquoise color with a white fenced porch in front there was a swinging sofa and a two wooden chairs.
The lawn in front was immaculate and neatly kept. A cherry tree stood in the middle of it.
“Home?” Ellie questioned as she glanced to the side to see Mel already outside the car.
“Here,” Mel threw her keys at Maggie, “Open the door, Lucas take the wheel chair inside will ya.”
Maggie mumbled as she made her way to the door and Lucas took the wheel chair from the back of Maggie's truck.
Lucas was about to offer to carry Ellie inside when he decide not to, it wasn't his job.
Mel opened the passenger door and greeted Ellie with a smile, “sorry if the house is not as glamorous as you expected.”
Ellie frowned, was it obvious she felt this wasn't her house, “No it's ok, I just I don't know maybe some memories are getting mixed.” Mel nodded as she bent down.
“Just put your arms around my neck ok?”
Ellie complied with the request as she felt Mel's breath on her neck, her hand slid under her legs as she was slowly lifted out.
“Wow,” Ellie mumbled next to Mel's ear. “I know It doesn't look like I have upper body strength.”
Ellie blushed as she whispered into Mel's ear, “I bet my mom was surprise too,” Ellie chuckled as Mel smiled.
They made it through the front door and Ellie notice the living room, which actually was familiar and she quickly glanced to see the dining room and barely caught a glimpse of the fridge that stood out in the back towards the kitchen.
The hallway was lit as Ellie looked at the wall and notice different photos framed. Finally reaching the end they both entered the room as Ellie frowned.
'green?' she thoughts.
“I changed the sheets,” Mel lied as she notice the confusion on Ellie's face, Ellie nodded but she wasn't satisfied, the night stands were not what she expected either.
She was brought out of her thoughts when she felt her bottom touch the bed.
Mel slowly laid her down and Ellie slowly retreated her arms.
Lucas came in and so did Maggie, “hey I put the chair in Ellie's office,” Lucas pointed behind his back and as an after thought he raised his eyes brows, “hey why is Ellie's office-,” Mel quickly shook her head which went unnoticed to Ellie but not to Maggie.
Lucas nodded as he clapped his hands. “all right then I'll be by tomorrow evening ok?” Lucas placed his arm over Maggie's shoulders. “Come on Ma you need to rest and check in on Dad.”
Maggie walked towards Ellie and kissed her on the forehead. “I'll be by tomorrow ok?”
Ellie nodded as she saw all three of them walk out.
Ellie looked around and saw the painting of the sailboat and she smiled at it. She remembered that piece vividly. She had sent for it to be framed.
“Ok then,” Mel came back into the room with a glass of water for Ellie and her prescription bottles. Ellie looked behind her to see across the hall another room the door was open and she could see a small bed and a desk.
Mel turned to see what she was looking at, “Oh that my office,”
“you sleep in there?” Ellie asked as she took the glass of water from Mel and the pills.
“yup, I do at times.” Mel sat at the foot of the bed and took Ellie's Slippers off. She pulled of the socks.
Ellie sighed thanking Mel for doing that.
Mel just smiled and patted her legs. She was just glad she was home for now.
