A New Face
It was a relief to open my eyes and find myself in that room again. So much had happened since last night, it seemed as though I hadn’t been here in an eternity.
Unfortunately, regardless of the relief I felt, I didn’t feel like playing with the instrument again. I merely sat there and cried my eyes out.
This place was great, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to stay here. When the sun rose in the morning the shadow would return to take me back to that horrible new home of mine. My side ached, my eyes burned, and my life was hell. What was I going to do now?
I held my head between my knees’s and wrapped my arms around my legs. I was sitting up in a kind of fetal position.
Warm air then brushed against my face and I looked up. I was still alone, but right in front of the device which I normally played so often was a basket.
I took a few moments to calm myself before I stood to investigate. Inside the basket I found chocolates and little pastries with blue and red neon ribbons and bows. Along with them was a card which read “To our Singer.”
My belly rumbled in response to the edibles, and I grabbed them hungrily. At first the chocolates tasted too sweet, but I eventually got over it and finished them off. Then I went for the cakes. I recall that I had been called singer by someone here earlier.
With food in my stomach I felt much better. As a matter of fact I felt well enough to approach the device.
Lazily I placed my hand over one of the holes and listened to the sounds it made. I didn’t feel like making music, but I had to do something to get my mind off my troubles, if only for a moment.
So I forced myself to play. It was long and sad, but it did the trick and before I even realized it, I had begun singing again, though this time my song wasn’t as bouncy or as happy as it usually was. It was low, quiet and extremely sad.
“Why is you’re song so sad tonight?” Some one asked me as I finished.
I didn’t feel like turning around and simply stood there silently. I could hear who ever it was come closer. Still I continued to gaze at the device.
“Are you not going to talk to me?” He asked.
I knew who it was, but I still didn’t answer and shifted my gaze to the floor.
“Singer…..” He said quietly.
Something touched my shoulder and I flinched away. I didn’t want to go back to the basement yet, but I also didn’t want to deal with other people right now either, so I headed towards the balconies.
“Please don’t run again!” Blake finally called out desperately. “Why do you run from me? What have I done to make you distrust me?”
I stopped. He sounded so depressed from my reaction to him.
There was an awkward silence between us for a while before a third voice broke the mood.
“I see you enjoyed our gift to you.” The third unfamiliar voice stated.
Curious, I turned to see who it was.
Blake stood in front of the device gazing at me with pleading eyes, and a third man stood near the basket. He was even better looking than Blake.
Once again this man had green eyes, with short blond hair combed handsomely over his scalp. His face was perfectly shaped and his clothes resembled something from what a pirate would wear. It was a white shirt with puffy sleeves and tan skin tight pants. Part of his chest showed through a V that shaped the collar of his shirt, a very different outfit when compared to the more formal attire which Blake wore.
I took a deep breath before saying anything. “Thank you.” I whispered.
Blake smiled at me in relief as the other stranger appeared surprised, as though he didn’t expect me to speak.
“Please, stay a little longer. I was just going to watch you play, but I couldn’t help but wonder why you seemed so upset tonight.” Blake took another step towards me.
I inched backwards a step. Seeing this, the man froze in his tracks. I kept my eyes on the blond who stood and seemed to stare at me like an onlooker in a zoo. Noticing the direction of my gaze Blake took the opportunity to introduce the man.
“I’m sorry, but this is a friend of mine. His name is Chase. He wanted to meet you after having heard about yesterday.”
The blond, Chase, then bowed towards me.
It felt awkward just to stand there, so I nodded at him. Suddenly, Chase’s expression turned grave as he squinted his eyes at me. “Forgive me Singer, but may I ask why you appear to have a blemish upon you’re brow?”
I hardly understood that he was referring to a bruise on my forehead which I had gotten after Mrs. Cecelia had slammed me into the cell floor earlier
“What?!” Blake asked, shocked. He took one urgent step towards me to get a closer look before his eyes widened. “You’ve been injured again?” He asked me.
I grabbed my right side and took another step back, only to find the railing of the balcony blocking my path.
“Who is it that’s been injuring you?” Blake took another step towards me.
“You mean this has happened on other accounts?” Chase asked him.
Blake slightly glanced back at the man and nodded. The blond’s expression then changed from a look of wonder to a look of despair. “But who could do such a thing?” Chase wondered aloud.
I began breathing a bit heavier to relieve some of the pain I was feeling in my side. Blake noticed. “Singer, would you allow me to escort you to Doctor Fern’s office again? I’m sure he would be more than happy to address any new wounds you’ve received.”
I recalled how all my pain had seemed to vanish after the doctor treated me last time I was here, so I felt more than happy to agree with that idea and nodded in agreement.
Blake looked relieved yet stayed where he was, though it was obvious he wanted to come closer to me. Chase looked nervous as well, almost like he expected me to do something unusual.
I slowly walked up to the two men and stopped a few steps in front of them. Looking both of them in the eye, I turned and headed towards the door I had only recently come to know of.
The two men looked at each other before following quietly.
It became clear to me that the reason these two were acting so formal around me was probably to make me feel comfortable here. Though I preferred simply to be alone, that in itself was my ultimate comfort.
Exiting the room I finally decided that once I got treated I was going to ask some questions regarding what this place was, as well as who, or what, these people were and what they wanted with me.
