Chapter 9
Shorter chapter, missing from the last and I only just found it.

When I next awoke I heard mother talking to someone. “…Heard her talking to herself and by what she said I guess she’s in shock because she somehow caused the death of the person who rescued her.”
“Are you sure she said that? What exactly did she say?”
“She said it was her fault he was dead and she wished he had let THEM get her back and she wished he wasn’t dead. She also said she had wished he hadn’t have sent her home.”
“That’s probably why she wouldn’t give us the sheet. As I guessed it was her only reminder of the person who rescuer her. Only that’s also why she was so stubborn in letting us have it, because it was the only thing left of him. Trying to take it from her would be in her clouded state like us trying to take the memory from her and she desperately wanted to keep it and not forget him.”
“So you’re saying the sheet is a symbol to her?”
“That and it’s the only material object she has left from him.” I moaned slightly to catch their attention and opened my eyes. They immediately came to my side and crowded around me and the bed, the men hanging back slightly when I cringed.
When only mother and Bonnie were by my side I relaxed and seemed more comfortable. Robert spoke from his spot behind Bonnie, not touching her for he knew other than sexual purposes she hated being touched. “Lisa are you able to speak to us? Can you understand us?”
Oh how different we were, Bonnie and I, when I had Arthur I had constantly wanted him to touch me, not sexually but little reassuring touches, like a brush of his finger tips on my cheek or even just a stroke of his fingers on my hand. But then of course having been blind on most of my time in his ship would help that, needing to know he was there.
I didn’t speak to them just closed my eyes, feeling very strange like I was floating on slightly wavy waves and my head tingled-I realized I was starting to change again. “Lisa answer us please. Do you remember us? Do you know where you are?”
I opened my eyes and licked my dry lips and when they realized what it meant Jules rushed down to the kitchen to get me a drink. While he was gone they continued with the questions but I couldn’t answer, I was barely conscious as my body tried to make me sleep so it could concentrate on the change, not talking to humans! I closed my eyes again. But they flew open again suddenly, my god had I thought that! Had I just thought of my family as humans, was I so removed from them that I was placing them apart from me?
“Lisa what’s wrong?” they had noticed my sudden shocked expression and wide eyes but I didn’t answer or move until Jules returned with a glass and jug of water. I allowed Bonnie to sit me up and raise the glass to my lips, trickling the water in. The coldness shocked me and I gasped but when she went to draw it away I grabbed and held it there until she had the idea.
When it was gone she gave me another before letting me lay back down again. The water curled in my stomach and for a minute I thought I was going to through it back up but then it settled down almost reluctantly and I felt a slow warmth in my limbs-like it was strengthening me slightly.
I curled up on the bed in a ball on my side and looked at them, gripping the sheet tightly in my hands and between my legs as if to make sure they didn’t take it from me while my expression was one of calm shock. “Lisa please talk to me, I can’t stand this silence and horror from you.”
“Mum?” I managed to stutter and all of them grinned at this “Lisa thank god. How are you feeling?” I didn’t speak, how could I tell them I was becoming a Valori? “Ok wrong question. We’ll take it one step at a time. First how are you feeling?”
“Better” I managed softly and shuddered as the change tried to make me go under. I fought it off but fortunately their next question-from Robert-gave me the excuse I needed to roll over away from them and close my eyes “Who is Doc, Lisa?”
“Robert It’s too soon to ask that question!” Bonnie exclaimed in expiration “wait until she is ready!” When they turned back to me I was facing the wall, eyes closed.
