The guesthouse was not so bad from inside. Basia instantly dropped her bag and wished it was still possible to request for a warm bath. She joined Arien who was already by the counter.
“There is just one room available?”
“What do you expect, barging here on the eve of celebration weeks? Be glad we even have this.
Now, our lodging might be simple but we do have standards. You married?”
This is where Basia decided to step in, she didn’t want to lose her only chance on warm bed. Unfortunately Arien had a ready answer, too.
“I’m his sister.” and “We are on our honeymoon.” were said in unison.
Basia’s face fell but Arien kept his charming grin.
After an uncomfortable silence a forced smile spread on the matron’s lips.
“Ah, you are them actor folks. Very well then, enjoy your stay and save the act for stage. I don’t want my customers upset.”
The matron found herself staring after the unexpected couple. She was curious about what business they had together – the girl was a little too plain to be a lady of the night, and the man had something warm in his manner despite the rugged first impression he gave.
Basia almost cried when she saw her hair after Arien was done with it, she wasn’t very vain but her long hair had been one of her better features. Now it was short and the new color made her freckles stand out. Dressed in his clothes she easily passed as a boy.
“I got to say I’m glad you used those rare spell ingredients on me. I wouldn’t look like much in a dress.” Arien said slightly apologically.
The mayor shuffled his papers nervously. He looked shorter in person. Arien wondered if he should nudge Basia awake when the speech began. She was snoring slightly and her head had tilted on his shoulder. They had arrived early on the cafeteria to have breakfast, and were pleasantly surprised to find out the mayor would read the celebration declaration on the very square the cafeteria was located. Neither of them had experienced celebration week before so they weren’t sure what to expect. Arien hoped there were competitions so he could impress some rich man with his skills and get recruited as a guard.
