CHAPTER 9
Large white clouds hid the low-riding sun, near the horizon. A faint blue sky peeked out more often. A hard rain, late last night, made everything smell clean. Kato took a deep breath. A faint scent of lemon caught his attention. He didn't see any lemon trees though.Kato loved early morning, especially this morning. It was the first morning he rushed to the bathroom to relieve himself and that weird pain didn't pull low and deep inside him. He wasn't nauseous and his body didn't ache. He dressed quickly, eager to get out of his rooms. He was looking forward to being outside. He didn't even have to fake his indulgent smile as he listened to Redaku remind him again how important he was and how he needed to ask for help if he didn't feel well.Light dew beaded up on the tall grass, trees and the thick bushes. His loose pant legs were beginning to become damp and he walked a little awkwardly. Luckily, the grass along the worn path was short. They passed over a small ridge and there were few bushes to obscure his view now. Kato slowed when he saw the lake. The surface of the lake was black and perfect, solid, as if frozen. It was much larger than the one Kato had seen from the sun room. A long dock stretched out several feet from the shore. No boats were attached to the dock, but Kato could make out shapes of fishing poles and maybe tackle at the other end of the dock. Long cat tails stretched endlessly along the shore line on either side of the dock. The cool skies were reflected on the surface of the dark waters, only breaking and rippling each time long, graceful white birds landed upon them. A thin mist gathered around the shoreline and dock. They were far from the palace grounds now. They had to take two cruisers to carry everything and everyone. Kato thought they had more people and stuff with them than necessary. He didn't complain though. He was just happy to be outside. They left the cruisers farther up on the edge of the deep valley and walked down, following a well-trodden trail. It ended a few feet ago and now they were just walking through tall grass. Kato assured Shinko he was fine walking this far. They didn't need to, but Shinko thought he'd enjoy it more this way. He needed the exercise anyway. His little mishap with the sun earned him two more days in his rooms, forced to spend much of the time in bed again. It was stupid. He would be more careful from now on. He had to remind himself, every few minutes, that it wasn't weak to admit his limits. He wasn't a big guy with heavy muscle. He was someone who had invasive surgery only a few days ago and was growing organs and tissue to create viable eggs and sustain a fetus. That would be hard on anyone. It didn't make him weak, but it did make him more vulnerable to simple things – like the sun. That did seem stupid. He watched the long-legged birds walking carefully through the cat tails. He could make out their white shapes moving gracefully, capturing small shrimps and fish in their long thin beaks. He recognized the species. On Radekoun, they were protected, there were so few of them anymore.Kato turned and studied the long shoreline. This lake was impressive, taking up the entire valley it nestled in. In the distance cool mist rose from the dark waters along the shoreline, making the white birds appear ghost-like, their delicate glowing shapes moving quietly through the dark waters.Breathing in that lemon scent again, he smiled. He enjoyed the silence, only the quiet tread of footsteps followed behind them. Silence didn't seem to bother Shinko either. That was kind of nice. He walked next to Shinko while the man kept moving closer so they kept brushing against each other every so often. It was annoying but not important enough to call attention to it.He was relieved Shinko didn't insist upon dragging him by the arm the way that Seshimora did, as if Kato was a girl. Shinko seemed to enjoy the fact that Kato was not a girl. Kato glanced over at the tall figure walking close enough to brush against him again.Shinko wore loose-fitting gray matching pants and short-sleeved shirt. His shirt hung open, only fastened by a few of the bottom buttons. Lightly tan skin peeked through his shirt, revealing a hairless lightly-muscled chest. The man's long hair was down, hanging around his shoulders loosely. He looked calm and sure of himself. There was no denying it, the man was handsome.Fishing with Shinko wasn't exactly what Kato thought it would be. He thought they would fish at the smaller lake he had seen Shinko swimming in days ago or maybe take a small boat out on the water somewhere else. This was better. Although Kato wasn't sure what to make of the shelter Shinko arranged. It was soft and frilly, opulent and out of place here.Thick dark metal rose from the ground. It was large enough to house twelve people comfortably. The structure was anchored by ten strong posts, set in a circle. They climbed high and were joined at the top by three round rings, each growing smaller, linked together by metal rope, rising in the middle to a high peak. A canopy of thick fabric, dark gray with tan stripes, covered it.What got Kato's attention though was the thick blankets and damn frilly pillows layered underneath it. A small, shin-height round table was nestled off to one side. Large, flat pillow rested around it. A fine mesh of white fabric surrounded the structure, running on a track along the perimeter of the pavilion. It was open on the side that faced the lake. Heavy fabric, a lighter gray that the canopy, rested on another outer track. It was gathered in two large bunches towards the back of the opening. Why set up this particular shelter if they're supposed to be fishing? All they needed was a long dock and a couple of poles. The only explanation Kato could think of made him uncomfortable. Kato chewed on his lower lip. How many people did Shinko bring here to “fish”? “We're not fishing?” Kato asked, gesturing to the pavilion in front of him.Shinko slowed his gait. The tall man turned his head slightly and murmured, “Prince Seshimora made it very clear that you do not know your limits,” while leaning back to watch Kato's ass. What? Kato stopped abruptly and the tall grass snapped behind him, popping him on the rear. He jumped and grimaced.“Your brother is an ass,” Kato hissed. He turned to face Shinko. “What else did he say?”Shinko stopped. The man crossed his arms in front of himself and smiled. He tilted his head and took his time answering, his eyes roaming Kato's stiff form. “You're absolutely beautiful when you're angry, Prince Kato.”“That's what you'd say,” Kato scowled. “What else did he say?”Shinko's smile never faltered, but his eyes did stop roaming. He met angry eyes and said carefully, “I should keep you out of the sun,” his eyes moved to the canopy, blankets and pillows before he finished, “by any means necessary.”Kato frowned. That didn't sound exactly like Seshimora. His eyes narrowed as he said, “I came here to catch fish.”All of Shinko's teeth were showing now. His eyes searched Kato's face. “Maybe we'll both get lucky then,” he said seriously.Shockingly enough, the man didn't leer though. Kato felt his cheeks pinking up anyway. How in the hell did this man make him blush so easily? He jerked when he heard Noberu clear his throat. Honestly, he was hoping the caveman would have left this job with Rato, his second in command, instead. It felt weird spending time with Shinko when he knew Noberu didn't like the man. He decided to make the best of it.“I'm luckier than most,” Kato said stubbornly to no one in particular. He didn't glance at Noberu at all. His blush was fading. He started walking out in front of Shinko, ignoring them all. He was at the dock quickly. He heard commotion behind him. He climbed the stairs slowly and turned when he reached the top. Shinko was following him while Noberu and the rest of his guard set up the containers near the canopy. Several guards followed closely behind Shinko. Kato moved out of Shinko's way. He turned and followed him to the end of the pier, hearing the boards squeaking and moaning beneath him. He ran his hand along the smooth weathered wood, following the railing. He glanced up.Shinko was at the end of the pier. Kato ran out of railing and dropped his hand. He reached the end of the pier and stood next to Shinko. He watched the man's features smooth out and watched the rise and fall of the man's chest when he took several deep breaths. Shinko turned to look at Kato, a small smile on his face. His eyes dropped to Kato's stomach. He seemed to be concentrating on something, and it wasn't sexual.Having anyone stare at him should have made him feel uncomfortable, but it didn't. A lot of people stared at his stomach now. He figured all of them had probably seen the live feed or the countless specials pretty much every station on many interested planets created from the film of his procedure. He was learning to get over it.Kato waived his hand in front of his stomach to get Shinko's attention. Shinko blinked, lifting his eyes. Kato gestured to the lake in front of them. “Why is the water so dark? It's like blackness”Shinko followed Kato's small hand. “This water doesn't move, little feeds into and nothing out of it. This is the largest of the lakes I commissioned. It rests at the bottom of his valley,” Shinko said as if distracted. “The algae is dark and gives the illusion the water is black.” He started to sit at the edge of the pier. He gestured to the place next to him and sat.Kato looked back at the end of the pier where he knew Noberu would be standing. Noberu's face was expressionless. Kato carefully sat next to Shinko. They weren't quite touching. He watched as Shinko rolled his pant legs up. He took his shoes off. The man leaned over and did the same to Kato's pant legs and shoes. Kato didn't object.Shinko hung his long legs over the end of the pier. He allowed his feet to touch the surface of the water and his legs slowly sank lower. He looked over at Kato, “It's comfortable. Try it.” Shinko started to swirl his legs around slowly in the water. From here, the mist didn't look as thick. Shinko leaned back on his hands.Kato dipped his feet in. He was much smaller than Shinko and the water only reached his ankles. The mist was cool and he could feel a very slight dampness around his legs. The water was refreshing. Kato leaned forward a little. The water was clear. He frowned.Shinko glanced over at Kato and then at Kato's feet as well. “Black algae grows along the bottom of the lake,” he said quietly and leaned back again. “I could add more bottom feeders and they'd clean it up, but I like this endless darkness,” Shinko said languorously, watching Kato through half-lidded eyes. He arched his back and stretched his legs out straight in front of himself and sighed. The man's dark hair draped behind him like a curtain of darkness.Kato was still frowning. He eased himself backwards and brought his legs up. He felt a tightness but not pain. He carefully wrapped his arms around his legs, folding them close to his body. The chill was settling into his damp feet and legs. He would have to wait until his feet dried before he put his shoes on. “It's beautiful,” Kato whispered.Shinko turned his body, bending towards Kato and smiled. Shinko was handsome, just short of beautiful. He was elegant with long graceful limbs. The man's skin had a warm glow in this light, reminding Kato how pale he was in comparison. Kato stared at the man's taut arms and stomach. Shinko wasn't strong like Seshimora, but he had his own strength.Kato wrapped his arms tighter around his legs and watched the man in silence. He didn't know what to make of the man. He wasn't nearly as obnoxious as had been in the past. He watched Shinko move closer to him and felt the man's lips press again his. Kato thought he wanted it, but it didn't feel right. He didn't close his eyes or lean in. Shinko pulled away and stared.Something was bothering Kato. Shinko always got a reaction from him. Kato looked out in the darkness of the water, watching several graceful white birds taking off.“You're very quiet, Prince Kato,” Shinko murmured, his eyes following the birds as well. “Was this a mistake?” He glanced at Kato worriedly. “Are you unwell?”Kato said nothing. He closed his eyes and breathed in deeply. There wasn't any citrus smell here. It smelled of earth and wet foliage, much like swamps on his home planet. It was surprising. The damp smell of a rain lingered. Kato smoothed his pant legs, unraveling the fabric. He was grateful Shinko was now silent. He didn't mean to act like this.Something was bothering him. He couldn't bring himself to talk to his father or Redaku about it. They lied by omission. Why would they tell him the truth now? He could probably talk to Fusako about it, but he felt foolish for his reaction at the meeting. “My sister,” Kato breathed barely above a whisper. Kato didn't look at Shinko. It didn't really matter. It was all in the past, but he couldn't let it go yet. He turned to look at Shinko. The man was watching him cautiously. “You knew about her?”Shinko nodded, uncertain.“Do you know,” Kato started and fell silent. Kato scooted away when Shinko reached out to him. “My father did he....alone?” Kato couldn't even get the words out right. He made enough sense. He had to know if his mother helped. She couldn't tell him anymore and he didn't trust his father to tell him the truth.“This was a mistake,” Shinko said and started to stand. Kato reached over and gripped his loose sleeve. Kato shook his head. Shinko knew. He remembered the man's smugness right before Fusako showed her metal during that horrible meeting. Kato seemed to be the only one surprised by his father's silence. Everyone in that room knew except him. He was certain of it. Didn't the man understand this was important? Kato couldn't talk. He pleaded with his eyes and waited, gripping the man's sleeve tightly and pulling it towards himself.Shinko let himself be pulled towards Kato. He was studying Kato, his face expressionless. He shook himself and gently pulled his arm free. He met Kato's eyes and said, “Your father killed your sister,” he said quietly and added when Kato opened his mouth, “That's all you need to know.” Kato closed his mouth. He nodded and stood, brushing his bottom off carefully. He backed away from the edge of the pier. Shinko continued to watch him in silence. He didn't have any tears left. His mother may not have helped, but she didn't stop it. That's all he needed to know. He regretted saying anything. Shinko did answer his question, just not the answer he wanted to hear. Kato moved over towards the tackle and fishing poles. He did enjoy being outside. He did like spending time with Shinko. He didn't like how easily the man embarrassed him, but he liked the man. It was clear Shinko was the kind of man you loved or loved to hate. He wanted to stay. Kato studied the poles. From a distance they all looked like fishing poles. He could tell now that the longest, thickest pole was actually an umbrella. Kato smiled. Apparently everyone had been told about his difficulty with the sun. He had received numerous lectures from his doctor, Redaku and even his father, but surprisingly nothing from Noberu. Kato picked up a fishing pole and stared at it. He looked over at Shinko. “I understand,” he murmured. Shinko nodded once, abruptly. He stood and walked over to Kato.“I am sorry,” Shinko said taking the pole from Kato. Kato didn't say anything. He looked at the pole resting in Shinko's strong hands.
“It's fine,” Kato heard himself say and grimaced. He sounded just like Seshimora. God, how far had he fallen? He wasn't fine with it. It might have happened a long time ago for everyone else, but it felt like it had only happened a few days ago for Kato.It was awkward. Kato took a breath and decided to put it behind him for now. He couldn't solve anything and he wasn't about to have some soul-searching conversation with Shinko. He shook himself and gestured to the pole and said in as light a voice as he could muster, “So what do I put on the end of this string to catch fish?”Shinko smiled. “Anything you want,” he murmured, moving an unruly lock of Kato's hair from his face. He touched Kato's chin lightly and searched Kato's eyes. “Will you be okay?”It made him feel a little better. Kato gave Shinko a faint smile and whispered, just loud enough for Shinko to hear, “Yes.”Shinko leaned down and kissed Kato lightly again. It was nice and warm. Shinko held the pole horizontally between them and it pushed a little into Kato's stomach. He moved away and let out a shaky breath. Shinko was gripping the pole tightly in his hands, his eyes opening slowly. He looked disappointed.Kato grinned in spite of himself. “I'd actually like to fish.” He moved back a little more. He liked the kiss but couldn't do anything more with Noberu watching. It felt too weird now. Besides, he was pretty certain Shinko had no qualms against making out, naked or otherwise, in front of an audience. Kato couldn't do it. Well, not again anyway. He didn't want to give the man any more encouragement. Shinko was behaving himself. Kato figured it was because of his surgery, but who knows?Shinko rolled his eyes. “Pity,” he murmured. He walked over to the tackle. He helped Kato pick out a pole and attach a lure. He explained the technique of casting several times before he let Kato try it. After Kato grimaced from pain from casting it once, Shinko reeled it in and attached a little ball, he called a bobber, nearly a foot above the lure. It annoyed Kato at first. He wasn't that familiar with fishing with a pole, but he was pretty certain only children used a bobber. Shinko assured him it was also so they could sit comfortably together. In the end, Kato relented. He had to remind himself, limits. It was stupid to take the chance of prolonging healing just because he wanted to cast. The guards brought comfortable folding chairs for them to sit in.They sat in silence for nearly thirty minutes before Kato saw his bobber move, disturbing the calm surface. Small ripples moved Shinko's bobber. Shinko's quiet voice was extremely close to him, “When you see it bob again, pull the line sharply. It helps to stand at the same time,” he said standing quickly himself. “Keep the line tight. You need to hook it.”Kato nodded never taking his eyes off the bobber. He waited for a few more seconds and grew really excited when it bobbed again He stood as quickly as he thought he should, jerking the line at the same time. He felt it jump in his hands. He started to turn the reel, feeling it becoming taut. “What,” was all Kato got out before Shinko's arms enveloped him from behind.Shinko's wrapped one hand around the pole and the other over Kato's hand. He was leaning over Kato. “I don't want you to hurt yourself. I'll help,” the man's smooth voice was just above Kato's head.Shinko helped him raise the pole steadily until it was almost too high for Kato and stopped. The line was still taut. He helped Kato reel as he lowered the pole. Shinko repeated the action several times until Kato could see some silver, fish-shaped object being pulled closer to them on the surface. It jerked erratically now, but Shinko kept the pole steady. Shinko lowered himself behind Kato. He brought a net out and hung it over the edge. “It's easier to use a net to pull it up,” Shinko said pulling the pole a little higher. It set Kato's balance off. He had to struggle with the pole since the fish was dancing erratically in the air now, inches from the pole. “Your guard would kill me if you fell in,” he said lightly as he managed the pole and snagged the fish in the net.The fish looked angry, while it gasped and jerked. It was large, larger now that Kato could see it clearly. If the net had been any smaller, it wouldn't have fit. It had several thick antennas around it's mouth like some kind of wild cat. It was silver around its face growing slighter darker toward the tail. It was really thick in the middle. Kato didn't recognize the species, but he didn't know fish on either planet.“It's a bottom feeder. They don't normally come to the surface to feed,” he said looking over at Kato for a moment before turning his attention to the jerking fish. “It's big,” Shinko said sounding impressed. Kato smiled. He needed help reeling it in, but he was happy with it. He had caught fish with a bow before. This was a new experience for him.Somehow Shinko had time to put a thick glove on. He grabbed the line, dropping the net entirely. He turned to his guard. He jerked the fish into the air and used it to gesture to his guard, “Hiro, please snap a picture of Prince Kato and his first fishing experience.”Kato didn't have time to open his mouth to protest before Shinko pulled him closer and turned them both to the face their guard. Kato was still holding the fishing pole. Shinko pulled him even closer and Kato couldn't help the surprise and irritation that blanketed his features. Shinko wrapped one arm around Kato, pulling him tightly to him, while the other held Kato's fish high enough to be in the picture.Shinko's guard, Hiro, snapped a picture with an incredibly small devise he pulled from his pocket. He took a couple more before Kato growled out, “Happy now?”Shinko laughed. He leaned towards Kato and spoke into his ear quietly, “I'd prefer different pictures of you, Beautiful, but this will have to do – for now,” Shinko purred the last. Kato turned bright red and tried to move away. He relaxed when no one reacted.“Do you want to keep it to taste?” Shinko still hadn't released him but he lowered the fish. Kato shook his head, hating the hot feeling in his cheeks. He moved away from Shinko. Shinko lowered the fish, stepping roughly on it. He turned to Kato, “Would you get my pliers from my tackle box, Prince Kato?” Kato nodded. He found the pliers quickly and handed them to Shinko. The fish still vigorously fought, trying in vain to free itself. It's mouth opened as if screaming. It was making strange mewing sounds like a cat. It was weird. Kato watched quietly as Shinko shifted his foot and used the pliers quickly, removing the hook. The man stood, stretching. He lifted his foot and they watched the fish take exactly three frantic flops before flinging itself into the dark waters. Water splashed up onto the deck. The silver outline disappeared quickly.“A fine fish,” Shinko murmured. He glanced over a Kato. “That particular breed bears live young. It was pregnant.”Kato watched the waters searching the darkness for the released fish. “What?” he said absently. “Your fish should bear live young soon,” Shinko said, staring out into the dark waters.Kato looked sharply at Shinko. “You were rough with it.”Shinko shrugged, unconcerned. “Its barbs sting. It's a tough fish.” He glanced over at Kato, a smile curling the corners of his lips. “That breed is well-known for it's poor disposition.”Kato narrowed his eyes. He wasn't stupid. Pregnant...poor disposition. Whatever. He got it.“I didn't hurt it,” Shinko murmured.Kato didn't believe him, but it was just a fish. Shinko checked his line and hook again. Shinko cast Kato's line out without effort. He handed the pole back to Kato. Drawing his eyebrows down, Kato murmured, “Thanks. I can do that next time.”Eventually the mist burned away. The clouds seems to evaporate as the temperature rose. The wind picked up a little. It was actually nice until Shinko set up the umbrella for Kato, setting it into a base that just appeared. Kato huddled under the umbrella and cursed his body for being weak. He felt stupid. Kids and old people used umbrellas. He got over his annoyance quickly. Kato proudly helped hold his second and third fish for the camera. The fourth one was little on the small side, so he released it without Shinko's help and without a picture.Shinko spent a lot of time fishing and he didn't even get a single bite. It was funny as hell. Kato couldn't help himself. He made a few obnoxious comments and spent the last hour smiling, glancing over at Shinko, laughing with his eyes. The man took it in stride. It was entirely possible that Shinko's easy manner had more to do with Kato's willingness to let Shinko “help” Kato land, reel fish in and hold fish for the camera more than anything else. Shinko's hands really didn't have any business on Kato's rear and his embrace certainly lingered longer than necessary, but Kato didn't care and he didn't think too much about it.After a few of hours, Shinko rose. He reeled his line in and turning to Kato said, “It's time for a break. You need to rest and eat. Prince Seshimora will be quite annoyed if I forgot my duties,” he said smiling openly.Kato blinked and looked around. “We can eat here. I'm already out of the sun,” he said pointing up at the small canopy. “It'll be nice here. I've been on my butt the whole time, I'm resting now.” Plus he didn't want to go to Shinko's little harem shack. Leaning down and carefully avoiding the umbrella, Shinko gently took Kato's fishing pole. He straightened and started reeling the line in.Kato huffed. He didn't like being ignored. He didn't like being manipulated either. He knew damn well why Shinko set up the damn frilly canopy behind them. “You don't appear to be very lucky, Prince Shinko,” Kato said angrily. They both knew what he meant. “You didn't even get a bite.” Kato immediately regretted it. Why did he always antagonize people?Shinko set Kato's pole next to his own. He slowly walked over to Kato with a warm smile on his face. He pulled the umbrella from its base easily and closed it. He leaned down, setting the umbrella at Kato's feet. He was close enough to Kato to touch. Kato shivered feeling the man's breath against his neck, “Is that a challenge?” Kato looked down and saw Shinko's dark hair cascading like a small waterfall right into his lap.Kato turned his head sharply and nearly jerked at having the dark-haired man's face so close. What happened to personal space? The man was leering now. He pursed his lips before murmuring jokingly into the man's surprised face, “I'm not worried, mighty fisherman.” Shinko chuckled standing. Kato stood, leaning over he poked the man in his stomach and grunted, “Just keep your pole to yourself.” Shinko laughed openly and Kato blushed in spite of himself. “Come on and let's go sit on your girlie pillows,” Kato growled. The handsome man was still chuckling when he helped Kato to a large, flat pillow and sat on the pillow next to Kato and not across from him on the other side of the table. Kato started to tell the man to move when servers just appeared and started to set up the table with drinks, fruit, thin sliced bread, little fish and cold cuts. Kato thanked them absently, frowning. He didn't want to eat anything, but he was a little thirsty. He eyed Shinko expecting the man to just shove his hand down Kato's pants when he was distracted. The man read his mind because he leaned over too closely and a warm, moist whisper dampened Kato's ear, “I'll keep my hands to myself.” Kato's eyes widened and he drew back, glaring at the man. “But you can bite me anytime you feel like it, beautiful,” the man said through a leer. Yep. Pervert was back. He probably shouldn't have encouraged him. Kato ignored the man. It was difficult when he was blushing still, but he distracted himself by grabbing the goblet of water already beaded with condensation. It was warming up. Some of the contents sloshed out, dropping into Kato's lap. He ignored that too and drank quickly.Staring at the fruit, Kato contemplated getting some. It was probably a bad idea though. He'd have another injection in just a couple of hours. It never took long for the medication to drain him and make him nauseous. Afternoons were hard on him now. He was planning on asking if the injections could be moved to evening instead. Out of the corner of his eye, he could see Shinko shaking his head. He started to say something rude, when the man spooned fruit onto Kato's plate. Kato turned to him, his eyebrow raised.“You know you wanted some,” the man said through a grin.Kato rolled his eyes and shrugged. He took a bite of the bright red melon. It was crisp, sweet and too juicy. It's juices started to drip down his chin. He looked for a napkin to wipe it up before it dribbled onto his clothing. He couldn't find one and started to bring his arm up to use his sleeve. He froze when Shinko started licking down his chin and throat. The licking moved to nibbling and Kato panted, “You said you'd keep your hands to yourself.”Shinko moved away. He was grinning, foolishly now. “I never said I wouldn't bite,” and then he did, lightly with sharp teeth.Kato stared at the man's lop-sided grin for a full minute before he grumbled, “Okay pervert,” and pointing to the other side of the table, grunted out as lightly as he could, “over there now.”Shinko's lips twitched, but he moved without complaint. He stared at Kato until Kato's face hurt. Dropping his eyes to his plate, he ate in silence knowing full well the tall man was staring at him the entire time. Kato drank some water and asked for more without raising his eyes.“You are very beautiful, Kato.” Kato nodded without looking up. Why couldn't anyone ever call him handsome? Really was that too much to ask? He used to be called pretty when he was younger. Beautiful started just three years ago. What the hell would people say in a few more years?Dropping his eyes to his lap, Kato plucked at the fabric of the pillow he sat on. It was luxurious and cool to the touch. He didn't care for the pattern. It was feminine. He smoothed his hand across it, petting it absently. He glanced across the table, just to be assured Shinko was still across from him.“You're a natural with a pole.” Kato looked up to him and waited for the leer, but it didn't come. “I really enjoyed fishing with you. Most people aren't comfortable with silence. They fill the space with noise. It keeps the fish away.”Kato smiled. “I told you I wanted to fish.” Shinko nodded. It felt good do something normal, especially with Shinko. He didn't think he'd have the patience for sitting and just casting, but he was wrong. He'd seen pictures of men fishing in hip deep running water, holding graceful long poles with thick string coiled fantastically in the air. He couldn't remember what it was called, but he was hoping he'd get a chance to do that.He was about to ask the man about using different poles, maybe fishing in a small craft, when the man looked off absently. Kato watched him in silence. Shinko didn't seem to really be the serious type, but Kato felt the need to say something. “I can't imagine what it's like,” Kato murmured. Shinko turned to him, frowning. “Ascension,” Kato whispered.Shinko shrugged. He touched the condensation beading along the outside of his glass. He moved his finger in a circle and large drops of water ran and pooled in a growing circle around the bottom of the glass. He picked it up and sipped, watching Kato carefully.“I tried to talk to Seshimora about it. It was...it was a disaster,” Kato murmured, shaking his head. He flashed on the raw pain in the large man's eyes. He had to shake his head to clear the image. He never wanted to see that again.Shinko abruptly set the glass down and barked a painful laugh. “I can imagine.”They sat in awkward silence. Kato wiped his eyes. His hand returned to smoothing the fabric of the pillow next to him. It had a pebbled texture, soft and patterned. He looked up and met Shinko's eyes briefly, before nervously glancing at their guard and servers. He leaned forward slightly and whispered, “He told me he killed Takimore.”“It was quick work,” the man said in agreement, almost indifferently. He was squeezing his glass and the sleek muscles in his forearm flexed. He took a took another drink. He set the glass down in the puddle, spreading it even wider. “And televised. All direct challenges are,” Shinko added after seeing Kato's frown.“You watched it?” Kato breathed in horror.“It would be disrespectful not to, Prince Kato.” The man actually seemed surprised by Kato's reaction. He opened his mouth to say something and then closed it. He frowned when Kato looked away.Kato felt his stomach flutter. He had a image of Seshimora completing a roundhouse. He remembered the shock – the way the other man's body snapped back and fell listlessly in a heap. He never saw the man move again, never say him get up. Kato's heart was beginning to speed up. “I..I saw Seshimora spar. He's...” Kato said miserably, the words dying on his tongue when Shinko nodded. He was gripping the soft, yielding fabric in both hands now. His fingers were beginning to hurt.“He is formidable. Takimore was his only direct challenge,” Shinko said seriously.Oh God, he didn't want to watch Shinko die. Kato stared at him helplessly. He could feel his eyes beginning to water. He croaked, “I,” don't want you to die, he thought, but he couldn't say it. His throat closed shut.Shinko smiled warmly and his face lit up. Kato stared. He'd never seen a smile like that. Shinko was handsome, his teeth were so white, each feature perfect. He easily moved to beautiful with that smile. “I am touched by your concern.” He cocked his head to the side, watching Kato carefully. “Ascension is not always reached through direct challenge.”He was obviously saying more and Kato immediately thought of the toxin used on Seshimora and indirectly himself. He felt sick and looked away towards the lake. It didn't seem as perfect now. He heard Shinko move and wasn't surprised when the man sat by him again.“It is the reality of all Kitsurin Royalty, Prince Kato,” he said quietly, absently looking at the lake. Kato nodded. He didn't understand, not really, but he couldn't complain anymore. He couldn't deny what his own family did. He wasn't in a position to judge anyone.A blinking light and a sharp popping sound got his attention. He looked over at Shinko's hand. The man held a small camera, no larger than Kato's palm and thin. He touched the screen several times and set it down flat. Kato looked at the image that blinked a few inches from the camera. It was the first picture Hiro took of Kato, Shinko and the angry fish. It was three dimensional. Kato smiled. The image blinked to the next automatically.Kato studied the image. He was nestled tightly against Shinko's tall elegant form. The man held the fish high. Kato looked small and delicate next to him. He didn't like that.He released the fabric and unclenched his hands. He stopped and leaned in closer studying the image, immediately thankful the images weren't moving, only stills. Kato frowned, he turned the camera and the image moved with it. Kato pointed to his own ass and asked, “Why are you touching my ass?” He didn't understand how light was bent to capture the back of images. He never paid attention to stuff like this during his studies. And he didn't really care right now either. Shinko didn't answer. He met the smiling eyes. The next image blinked and Kato frowned. “You're squeezing,” he sputtered. How had he not noticed that when the pictures were taken?Shinko was laughing now. It was clear in this image the man was squeezing his ass and Kato seemed pretty damn happy about it. That wasn't true. He was happy about the fish dammit! He glared at the man and the stupid man laughed harder.Kato continued to glare. “Stop it,” Kato growled. He punched Shinko in the arm and the man's shoulders were shaking now. The man wiped the corner of his eyes. Kato was about to punch the man again when he had a sudden thought, “What are you going to do with those pictures?”“You want copies?” Shinko asked and barked a laugh when Kato's eyes widened.Kato stared at him. “Your father is already pissed off at me. He thinks I'm a whore.”Shinko sobered immediately. He turned the camera off. “He doesn't. We both know why he's upset.” Kato was chewing on his bottom lip now. It was true. Seshimora was the man's favorite. Shinko was still serious when he leaned in and murmured, “I chose this location for a reason. It's impossible to get coverage here. I carefully chose all of the help today. They are loyal to me,” Shinko said, watching Kato carefully. He smiled then, showing too many teeth, “I told you I don't kiss and tell, Prince Kato.”Kato stared. He really wanted to believe the man. Kato looked at his own guard. He knew Noberu didn't trust them all. He was surprised the man kept them around. The big man was pissed Shinko got into his rooms. Kato knew now he wouldn't have allowed it.“I was hoping you'd need coercion,” Shinko said touching another box-shaped item on the table. A low whirling started and a heavy gray curtain started to close around them. Kato looked at fabric screen, frowning. He watched his guard and Shinko's flanking the structure, but no one entered. Heavy fabric started to loosen and stretch, drawn by a motor and following the track. It would have been hot but there were several sections of the heavy fabric that were actually a lighter mesh to allow air to move. Kato felt a breeze, the whirling sound didn't stop. He looked up. There was a small fan at the top. It wasn't visible from the outside. He stared at it longer and realized the canopy had an extra layered top with slits on two sides. It must let the heat escape. It was comfortable but a little too dark for Kato's comfort.“Shinko,” Kato said in warning when the man's hand moved to his thigh. “Stop it.”Shinko moved his hand back and murmured, “That's right, I promised – no hands.” He leaned over and nibbled on Kato's earlobe. Kato's eyes widened. Damn. That felt good. He shook himself. He didn't want to have another conversation about this with King Yoshi. He wasn't comfortable with any of this. He pushed Shinko away. “Stop,” he hissed. It didn't matter that it felt good. He'd just have to wait.“What?” Shinko sounded annoyed. “Letting me pleasure you doesn't make you a whore, Kato.”Kato could feel the blush moving down his face now. He dropped hands in to his lap. Crap even his hands were red. It's a good thing he couldn't die from embarrassment. Why was he letting this man get to him like this? “You're being ridiculous,” the man snorted, moving away now. Kato growled at him. Stupid fucker. He didn't have to explain himself. He told the man no, so he just needed to back off. He glared ahead now, completely ignoring the handsome man near him.Shinko reached over and grasped Kato's chin tightly. He turned his face and watched Kato cautiously. Kato growled again ready to hurt the man. “I'm getting mixed signals from you.” “No, you're not,” Kato growled, pulling away from him “You're not some kind of sex god, so stop it.” The man's siblings made it clear no one refused Shinko. Well, he could and would. He crossed his arms across his chest and stuck his chin out pugnaciously. “I understand you're afraid, but Kato-” “I'm not,” Kato said too loudly, interrupting the older man angrily. He didn't have to explain himself but he didn't like being called a coward. “You don't understand...I'm supposed to,” he murmured searching Shinko's face. He was expecting the man to ridicule him so he quickly added, “I was supposed to marry a woman. I've never had any interest in men before.” He finished snorting a burst of air out through his nose. The older man stared at him, confused. Kato watched him open his mouth as he if he was going to say something, only to close it again. The man looked like a fish. He wasn't afraid. Stupid fucker. Why couldn't anyone leave him with a small shred of dignity.Shinko huffed in disbelief and stared. “I would never hurt you.” He seemed offended now.“You're not listening. It doesn't matter.” Kato glared. “Just stop.”“But you like it,” Shinko said his head tilting to the side. “You're just afraid. I told you we won't go that far.” He shrugged and said, “It wouldn't be right anyway.” Kato had no idea what made the man say that because he couldn't possibly mean that.It was Kato's turn to stare. He was quickly searching his brain for another excuse and then, “Your father...” Shinko snorted. “My father is an ass. He huffs and puffs, but he adores you. He wouldn't hurt you, Kato. I think he finds you quite entertaining.”“What?” “Kato, you will give that old fool grandchildren. Of course, he's fond of you. Besides, he's never liked docile people. He is a big bully. He respects you – you stood up to him,” he said, tilting Kato's head to the side to get a better look at his eyes. “I'm not going to hurt you,” he repeated firmly. Kato believed him. It was all just embarrassing as hell. And then Shinko added quietly, “I'll stop if you tell me to.”Kato grasped Shinko's larger hand in his own. He drew it from his face and let it rest in between them. Shinko's smile froze when Kato said, “The men in my family always took women to bed. This doesn't seem right.”“Do you think less of me because I enjoy the pleasures men and women have to offer?” Kato looked at him sharply. Actually, he realized he never even thought about it. Shinko was just Shinko. A pervert, really. He shook his head. “Then why do you think less of yourself for feeling the same way?”Kato was silent for a long time. Only the motor drawing the curtain could be heard. It stopped abruptly, leaving only a small opening facing the lake. It was dark inside and Kato started to feel warm. Only the faint noise from the fan above was distracting. He didn't even hear birds now. He looked around and realized the fabric kept the sun out and muffled sound. He didn't need to think about his answer. He just didn't want to answer this question. He forced himself to meet the man's eyes. “I don't want my father to be ashamed of me,” Kato said quietly, his voice filled with pain. Even though he knew his father was a liar, it still mattered what the man thought. It shouldn't. But the man was still his father. Now he knew the man was a murderer too, and still it didn't matter. He wanted the man to love him. He wanted the man to be proud of him. He wanted to hate the man, and couldn't. King Miyazaki would always be his father.“I know some of your history. I've seen the way he watches you,” Shinko said shaking his head. He frowned and said, “He is ashamed of himself, not you. You've made more personal sacrifices than he ever will. You have nothing to be ashamed of Kato.”Kato wanted to believe him so desperately, he ignored his inner voice screaming at him to leave. He let the man wrap his long arms around him. He let the man snuggle up to him. He stiffened a little when he felt him smelling his hair. It made him feel like the woman. Hell, he did that himself.Shinko wrapped one hand behind Kato's neck. He expected the man to kiss him. He didn't. He made eye contact and whispered against Kato's mouth, “I can't wait to have you underneath me, panting with need, begging me to pound into you harder.”“Oh my God,” Kato breathed pushing the man away. “Why do you have to say crap like that? I already told you I'm not really comfortable with this.” He pushed harder while Shinko held him firmly. “I am undone around you, Beautiful,” he said in a long sigh. Kato blinked and stopped struggling. Shinko grinned and breathed heavily, “And I love making you blush,” against Kato's warm lips. He didn't give Kato a chance to react and started nibbling on Kato's chin and moved to his neck. “Just kissing, just,” the man murmured against Kato's chin. He followed his chin to a small pale ear. It felt nice. “This,” the man eased his tongue into Kato's pink ear. Kato found himself giggling, in spite of himself. It tickled. “We're not having sex,” Kato said, distracted. He leaned in trying to capture Shinko's clever mouth. Kissing was okay. Kissing was safe. “I know,” Shinko breathed between nibbles along the back of Kato's neck. “I can't penetrate you until after you've conceived our first child,” he mumbled through a mouthful of skin. His nibbling stopped when Kato jerked away, hissing in pain. Great, he'd have teeth marks.“What?” Kato's voice wobbled, rising higher until it squeaked in panic. “What the hell are you saying?” He didn't sound like himself. He lost his mind for a minute. Kissing was not okay. Kissing led to other stuff. There was no way he was letting the man fuck him now or ever, he could get pregnant anytime. How could he forget? The medical team was a little unclear on how long it would take before he his body was ready. They thought it wouldn't be for a few weeks but could he take that chance? He knew small tears could let seminal fluid into his abdomen. It could make a baby the natural way. Without genetic manipulation, it could be born female. He wouldn't allow anyone to kill his baby.Shinko groaned sitting up straighter. He looked at Kato in annoyance. “Prince Kato, you don't watch the news? You saw nothing of your procedure?”Kato shook his head miserably.Shinko chuckled, shaking his head. “At the completion of your surgery, your physician instructed Seshimora and myself that you could not have penetrative sex until after Conception,” he said his frown deepening to concern as Kato's eyes grew larger and his face paled.“Fuck,” Kato gulped air hurriedly, hyperventilating now. His face paled further. It was even worse that he thought. Hell, did it go out live? Did everyone hear it? He wanted to die right now. Why didn't someone else tell him sooner? “I think...” he struggled with the words. He wanted to ask if everyone heard but his brain stopped working. He wouldn't survive this humiliation. His vision was beginning to gray.Shinko helped Kato's unresisting body lie back. “Do we need to send for the transport?”And inform everyone how stupid he was, how he could overreact and maybe cause himself to pass out? Fuck no! Kato hurriedly shook his head closing his eyes as if in pain. He felt Shinko start to rise and grabbed him instantly. He didn't want this to get back to anyone. If they thought he couldn't even handle this, hell they'd take everything away from him. As embarrassing as this was, he had to get out. He had to do stuff that made him feel less like a freak. He had to. Once pregnant, he'd make no decisions for himself. He'd have no privacy, no life.Kato opened his eyes and met Shinko's concerned face. The man moved Kato's hair out of his eyes. He leaned down, “Are you certain?” Kato jerked his head once in a nod. Shinko seemed uncertain. He glanced at the wall of fabric and then over in Noberu's direction. He smiled and Kato started to get worried for other reasons. He tried to sit up too quickly and Shinko had to help him lie back again. Kato let out a string of curses that had Shinko throwing his head back, roaring. His laugh was wonderful. Kato stared up at the man, quiet now, his eyes wide.“Such a poor disposition,” the man murmured fondly, running his long fingertips along Kato's cheek to his lips where they stopped. The man's hair cascaded around his face, obscuring everything but his tan face and warm eyes. He peppered Kato's eyes, cheeks and stopped at his chin. Kato felt teeth this time. The man drew back, still smiling fondly. The handsome man started to finger Kato's shirt buttons. He unbuttoned the top to before Kato stopped him. They had an audience. There was no way he was getting naked. The man leaned in close to Kato's ear and whispered, “I just want to see.”“See what?” Kato breathed holding the man's larger hand in both of his.“Your belly, Beautiful,” the man murmured. His hand stopped moving. He drew back, still smiling fondly. His eyes dropped down low. Kato frowned. “I want to see where my children will grow.”What harm could come of that? Hell, the man had seen what his insides looked like. He had already seen the tissue that one day would nurture the child who would take the Twin Throne. Kato released the man's hand. It was amazing how quickly the man could undue all of Kato's shirt buttons with only one hand. The man must practice a lot.Warm air brushed Kato's stomach and then warm fingertips traced a small red pucker near Kato's belly button. Kato shivered. Shinko started to push Kato's pants down past his hips. Kato stiffened. Fucker was getting him naked! He lied. He grabbed Shinko's wrist tightly, “Shinko,” he whispered in warning, letting anger color his voice.Shinko wasn't even looking at his face. The man leaved over and pressed his warm lips against the red raised skin near Kato's right hip. He licked lightly across Kato's quivering belly to the matching redness near Kato's left hip. Kato hissed, releasing Shinko's wrist. He moved backwards, like a crab until he felt warm hands grasping his hips tightly and pulling him forwards. Kato felt panic and bucked, trying to loosen the man's grip. He wouldn't cry out for help. He was convinced Noberu wouldn't just hurt the man, he'd kill him. And then someone would kill Noberu. He hissed again when the familiar pain returned. He grimaced and stopped moving, panting.“You hurt yourself,” Shinko said angrily. “Why didn't you just tell me stop?” But the fucker wasn't letting Kato's hips go. He dragged Kato back to him, careful though to stay off of his stomach. He was straddling Kato's legs now. “I just wanted to see where my children will grow,” the man insisted, moving Kato's shirt out of the way.Kato held his breath and gasped when he felt the larger man's hand press lightly against his stomach. Kato looked down. The man's hand was enormous compared to Kato's slender waist and narrow hips. Shinko didn't use any pressure now, just held his hand there. Kato found himself relaxing, just a little. His breathing slowed, his heart no longer trying to escape its cage. Kato watched the strange expression on that handsome face.“You're so small and delicate,” the man breathed as if in awe. What did he say? That couldn't be right. He looked into Kato's eyes and saw something he didn't seem to like. He moved his hand and carefully climbed off Kato. “I'm sorry I scared you,” the man said sounding sincere.Watching him cautiously, Kato leaned back on his elbows. He inched backwards until he was sitting, butting up against the low table. He looked around. No guards were coming to his rescue. He looked through the fabric but could only make out shapes.“What's with you?” Kato was frowning. The man was acting weird ever since they sat on the dock. It made Kato feel off balance.
____________________________________________________________________ Noberu could feel his face tightening when the heavy curtain started to close, obscuring his view. He tried standing perfectly still. He tried counting to ten and then to twenty. But he couldn't stand the way the man kept leaning in and stealing kisses, grabbing Kato, and the curtain was the last straw. It was time for the kid to return for his injection and check up. He let him stay more than long enough. He signaled his guard and then alone moved to the opening of the curtain. He stood in the opening, allowing his eyes to adjust for a moment. Kato was laying on his back while Shinko rested one leg between the kid's thighs. The kid's shirt was wide open, tucked underneath him. Shinko's hand was nestled in Kato's pants, moving slowly, his other hand was wrapped around the back of Kato's neck. The taller man was kissing the kid delicately along his neck. He moved down to one of Kato's pink nipples. Using his tongue, he helped pebble the tip and bent forward and bit down gently. The kid's swollen red lips parted and he moaned, his eyes closed. One thin hand was tightly grasping the blankets beneath them, the other hidden between their bodies.Noberu flashed on an image of Kato's heated face, churning water and the kid's small hand pumping his swollen member. He remembered him panting. He remembered the kid's dark hair, curled and plastered to his moist face. He remembered the kid crying out Shinko's name when he came. He really didn't like remembering that. What he remembered the most was Kato's reaction when the kid caught him watching him masturbate. His reaction this time would be worse. They had a much bigger audience. Kato was too easy to embarrass. This would be too much for him.Noberu watched for a few more moments. He felt himself harden. He also remembered what it felt like with Kato's small bottom brushing his erection through his pants. He couldn't continue watching this without embarrassing himself too. He needed to get them to stop now. Shinko wouldn't be upset or embarrassed, just disappointed. He'd probably leak it to the public as soon as he was back at the palace. Kato would be mortified and shockingly enough, he didn't want to upset Kato. Well, not with something like this.Noberu hated that man touching the kid. He imagined hurting the pervert. He realized something that took his breath away – he was jealous because Kato returned Shinko's affection. He knew the kid found Shinko attractive from the moment Shinko made a pass at Kato during their first meal together. At the time, he just found it annoying. Now?Kato pretended to be annoyed and upset at the man's advances, but secretly the kid was flattered. It pissed Noberu off. A lot.For the first time in his life, Noberu questioned whether he could do this job well. He was compromised. He wanted to find a reason to barge into that damn frilly tent to drag Kato out. He wanted to hurt Shinko a lot. A small nasty part of him wanted Seshimora to demand formal challenge. And this was his undoing. He shouldn't have come. He wasn't fine. Fucking hell, Rato was right. He stood, frozen and indecisive. His guard made his decision for him as he heard, “Sir, the transport has been notified. They'll be here in a few minutes.”Noberu jerked his eyes to his guard. And motioned to the man. He started to move away from the opening. Noberu turned and stared at the kid helplessly. The kid jumped and his eyes shot open. His mouth opened to the perfect shape of an O. His face turned bright red. The kid covered his face with shaking hands. “Please leave,” he said breathlessly. Shinko's hand was still moving, a little faster now, obviously trying to finish Kato quickly. Pervert. “Stop it,” Kato whispered into his trembling hands and inched away from Shinko. Both Shinko's guard and his men knew better than to enter. They stayed back. Only Noberu was fool enough to remain. They both already knew he was there. He didn't mean to embarrass Kato again. He looked at Kato's trembling hands miserably. He could have waited a few more minutes. The damage was already done. The kid would blame him for this embarrassment. Noberu stood his ground and waited until Shinko sighed and withdrew his hand. Noberu had to work to keep his face neutral. He waited even longer for Shinko to move away from kid's body. Kato kept his hands covering his face. The trembling didn't lessen. “Why aren't you leaving?” his words were muffled by his hands. The kid was still panting. Noberu tried to ignore the kid's engorged member. Noberu didn't feel bad the kid didn't get his release this time. “I have allowed you to remain longer than I should have. We need to leave now in order to be on time for your injection, Prince Kato,” Noberu said struggling to keep his voice neutral as well. And I don't want that smug bastard touching you anymore, he thought angrily. He could see Kato's bright eyes and flushed face through his fingers now. The kid nodded, rolled to his side, away from Shinko and adjusted himself. He got to his feet too quickly. He stumbled and Noberu moved quickly to head Shinko off. He grabbed the kid's forearms and drew him to his chest. The kid shook him off and and said tightly, “I've got it.” Noberu let go and led the way out of the canopy. “Prince Kato,” Shinko said from behind them. The kid stopped but didn't turn around. “We'll finish this later,” Shinko's voice was husky, his words low. The kid's body stiffened. He started moving again but didn't look back. The kid was walking quickly. Too quickly to be safe. He was obviously pissed. The kid glanced over at Noberu. Noberu slowed his pace once he reached Kato. “Why?” he heard the kid murmur, just loud enough for Noberu's ears only.“What?”“Why do you always have to embarrass me?” the kid choked out. His entire frame was shaking. “You do a pretty good job of that, Squirt,” he didn't mean to sound this annoyed and grimaced. Crap, what the hell was wrong with him? He knew how easily the kid got embarrassed. He realized the other reason Kato was so upset. “No one else saw.” The kid glanced at him quickly, keeping pace. The kid was nibbling on his lips again. “I didn't intend that.”The kid stopped walking. He turned to Noberu, disbelief on his face. His left eye twitched. “Yes you did,” he hissed. “You fucking meant to do that,” he grunted out poking Noberu in the gut, hard.Noberu grimaced but not in pain. How the hell was he supposed to tell him he meant to, but changed his mind and then it was too late?“You're half naked,” Noberu hissed into Kato's face and saw the kid jerk. He heard the kid curse. His hands were still trembling and he only managed to fasten two buttons before Noberu lost his patience. Instead of helping, he gripped Kato's elbow. Hearing Kato's gasp, he turned and dragged Kato with him to the transport. Several of his men were boarding. They would send another transport to pick up the servers and equipment.Kato hissed at him several times to slow down. He ignored the kid until they reached the transport and Noberu jerked the kid to him. He leaned in and said in a quiet, tight voice, “This is neither the place nor the time to have this conversation.” He stared at Kato until he saw the kid's lips tighten and his head nod once sharply. He helped him into the transport and slammed the door. He went to the other side and stood there looking back at the canopy. He watched Shinko. The wind had picked up considerably. The tall man looked wild, his dark hair whipping around him. He was lean and sinewy. He stood comfortably, returning Noberu's look. He couldn't help but think there was more to Shinko than he saw. He couldn't get past the playboy. And he was blinded by jealously. He climbed into the transport. He waited ten minutes before reminding Kato he needed to do something about his shirt. Kato let out one continuous angry scream. He buttoned his shirt in silence. Noberu didn't even bother to look at the kid. As soon as the kid was healed, he was fucking spanking him.It was a quiet and an uncomfortable ride for everyone. It also seemed to take forever. The kid mumbled periodically about stupid cavemen and assholes. Noberu tried not to sigh. When they arrived, Kato refused to speak to anyone. He walked stiffly past Noberu, ignoring the man. Kato's face turned splotchy when Redaku met them at his rooms. The kid made a weird grunting sound and stormed off away from Noberu. Noberu made a few signals with his hands. Two guards left, shadowing the kid.Redaku turned to him. “Where are his shoes? Why is he so upset? What happened?”Noberu sighed, rubbing his eyes. His shoes? He answered the man's last question. “Exactly as you expected.”“I told you Kato liked Prince Shinko. You left them alone didn't you?” The man watched him intently, worry creeping into his voice. “I promised him time alone with Kato.”“You're a damn fool,” Noberu said tiredly.“He'll treat Kato well,” the man murmured, as if talking to himself. He met Noberu's eyes, as if to tell him more, “He's not foolish enough to make a formal challenge.”Noberu just stared, feeling himself growing cold. The man couldn't be foolish enough to get involved, but... He heard the man murmur something and hurry off after Kato. Noberu couldn't shake the cold feeling he had.He thought about the neurological toxin used on Seshimora and how their investigation was stalled only after a few days. He had no doubt, Ascension was the cause of the attempt and the cover up. After listening to Shinko's interest in life found in all waters and his seeing his intense interest in Kato, he knew. Shinko's easy nature and gregarious behavior were legendary. His interests were not well-known – for good reason. The man was smarter than Noberu gave him credit for.Noberu looked down the hallway the older man used to follow Kato. He could make out the man's dark outline fading. The damn fool was playing a dangerous game. His job was to keep Kato safe. He didn't have time for a dumb ass old fart who...only wanted to protect someone he loved. Noberu followed the old man cursing himself, a stupid adviser but most of all – his heart.

Shinko was staring at Kato's stomach again. Kato waived his hand around his stomach. Shinko blinked up at him. What the hell?
The man went back to staring at Kato's stomach when he murmured, “I'm sorry, Prince Kato. I didn't hear what you said.” Kato was already beginning to blush, but he plowed ahead anyway, trying to say what he meant this time. “You've wanted to get into my pants since I met you. Now you're acting all weird since...,” he broke off thinking about it more and finished, “My surgery. I just want to understand.” Kato pulled his shirt close. He felt like a freak. He didn't any more reminders.Shinko stared, his face washed of all expression. He got up onto his knees and moved towards Kato. Kato pushed himself up against the table until it dug into his back. He stopped moving when Shinko was close enough, he could feel his breath against his cheek.“You're amazing, Kato.” He rested his hands against Kato's stomach, “Life will grow here.” He brought his eyes up and Kato's breath hitched. The man's eyes darkened. “I want you,” the man breathed against his neck now. Shinko took Kato's face into his hands and said in the husky voice, “I'll never want anyone more than I want you.” Kato felt embarrassment lighting his cheeks again. He remembered those eyes. He remembered what they did together when he saw those eyes.Kato stared helplessly and let the man wrap his hand around the back of his head again. He felt himself dragged towards the man again until all he could smell was Shinko's clean scent. His legs were nudged apart. Shinko buried his face into the crook of Kato's neck. He dragged his wet tongue from along Kato's neck, raising goose bumps among other things. He kept his eyes open until he felt Shinko's warm lips touch his own and then he was lost in the taste of Shinko, the smell of the man and the man's wandering wonderful hands.Author's Notes: This is the Prince For Peace.
