When I told the others what I had done, they were furious with me.
"You shouldn't have gone alone."
"He could have killed you!"
"What would we have done if you didn't come back?"
"How do we know he didn't do anything to you?"
"You trusted the word of a demon?"
Then when they finally shut up I told them what I had found out. That part of him was still there. That there was a flicker of Vince's soul left in his eyes that we could hold on to, pull on, and use to rip the demon from him.
"But what if we can't rip it from him…" Liz asked, bringing voice to the question we had all thought of, but didn't dare speak.
Then there was nothing left that we could do for him. Then Vince was trapped, forever. Until his body grew old, withered and died with age.
But with a demon's life force powering his blood, strengthening his bones, and sharpening his senses, that could be longer than any of us would ever live to see. It could be well over 200 years or more. Then what would happen? Would he just be left free? To roam the world as he pleased? Who would he kill and why? What would he do, and for what cause? To whom would his loyalties lie, if not anyone but himself?
Was it worth trying anymore? Would we even manage to accomplish anything but anger him more? I couldn't help but wonder… what would happen to my friends? His friends? They all felt the change in him as well, but no one but we three, Caleb, Liz and I, understood the full scope of it. No one but I and his best friend understood why.
Was it wrong to keep Mike out of the loop? Would he even believe us if we told him? Would he be safer if we didn't… would he be safer if we did...
